Is it true that orange-ish roses are less favored? If yes, why?

I recently read a few remarks, here and there, that seemed to indicate a significant number of people dislike orange roses. I wonder why. Some of those that have a sunset appearance - like Rosie the Riveter or Easy Does It - look absolutely stunning to me.

I know some people are not crazy about reds because they may come across too stereotypical or just plain Knock Out (LOL). But orange roses seem so unique, earthy and artistic.

So those of you who don't exactly favor oranges, would you care to share reasons behind your ...avoidance? :)

I used to not care for the color orange (or even dark yellows) in my garden at all. Then I fell in love with the DA rose 'Carding Mill' on a visit to the Portland Rose Garden. That rose is more of an apricot, but it got me interested in the sunset colored roses, and from there an obsession was born.

Even though I have now embraced orange in roses, I do sequester them together in their own flower border. I find that oranges and orange-y reds do clash with other colors. Plus, I love the vibrant look of all the warm colors mixed together. I call this border my Sunset Border. It has apricot, orange, yellow, and blended colors all mixed together with perennials (bearded iris, lupins, primroses) and annuals (nasturtiums, calendula, snapdragons, pansies) and a few shrubs (azaleas, camellias).

A long view of the Sunset Border. This was last summer, it's first season, so everything is still quite small. I didn't plan this, but the setting sun actually does fall on this border and it looks very beautiful in the late afternoon and evening!

I'm very excited because just purchased 'Westerland' from High Country Roses, and it's going to be planted somewhere in this border where it can take pride of place. I've never actually seen it in person, and I'm soooo looking forward to it!! I think I may start a separate post about it.

Erasmus, gorgeous pic of Alchymist. Like Marianne, it is a once bloomer, right?

I also love Alfred Sisley. I got it last fall from PalatineRose, planted it in 5 gallon pot, and it already blooms its head off. Will share its pics soon. Helen

Sally, You will love Maggie. She blooms alot and is fairly healthy for my conditions. Her blooms are large and magenta in color. Remember the crayola crayon, magenta? Just like that. Lots of petals that can be quartered and oh my goodness, the SCENT, fabulous. I think you are doing the right thing in getting Austins for your orange additions. All things considered, my Graham Thomas, Abraham Darby and Heritage do quite well here. All are in large pots, on the wrong rootstock and get too much shade. Under better conditions, I think they could really do great. FYI, Dr Manners has said somewhere that they have their Austins in Lakeland on multi-flora (as are mine). He says that, on fortuniana, they become huge monsters with fewer blooms on the very tops of the canes. However, I am still interested in trying one or two. Perhaps they would be better bloomers if pegged down. Did you know that Cool Roses in S Florida is licensed to graft Austins onto fort? They are hard to reach. Perhaps you will have luck though. I'm all over the map. I actually a weenie who enjoys reading up on food production methods, chemicals, etc. Natural resource managment is my field, and I teach a lot about various methods of growing things. Also thru that process I have developed local connections with people who farm. There's a whole controversy about the USDA label "organic" which many small growers feel is way to restrictive, and also way to bureaucratic and skewed in favor of large, commercial producers. I'm much more concerned about knowing where my food comes from, where the farms are and who the producers are than some type of label. I buy local or regional produce when I can. Most stuff I cannot afford to buy organic OR conventional out of season. For fruit, other than in-season, I mostly only eat apples and bananas which is all I can afford. I eat those conventional, and always peel apples. I can't afford many of the high pesticide veggies anyway. I buy organic celery, my one concession. I buy conventional potatoes and always peel. I can no longer eat green peppers so occasionally splurge on a conventional red pepper, which I can barely afford anyway so I don't buy organic. I'm lucky to have a great U-Pick place up the road for peaches, cherries, strawberries and some other fruits. I buy tomatoes in bulk from a produce farm and can for winter use. Also still lots of great farms in the area so local stores often carry regional produce. Meat is mostly a non issue for me. I eat so little of it. I can't really afford most fish, I buy it rarely but then follow the Monterey Bay Aquarium's recommendations. Excellent Web site they have on the subject. Don't get me started on what's happening to the oceans, it is such a tragedy. I've started buying the canned tuna and canned salmon in the health food store that is sustainably harvested. Since I use both the salmon and tuna as more of a condiment, even though they are twice the price of conventional, it isn't cost prohibitive for those small cans. I buy canned Pacific salmon for salmon patties. I eat freshwater fish from Michigan when I go every year. They have lots of contaminants, but I don't eat the fish that often. People say, "Aren't you worried about eating Lake Michigan fish?" and I say, "Well, that's why I have devoted my life to conservation!! As goes my Lake, so go I." If I was a meat eater, I would try to develop relationships with local producers. I know a farmer who produces local organic meat if I was so inclinded. There are lots of cooperatives here where you can get organics, if you can afford it. Cheese, milk, eggs, produce, the whole nine yards. There are even businesses that will deliver it to you straight from a Lancaster cooperative. I can't afford most cheese anyway, only eat a few kinds and can't afford organic. But I limit my consumption. I buy organic milk. Meat is actually an area I would seriously want to buy organic, considering most toxins concentrate in the fats of milk, cheese, meat. But since I eat those things so rarely, that's my compromise. Also from what I have tasted, organic free range poultry is superior. I don't like the other meats anyway so I can't really judge. For me, the most important thing in my food purchases is to support my LOCAL agriculture, and also local businesses. Even the local greengrocer, which has great prices, is a fun place to go. Most of the stuff comes from Mexico, but most of the shoppers are from there too! They carry stuff imported from the Middle East too. The store is filled with a whole variety of ethnicities. That's where I go for my out of season splurges. I enjoy educating myself about where my food comes from, and meeting and getting to know local producers and local business people. Sorry ashley missed your post.... Mom called DSS back in July when I refused to let SD talk to her mom after she had already been on the phone with her for 4 hours. When DSS came to our home they didn't find anything to really charge any of us with .... but they felt SD actions required some immediate intervention... so they came once in july once in aug and once in sept. to our home but they go weekly to mom's on either a wed or fri... to "meet with the children" because every monday and thurs mom would call and report us to DSS for something else .... she even took SD9 and SS10 to the police station to file a report against hubby because he let them go to their mothers instead of arguing with them ... she said he was just looking to get rid of them ... then she had them speak to the judge how "they were afraid to come home" So DSS thinks SD is in danger. The boys are in counseling mom met with their counselors last week ... I spoke with the counselor on tues (14th) and said ... well DSS had til friday (10th) to have services in place so I am guessing they are closing the case ... DSS called me an hour later to tell me they are keeping the case open and that the counselors filed against mom for emotional abuse of my SC. DSS told us in Sept they had big plans ... for us ... including family therapy, daily visits from a parenting aide, a whole list of "things" and none of it had been put in place by the 10th that was the end date of the 45 day assessment. Mom calls DSS one month before they have to go back to court this is the third time she has called but its the first time anything came of it .... When I spoke with DSS they said the parenting aide wasn't going to work because that was only an 8-week assessment and our case is going to take longer than 8 weeks .... If I hear one more person say for the sake of the children I am just going to explode!!!

