corner fireplace in large living room. How to furnish?
Comments (4)That sounds just like our family room in size, shape, and corner fireplace (which was a real challenge for me to figure out and in the end I needed a decorator to do it.) Here's how our designer arranged it (and by the way, he said to have a huge area rug positioned just as you have yours): Going around the room, starting with the long wall directly to the left of the fireplace wall: Wall to left of fireplace: A pair of wingback chairs and ottomans with a round tea table between chairs. These are angled toward each other of course but they back to the wall. So, pretty much, they are ignoring the fireplace. Corner fireplace. Wall to right of fireplace: TV cabinet (or, your piano). This wall has an exit to the foyer, so the next grouping of furniture begins several feet inward from it. Long wall to right of TV cabinet wall and opening to foyer: Sofa, flanked by a large trunk on the left side and an end table on the right side, and of course a coffee table. On the left end of the sofa, at a right angle to the sofa, a small occasional chair. So sofa and occasional chair "share" the trunk as an end table. Wall to right of that (which is basically mostly opening into the kitchen but has some small wall area: Another wingback chair at a right angle to the sofa. So sofa and wingback share the end table. Right now all the furniture is either being made or recovered or in the garage, as floors were just redone and we're painting etc., but prior to that I had it arranged this way with existing/old furniture, and it really looked good. I thought I wouldn't like ignoring the fireplace by not having furniture directly centered on it, but really it does not feel like it's being ignored. Have to find the area rug now but need to cool it on the money expenditures for a bit. Hope this helps!...See MoreHow to furnish this small loft space for a bedroom?

Comments (20)Hi! Thanks for all the advice. I went to help her set things up and to look at it in order to decide how to provide privacy. I decided to get ceiling tracks (found some at BBB for $9.99 on sale from $39!). I got 4 tracks of 48" each to cover the 12' span. I'm going to attach to the ceiling and I made 4 blackout curtain panels (bought ready-made panels from Target and added blackout fabric to them) to hang on the tracks. The opening at the staircase will not be covered so light will come in there, but for privacy that will be okay. She'll decide later if she wants something added there. So here's is my final question: The ceiling is 9' tall and the half-wall is 4'. So that leaves a 5' space to fill with the curtains. I am all done making them except to hem to the final length. Should I have them extend beyond the top of the half-wall, so maybe hem them to 65" or so? I was thinking that if the curtains are a little bit longer than the opening, they would stay closed better if there are slight breezes from AC or the nearby ceiling fan. Would about 5" extra inches be sufficient, or should it be more, like 10 or 12"? So far: Ikea bed with drawers, over-bed storage rack form BBB, a soft-sided Ikea wardrobe, Ikea shelf with plastic bins (instead of a wooden dresser), shelf from BBB. Adding soon, a small laptop desk and a swivel chair from Ikea with will fit at te foot of the bed where there are about 4' left. We realize nothing matches but we were going for function and had to choose from what was available....See MoreLiving room with no wall space - need help furnishing
Comments (19)Thanks! I'm hoping it will be a cute space!! That doorway opposite the doorway is a little redundant, but it leads into the entryway/front door, so I'm not sure how it would feel walking into the back of a sofa. But maybe I am wrong! The condo is a converted 2-bedroom, where they turned the dining room into a living room, and the living room into a 2nd bedroom, which explains why the space is so awkward! What would anyone think about doing a sofa along the window/in front of radiator, and putting a chair or pouf under the TV (between built-in and bottom doorway)? Or a sofa along the right-side wall (where I have the random door/beach photo leaning) with a comfy accent chair top left next to window? Would something like this work at all or am I crazy?...See MoreCDR Design, LLC
