Help with Oak in an Open Floor Plan

Hi all!

We are currently looking to replace the flooring in our open concept living space. It ranges from the entry to the garage, kitchen, dining area, entry space, and living room. It is a VERY large area that I've tried to break up with some strategically placed furniture and rugs. My style is more mid-century modern/industrial, whereas my husband tends to like more modern or traditional styles, so it's been interesting trying to blend the two!

I am having a hard time deciding on what to go with for flooring for a number of reasons:

  1. I HATE the honey oak cabinets but my husband loves them and they are not going anywhere or getting painted anytime soon. Same with the wood trim that is everywhere (base, crown molding, door and window frames, etc.)
  2. The cabinets are actually two toned - the cabinets surrounding the refrigerator and the sink are a darker reddish color.
  3. The countertop is pretty bold and isn't going to be replaced.
  4. I think a backsplash would make it too busy, and with the somewhat awkward cut off of the counter next to the patio door, it would be difficult to cut off the backsplash anyways.

I have three ideas that I'm currently complating, but I'm totally open to votes/suggestions/whatever! Currently I'm thinking of:

  1. Trying to match the majority of the cabinets so it looks similar to what is there now.
  2. Finding flooring that has multiple shades to tie into both colors of the cabinets.
  3. Going with something completely different such as white.

I would appreciate any ideas/insight you might have to offer! Some of the photos included below have before/after photos of what we've done so far. Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks in advance!

Sammi