Thank you Gillian. Oh my yes! You understand! lol My flower snob can certainly be difficult. Today he's been super busy at work, but the few times I've gotten to talk to him he's mentioned twice tearing out all of our KnockOuts and putting "real" or "better" roses there. :face palm: Ugh! First of all at least 7 of those KnockOuts are taller than I am. There's no way I can get them out by myself when I can barely prune them without them eating me alive. I told him he will just have to build another flower bed. Hmpf! Btw, he's a 6'3" former high school football player who turned down a college football full-ride scholarship to serve in the Navy as a nuc for almost 10 years. Our daughters and I uuuusually only call him a flower snob around each other so we don't embarrass him too much in front of his buddies. ;-)

Helen, I'm totally smitten. There's something about oranges with a touch of pink that melt my heart. It has similar coloring to Augusta Luise and some photos I've seen of Rosie the Riveter.

Yes, the mixed roses with pink/orange or lavender do it for me. It's a dreamy combo. BenT, I love that pic of Brigadoon. For those who like that rose, it's one of the few HTs that Peter Schneider recommends in 'Right Rose, Right Place', as being hardy to Z5 and a great cutter.. Of course, YMMV.

My favourite orange rose for many years is Voodoo. The intense colour is very hard to mix in with other roses as it is crispy clear. You can spot this rose miles away. I do not think that it is the colour itself that people do not like but rather the hues or shades of that colour. I find that as I get older I tend to like softer colours.

erasmus....I was just looking at 'The Alchymist' last night! Your photo is gorgeous. There is a Danish gardener named Claus Dalby who has one of these trained on his white house and it is so beautiful when it's in bloom. How long does yours stay in bloom? Is it a long bloom season?

joewyoming....that is a very sweet story about your husband and the orange rose. I am like you....I found growing roses very intimidating, until I joined these forums and learned the "secrets to success"! I also fell in love with orange roses for a sentimental reason: I went with my then four year old son to the Portland Rose Gardens and he was so sweet walking around with me and enjoying the flowers. I saw a row of 'Carding Mill' in full bloom and fell in love. I took this picture of my son, and I decided I had to have one!

