Does anybody have information on what stage this initiative is in?

Henderson, Casadevall and Michael Joyner, MD, a physiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., quickly joined forces and leveraged the resources at their three institutions to test the approach. Their efforts resulted in an investigational new drug application to the Food and Drug Administration that was filed March 18. If the application is approved, they plan to move rapidly to a clinical trial.

Kathy,

thank you for the link. I hope NY moves fast on this since outside of slowing the spread of infection this is probably our best chance short term. What is encouraging is that it can help front line medical workers as well.

This was done with Ebola. This did work for that. It was used to treat people who contracted Ebola on a very small scale, if I remember 5 or 6 people. I don't really remember the exact details, but it did work. But this maybe can't be done on a large scale. Should be done to protect our health care workers who are vital.

This is similar to what some areas did for poisonous snake bite victims. My grandfather living on the river had been bitten many times and had built up some immunity. His blood was used several times.

It's heartening that there is at least the idea that some solutions are being sought, not only for a cure but to lessen the symptoms and severity of the disease. It gives us all hope.

Bon Jovi band member tests positive. Tested positive in a drive by test in New Jersey. Is being treated with anti-malaria drugs prescribed by his doctors.

Looks like we have some good news:

FDA is facilitating access to COVID-19 convalescent plasma for use in patients with serious or immediately life-threatening COVID-19 infections

This does not include the use of COVID-19 convalescent plasma for the prevention of infection.

Florida has ordered 2,000 doses of the anti-malaria drug. Supposedly some have seen improvement after using it. It's made in Israel.

All good news is welcome. However it takes time to roll out millions of doses.

We all hope these drugs can help. If people knew that there was an effective treatment that would reduce the level of fear and help get things back to semi-normal.

"One of the French study authors, Didier Raoult, a prominent
researcher who heads IHU, released a statement on Monday in response to
the criticisms. He said he would treat any COVID-19 patient with a
combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin immediately after
diagnosis. (“Like any doctor, once a treatment has been shown to be
effective, I find it immoral not to administer it. It’s as simple as
that,” ..

A clearer verdict may come from the WHO megatrial and two other major
trials of hydroxychloroquine in different doses that have started at
Columbia University and the University of Minnesota. New York Governor
Andrew Cuomo announced that the state also will fast-track a trial of
hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin."

But the question remains, is it effective? We don't know that and won't without properly done clinical trials.

Yes and what I found worrisome is that the French researcher Didier Raoult looks like Trump's Doctor and some of Raoult's peers accuse him of promoting fake news.

More about National COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma Project:

"We have 1,200 donors who are listed on our website," (https://ccpp19.org/index.html) Paneth says. "We're sending them information about the places they can go to."

My grand-nephew is recovering from Covid-19 and his doctor suggested he donate blood for this project. I guess because he's otherwise a healthy 20 something young man.
