PLEASE help!! How can I make my kitchen with oak look better??
Comments (24)Those are not oak cabinets. As I started reading this thread, I was starting to compose a reply -- "Am I the only one thinking those are not oak?" but then started running into a growing number of folks saying the same thing. They have a tight grain that looks like maple or possibly cherry, but the way they appear to have taken a stain makes me thing maple. Maple has a tendency to not accept stain evenly and you have some lighter and darker areas. I suspect they are not alder because that is a softer wood and I don't see any dings. They do appear to be in good shape. I'd work with them. As said above, if you have money for granite and tile floors, you have money for paint or stain. If you are willing to take the time to learn and DIY on the cabinets, you may be able to do both. You showed us a lot of the kitchen, but not two things I'd like to see -- your lighting and the cooktop. Do you have a vent hood? Does it exhaust or recirculate the air? I'm wondering if the cabinets have years of gunk built up on them. They look not only yellowed, but possibly dirty or dry. I would give them a really good cleaning for starters. You can't paint or stain until you do that anyway. Then I'd look at the lighting -- It looks like it may be adding to the yellow cast to everything. Any chance you have an older florescent fixture in the kitchen? The wood color looks better in the breakfast nook than it does in the kitchen. Changing or improving your lighting and cleaning your cabinets could make things look a lot different and neither of those should be budget busters. I would paint the walls with some color and then step back and take a look. If you want darker hardware, I'd buy new. It doesn't have to be expensive, but painting hardware is likely to be very temporary. So far, with DIY, we're looking at a few hundred dollars. I would like to remove the soffit in the kitchen itself if possible. If not, I'd paint it or give it a deep crown treatment to carry the cabinet line to the ceiling. You could also paint the ceiling crown to match the ceiling if it will not bother you that is will then be different that the rest of the house. I would not paint the window trim -- the window itself is stained wood and matches all your other windows. Once you get to that point, I would make a decision on painting, gel staining or stipping the cabinets and refinishing. Those are all things you can DIY, but paint and stripping will be time intensive -- which is why there is a lot of cost to them, especially if they need a lot of cleaning and prep work. You don't want any painter who isn't looking at good prep work because the job will not be good or last unless they do it right....See MoreWhich bathroom cabinet elevation looks better?
Comments (19)You can also have the drawers made to look like they are separate, upper lower, but have them be one deep drawer in each set. Like in #1 have 5 drawers that have a split face to look like 10, then the sink cabinet to look like 2 more drawers. Same with the coordinating cabinet if you want...although those drawers look more functional...but you could have a cabinet under the sink then the drawers on each end be quite deep, but look like 2 narrower drawers. You could have sliding trays built inside the drawers for smaller items to remain on top of the deeper drawers. For some reason, maybe based on the mcm cabinets you have elsewhere in your home, I really like #1 the best. My google skills seem to be failing me tonight; I know this is much different than your style cabinet, but a single drawer made to look like a double: not sure if this is a single or two drawers: maybe a shallow drawer in some of them (if you do deep drawers)...See MoreHow could I make my dorm room have better feng shui?
Comments (5)Hi Austin! Sorry for the radio silence but good news! You can buy that poster on amazon for $12! Here’s the link - Blue BMW Antique Car Germany German Automobile Vintage Poster Repro 12" X 16" Image Size. We Have Other https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MBIJ8NO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_spdAEbVR8H6ZM If you want to frame it you could look into the IKEA Ribba and see if the largest one is the right size. I’m glad you like the inspiration photo - I love it too! Yes, I think the beds on either side of the window will open up the space and the symmetry calms the eye - symmetry is pleasing to our brains! I’ve compiled a handful of things here - a lot of its from IKEA, some from Target, Lowe’s for the plant and Hobby Lobby for one of the pillow covers. If you like any of it let me know and I’ll post the links. And if you’re not close to IKEA or you prefer other stores let me know and we can rework it. The basket is for the headboard shelves - I think the light and fan you already have are great. You can stow the Kleenex and that white bin(?) in the basket. It’s from target. It will also help hide cords behind it. I put a bigger plant in my picture - not necessary. And actually none of this stuff is necessary but some larger objects on the shelves will help them look full without looking cluttered. Hope that sparks some inspiration! And I can post the links if you like anything!...See MoreHow could I make my dorm room look better?
Comments (3)Plants are a great addition :) Have you tried them on your half of the window sill? They make more of an impact when together. Does your roommate walk on your rug? Can you flip it to run the length of your bed w/o it interfering with your chair? You could Google "guy dorm" and click on images. That might give you more ideas....See MoreAustin