I bought a potted 'Carding Mill' from a local nursery, but I was so scared to plant it that it sat in its pot for 4 years. That was why I finally decided to plant a dedicated rose garden, I wanted somewhere I could grow my beloved 'Carding Mill' and it would thrive (not wither away like all my other roses had done).

Well, I'm so pleased you like my picture!! Sadly, I no longer have Alchymist. I think it died from cold...one of those polar vortexes. It is supposed to be very hardy, too. It is a once bloomer but I think it bloomed a fairly long time. Blooms were large. Canes were fat and thorny. It was not easy to train it on an arbor as it was stiff. The Impressionist looks like it might be a good replacement for Alchymist for a rose that has a blend of warm colors. I wonder how vigorous it is.

Ginger Syllabub is pretty. Mine's not very old and is growing kind of slowly but it looks good, and is healthy. Not quite the blend of colors in The Impressionist. At least so far.

The Alchemist along with Gloire de Dijon were two I never felt I could successfully grow, but both have been favorites for as long as I've grown roses. The color variation on Alchemist is so complex, and I'm a sucker for quilled petals.

Erasmus, I have a vague recollection of you saying you no longer have that gorgeous rose. That's sad.

I read this thread with interest - lovely to see so many ideas! Here's a few more thoughts, FWIW:

I think whether you like orange roses or not probably boils down to whether you like orange in the first place. I remember (really, I do!) as a child one of the "important" decisions you had to make was what was your favorite color. As I recall, from among my little classmates, red came in a strong first, then blue, then a smattering of yellow. I don't recall anyone choosing orange. The "favorite color" question came up much more rarely the older I got, but occasionally it did, with the same results - almost never anyone who really loved orange. Ergo, it would stand to reason most people's preferred flower color choice wouldn't be orange, since so few love that color in the first place.

Also, I think it depends on how you define "orange." I think of orange as, well, the color of an orange, or the color of the picture on a Tropicana package (haven't grown this rose, so can't say what the flower actually looks like), or the color of Wyoming cannas or that of those true orange azaleas I don't know the name of. But apricot, and sherbert, and sunset, and creamy versions of the orange spectrum are colors I personally put into a whole different class. Orange I don't care for. But that other "class" - I love those!

And then there's the whole reality of just how quirky our psyches can be - like, why do I sincerely dislike neon colors in roses but absolutely adore those same colors in azaleas? Why am I so not a fan of white (in any flower), even though I like the color? You'd think there would be a quirky gene that would love orange, but so far, no.....

Think I'll get some orange roses anyway.

Rosylady - awwwww...how adorable!!! Isn't it wonderful that roses are fragrant...so that when these trusting young sweeties take a sniff...they get delighted!! Oh!!! And, man, that's a gorgeous shot you have!!

erasmus - that's lovely!!!

Verdancroft - yes, I never thought of it like that...I'm not crazy about white roses...but I love white daisies and white phlox. Good point!

I think a rose could be worth $50, if it is rare and hard to find, or especially well grown. I’m quite value oriented , I have fetched a rose of out the dumpster for $1 before, but if it’s something I really want I’m willing to pay. Besides, if we hesitate on a high price, we just have to think about Lilyfinch and Rainy Blue lol. ;-)

America - definitely orange. It is one of my husband's favorites so I always find a place for it. My favorite orange roses are usually blends. The sunset coloring some of these roses have is so beautiful!

Ben, you are so right. Rainy Blue and Lilyfinch, that’s funny 😂😂😂.

In case you haven't seen the post, Lilyfinch was jokingly posted she would trade one of her kidneys for Rainy Blue. That made me laugh so hard because in my head I immediately saw the scene where Lilyfinch went for a full check up and the doctor asked her why she only had one kidney and she said she already traded the other kidney for a rose called Rainy Blue 😂😂😂.

There're two roses that I don't mind pay $100 - $200 each: Juliet (DA wedding rose) and Miyabi (Japanese rose). Helen

I placed an order for The Impressionist on Amazon (delivered by HeirloomRoses) on Friday 4/3/20. Heirlooms shipped the rose on Monday 4/6, and I received the rose today Thu 4/9. The rose is nicely packed and in perfect condition. The roots are fully filled out the 1-gallon pot. The weather is warm so they removed the leaves to avoid blackspot while in transit. I don't mind whether the leaves are removed or not. Overall, I give it an A. I can't wait to see this rose blooms in my garden. Helen

Claire Rose is doing very well! It was a small but healthy bare-root, and now has several strong stems coming out. Too early for blooms, but those stems look strong enough to support a bud. Typhoo Tea is in bloom, Amazing Grace has a huge bud, Augusta Luise and Chandos beauty all growing strongly...all my collectibles are doing so well, I couldn’t be happier.

