Best white trim color for low light
Hello! I always have a difficult time choosing paint colors in my home. It is south facing without a ton of windows and its a struggle to get a warm feeling to it. Our home was built in the early 2000s and it’s oak everywhere. I would love to paint the trim white, paint walls, restain doors darker and refinish floors/replace carpeting (and update my kitchen but thats another post).
I had been thinking BM Simply White for the trim, but in reading reviews I’m hearing it can look greenish- with the low light things tend to look green, esp in the back of the house where it is north facing. I want something versatile but warm if that makes sense. The first is a pic I found with colors I like (they list the trim as BM Navajo white, but I’ve read that’s not terribly versatile). Second is a pic of our current foyer (south facing, and it’s a sunny day). help!

Comments (6)The correct white would be what works with your furnishings. If you have very earthy finished a stark white will look wrong. There’s blue white, true white, off-white, cream. All can read ’white’ but depends on everything else in the room. Do you have photos you can share? What is your flooring? Whats your kitchen look like? Do you have white cabinets? Stained? bm cloud white is an off white that you could use for trim and door if you had to pick something And we’re trying to play safe. Most people can’t pull off white walls though. Comments (17)You are right about the North facing rooms being difficult to make look brighter. Usually White Paint in a North room doesn't work. White paint needs light in order to make it look white! That's prob why you have difficulty. plus, it's usually a cooler, bluer light from the north. AS you can see, your winter white is a gray/green undertone. not the best color to have in a bathroom! Definitely not a warm white! Vanilla Milkskake is a warmer white. leans on the yellow/green spectrum though I tried White Dove in my room (west/south) and couldn't stand it. too dingy looking. I painted over it w/Simply White. White Opulance is a nice white. but it's a red undertone, not a warm yellow. (has a very slight pink hue. 4 years agoHi Kate, I went thru the same dilemma about 2 years ago. My foyer is also south facing with limited natural light. I ended up going with BM Simply White and love the color. So much so that I've started painted all the 80's oak in my house with it. The wall color is SW Silver Strand. Overall, the space is SIGNIFICANTLY brighter and more welcoming. I don't think you'll be disappointed with Simply White.
