Small GH question. I mean really small GH
Comments (8)ok, so i figured id go ahead and give anot so brief review of this thing got it fast. real fast. like 4 days, so that was pretty awesome. started putting it together in the garage on a friday(cant do that with a big one-HA!) and immediately considered returning it. the instructions didnt have any text. all pictures and numbers. huge PITA to get it going, but i perservered with the help of a few rfosty beverages. saturday, reinvigorated by decent weather, i move the semi assembled pieces to their final location. south side of the garage. 45 minutes later, i seriously considered picking it up over my head and throwing it across the yard. few beverages later(in case you havent noticed i measure everything in beer hours) its assembled and in place and still in one piece. im somewhat pleased with it. fast forward several days, im not so pleased. not because of it, but because of its location. crap for sun there. looking at alternate locations. im guessing i need at least 4-6 hours of sun? filtered sun ok? petunias are growing there now, so i presume thats enough sun... in summary im not displeased with this thing, but i wouldnt get another. in the end, for the same amount of money i could have a 6x8 HFGH, but as mentioned earlier, no realistic place to put it. it does have pretty good room considering, for new plants waiting to be planted, and maybe some cool season container crops like carrots, lettuce, etc. a little vent on top, sliding door. its not made for a 6ft tall 185lb man though. i do feel pretty buff when steeping into it, so maybe as an esteem booster i can recoup some of the cost. also, once again im convinced that the only thing China ever designed and built worth a crap was a big wall. the opinions of this poster do not reflect the opinions of anyone else. on earth. no matter what their affiliation. pics out later. thanks again guys for the advice, and info....See MoreSuggestions needed for small peninsula in small kitchen
Comments (5)Thanks for the feedback. I need to read the FAQ challenge to figure out how to post a photo. I am not hoping to match the corian, just coordinate with it. I imagine that the virginia mist would be darker than the grey of the corian. I could also go with one of the more solid looking blacks and have it honed. I had also thought of soapstone because I was seriously considering it in our addition, but I think I would have to find a small charcoal (not green) slab with little movement. I am not sure whether this color corian is still available or not. I will have to look. Cork is not hot here (eastern Massachusetts). I mainly see tile floors. I would put more hardwood in to match what surrounds the kitchen, but my real estate agent (who is also a decorator) thought it would be tough to find new hardwood that didn't make the rest of the wood look like it needed to be refinished. (We refinished the whole house several years ago and I do not want to go through that again just to match a kitchen floor.) Besides liking the idea of cork (renewable, insulating, cushioning, etc.) I thought I could put it next to the hardwood to continue the color and hopefully make the space seem bigger!! Should I be safe and put in tile? I can't do a freestanding piece because under the current counter is a cabinet. Also, I am not sure that tile would be the best option because my kids are already wanting to do their homework on the "new" peninsula that doesn't yet exist! It seems like it would be hard to write on tile. Keep the ideas coming and I will try to post a photo later. Thanks!...See MoreSmall kitchen/question about counter material
Comments (51)Wow, what a surprise to see this thread at the top of the page. Very bittersweet, because my last post mentions my husband's plans for the tops. He unexpectedly passed away just a couple of months later--how I wish he was still here. My brother graciously volunteered to help me with the tops. He cut them after I templated, then I finished the sanding, buffing, installation, runnels and seams. Coincidentally, I just finished cleaning the tops in anticipation of a family celebration planned for this Sunday. I polish with a cloth saturated with mineral oil, then buff off the excess. Makes them shine like new! They are holding up well--I don't notice any damage or wear, and I sometimes put (semi-)hot pots down beside the stove, although I wouldn't put a large, really hot baking dish from the oven. One casualty though--my DD dropped the lid to a china tea pot. The lid shattered, but no damage to the counter. I'm linking my kitchen album, starting with the pics of the counter top, and also the album that has info on the runnels. If you click on my user-name you can find all my albums, as well as my kitchen threads. houstoncrafter, best of luck!! I haven't been on GW much lately, as I've had some other projects to do, but feel free to email me if you need some hand-holding. :) Kitchen/lab top pics DIY Runnels...See MoreSmall Kitchen Redesign -- quick question
Comments (8)We need a layout to really help. But counter space is much more useful than double ovens. Wall ovens, especially double ones, only add something to a kitchen if there's room for them. This kitchen doesn't seem like it benefits from having them. Get a free-standing range, gain more counter space, and it will be great....See MoreSabrina Alfin Interiors
