Kitchen ideas layout
I have a small kitchen with a peninsula. the door next to the refrigerator is our utility room so not much I can change there. I would like it to feel more open, without losing any cabinet space. The refrigerator kind of sticks out like a sore thumb to me. I would like to make this a white kitchen and cabinets to the ceiling for more storage? Also ideas if I should keep peninsula or not. the kitchen opens to my small dining and living area, therefore I can't sacrifice any space there. I also have LOADS of fiesta ware I would like to display. Don't worry about offending me, the only thing I like in this kitchen is the floors. Thanks in advance!

Comments (5)If you really want help here post a to scale plan nothing in the space except where the windows and doorways are . Where the doorways lead and all meaurements clearly marked and also the sizes of your appliances since I never design a kitchen until the client has chosen appliances and better yet those appliances are already in the garage waiting. IMo lower tha dividinwall to 36" and put in a nice set of drwer cabinets there but I nned the whole plan to scale and the easy way is to use graph paper....See MoreNeed kitchen addition layout help/fresh ideas
Comments (23)I thought the last two plans have the back door in the kitchen. Anyway, here are all the proposed plans with traffic patterns, prep paths, and clean-up zones. The first plan posted (whether the peninsula moves forward or not) is the only one with an efficient prep flow and no traffic through any work zones. Traffic to the fridge wasn't included because most of the plans have a beverage fridge on the bar run. I doubt the peninsula will be used for prep since it has no prep sink, but I added a sink and the green lines to denote that layout. I also added them in the second plan, as another poster suggested, but because the island is a barrier, IMO the prep sink doesn't add to function--and would put the prep zone in the basement traffic path. Even without direct access to the back yard, the first plan would be my choice. BTW, if the peninsula is only 3' deep, the seating overhang will be only about 10" since you'll need to account for a front overhang and a back cover panel. The NKBA recommends a minimum 15" overhang for seating at counter height, so an extra 6" depth would be more comfortable and would take up some of the dreaded dead space....See MoreKitchen layout ideas. Comments (3)Because you didn't specifically say so, I have to ask if you are contemplating a complete gut remodel. I don't know how you can make a change like you describe without doing so. The oven stack of cabinets doesn't look like it lends itself to being repurposed and the cabinets look pretty old. If so, we certainly need a complete floorplan as Jan says. You should also be looking at the pictures of kitchens in Houzz. There are literally millions of them. Those will show you what other people have done. A range instead of cooktop and ovens certainly looks like a good idea in your situation, but without being able to see the whole kitchen no one can know if there is possibly an even better solution....See MoreCould really use some ideas for kitchen layout in converted shop
Comments (24)@wdccruise I dont get it? are you trying to be difficult or just having a hard time with reading comprehension? 1. the building is rectangular, hence why i made it rectangular. sorry it's not an exact model for you? You can also complain its not exact to scale or i bet my measurements don't add up to the actual interior wall length and my positions are probably off by a few inches. sorry. its just a quick mock up. i didn't see the need to try to model in stairs that are clearly indicated immediately via words and the floor plan. 2. "it says there's a loft (up the obvious stairs) for a bed" correct, that tells you where the bed would go, why you would start talking about having a bed on the main floor is beyond me. My OP says studio/onebedroom so why there'd need to be an extra bed downstairs is a weird thing for you to bring to the discussion. also in my OP it DOES "tell you how i would finishthisroom" ( tv/living area would be against the right wall and obviously the kitchen which is why we're here... theres not much room for anything else. 3. if you know how to read a plan, you can see where the 240v outlet is. if you REALLY care about where the 120v are and want to get that deep into the discussion, you can clearly see in the second to last photo that there's outlets and where they are.. sorry i didn't put them on the quick plan sketch? the plumbing would be indicated by the sink, which as you were aware by the time you posted, was non movable. there is no ducting and none indicated nor any needed...See More

4 years agoHere are three examples of what I mean with islands perpendicular to the cabinets. Especially with a small area, this might work well. I don't know how the kitchen joins up to the family room exactly, but I do think that the half wall definitely needs to go to create flow around the island (and perhaps you might need to cut back the full wall a bit too). An island would give you more counter/prep area, more storage, and more seating ... but regardless if you can make an island work or not, definitely flip flop the pantry and refrigerator as a start. Notice that one picture I posted didn't have the depth in her room to have an overhang for seating (that usually takes up an additional foot of space), so she put two stools on the end. Clever ... she still got some seating while keeping the island as slim as possible. You can also make your island any depth you want by using 24" cabinets, 12" cabinets, or open shelving underneath.
You'll have to post some "after" pictures. :)

I disagree. If standard-depth, the fridge is still going to stick out, and be in the traffic path from the utility room. At least now you have open space in front of the fridge, and traffic can go around if the fridge door is open.
OTOH, if you have space to move the range to the right, you could use a CD fridge, then you'd have landing space and space in front of the utility room door. I made the cabinets to the left of the utility room door full height, because that was easier with my paint program, but it could easily be base and uppers--maybe with a MW for a snack area, then get rid of the OTR MW. 4 years agolast modified: 4 years ago13'x9' is sufficient for all kitchen functions, but not enough to add a significant amount of display space. If you want it more open and you can adjust the pony wall, you could move the sink and DW down. That would give you more prep space to the left of the sink, and would allow you to move the range down far enough to accommodate the fridge.
Your current DW location is kind of awkward, but overall, I think you have a very nice, very functional kitchen.