Kristine, I also have a small 'Amazing Grace' (actually two of them) which was planted last season. I'm really looking forward to seeing some blooms (hopefully) this year. Heirloom posted an amazing picture of a bouquet of them recently.

I have to confess I have an aversion to roses that look modern and have a strong orange color. However, fluffy roses that have softer colors of an orange blend such as Carding Mill or Aloha are another story. I think they're really luscious and rich-looking, and can also blend with many other colors such as white, yellow, gold and even various shades of pink. This is Aloha taken in my garden last spring.

Ingrid....your 'Aloha' blooms are gorgeous! How is the plant doing for you? I remember a while ago you said the shape of the bush wasn't so good, but it was still new. Has it gotten better?

I have three 'Aloha' in my garden and all of them are not ideal in shape. I'm not really sure how to prune them. At this point, I'm just letting them grow to see what happens.

Ingrid, that's beautiful. Which Aloha is yours? I should be able to tell, but I have been totally confused by all the Alohas, including Aloha Hawaii, and to make matters worse, for some crazy reason, I was including Laguna in the mixup. I have a new Aloha Hawaii own root band this year.

Does anyone in a colder zone grow Aloha Hawaii? It's rated to z6b, but Northland sells it, and that normally means it has grown in their garden successfully, unless they're just testing it.

I think she means the original E. Boerner Aloha that was used extensively by David Austin in his early breeding efforts. This rose is classified as a large flowered climber and (for me) would never make a natural looking bush shrub. It can naturally grow bolt upright so I'm finding it's best grown as a short climber training its canes while young and pliable. Currently its wrapping itself around a make-shift tuteur, but since planting in the ground last year, is reaching onward and upward. I'll need to make a new much taller obelisk.

While I feel intuitively that Ingrid is a delicate flower with hands to match, (I also recall them being very pretty and well-kept from a past picture), Aloha is a huge powderpuff of a rose and almost always in bloom. I'm adding a second this summer. Aloha Hawaii is on my 'someday soon' list. FreedomGardens also grows it so it should be hardy in your zone, flowers, but I'm not sure how much it will climb. :-))

P.S. A couple of the entries on HMF are duplicates using alternate names and the breeders' codes.

It was my mistake...Ingrid had described Aunt Margy as very small in bloom, while the pic with her hand is Boerner Aloha, which I also grow, and a HT sized bloom.

Vapor, thanks so much for your answers. I wasn't even aware that there was more than one Aloha. It is indeed an awkward, gawky shrub/climber, and my attempts at a bit of pruning didn't help matters. It's against a house wall and somewhat intertwined with Duchesse de Brabant, but even so I wouldn't have kept it if it weren't for those luscious, to die for blooms.

Ben, you're too funny! Aunt Margy's Rose and Aloha are pretty much at the opposite ends of the size spectrum, and the two blooms I'm holding were probably the largest on the bush. I'm hoping for equally large ones with the late rains we've had.
Here's Star of the Republic, another orange blend, which narrowly escaped being eaten entirely but has made a comeback with the rains. This picture is from last spring.

Ingird, I somehow missed that you grew SotR! I have that one too! We'll have to compare notes. So far it came through the winter with flying colours and has had perfect foliage. Let's hope it ups its repeat, although I can't fault it as it was only a wee baby last year.

Speaking of orange roses, does anyone grow (Above all climbing rose) I planted a band last year, hoping it takes off a bit this year. What growth it did put on survived winter unscathed.

Any photos or comments if you do grow this one as it has yet to bloom.

Vapor, I apologize, I believe the rose I named Star of the Republic is actually Sweet Frances. SotR vanished into some hungry tummies and I don't think I ever saw a single flower on it. I'd definitely love to see yours if it blooms this year. I lost so many roses that I would have loved, Coquette des Blanches, Mme. Joseph Schwartz, Cole's Settlement, Lavender Mist, Snowbird etc. Still, some good ones left that I also love.

I grew The Impressionist a long long time ago. 2006-ish. I read the description on HR website and saw the pictures and could not resist. It grew very well and bloomed very well and then in the third year it was there and then it was gone, just vanished. I dont know what I did??? It died so fast. The reviews on HR are exuberant. But then I read some old threads on GW and people were not positive about this rose so I kept passing. Today, after reading this thread, I ordered another The Impressionist. This is the one rose that my little girl remembers the most, and constantly reminds me to get again.....

It has a most unusual fragrance. can anyone tell me how this fragrance is described?

Is it true that orange-ish roses are less favored? If yes, why?
