How do you keep your butterfly bush tamed?
Comments (18)I live in Tennessee (Zone 7). My Blue Chip started blooming a few weeks ago. I was late planting this out into the flower beds. I had a busy summer. I ordered so many plants that I couldn't get everything done! Anyways..I planted it in full sun and a month later it started blooming like crazy. I've seen butterflies all over it too. I think it's a great plant. I hate the big, ugly gnarly ones my mom grows with the ugly trunks. I understand why people grow them, but they are not the most attractive plants to me. This Blue Chip is a vast improvement. They should win an ward for this plant. I'm taking some more cuttings tomorrow evening after work! I'll post some photos of it in a new thread so you can see my cute little plant in all its glory....See MoreWhat do you have blooming for butterflies right now?
Comments (4)Well I can't find my zinnia seeds. : ( I found some from a couple of years ago and if those germinate, I'll have plenty. I should have some volunteers too, but it would be nice if I could find the seeds I bought earlier this year. grrr When you mentioned perennial salvia, you reminded me that I have May Night blooming or seedlings from it at least. I don't think I still have the original plant. I need to watch and see if any hummingbirds/butterflies visit that. I don't think so though. I've seen a couple Monarchs fluttering by but they didn't stop and have seen a few Black Swallowtails. I have never seen a Zebra Swallowtail in my yard. Those are the ones that use Pawpaw as a host plant. I have a five inch tall Pawpaw planted by my fence row now and two more, just as small, in pots that I will plant this fall. I planted two last fall but only one made it through the winter....See MoreDo you prune back your butterfly bush every spring?
Comments (6)I ran across a test a man did on his showing progress photos. He trimmed one down to the ground in early spring and left the other one next to it untrimmed to compare. By mid season, both shrubs were the exact same height except the untrimmed was not nearly as thick and robust and had far fewer blooms. Also, the dead blooms never fell off from the previous season so he had new blooms with last years together. Part of the experiment was to see if that actually did happen. It did. I am trimming mine next year. chrissy60-- if you want a small shrub there are cultivars that are much smaller available. I saw some just today at Home Depot. They were short and loaded with blooms....See MoreHow often do you add salt to your pool?
Comments (22)I did not see you post the only relevant information needed: what is the salt level of the pool? Saying you have no chlorine is not an indication of needing more salt. It is not uncommon for heavy chlorine demand to outpace how much a chlorine generator can generate in 24 hours (if you want to see how much chlorine each salt system is capable of producing in 24 hours read this: Which salt chlorine system can generate the most chlorine in 24 hours?) In times of heavy chlorine demand simply add some liquid chlorine to your pool to help the salt system keep up. Additionally you need to be testing your water for pH, free chlorine, total chlorine, total alkalinity, cyanuric acid and TDS (total dissolved solids). Without knowing these numbers for your pool, in addition to the ppm of salt that you have, you will only be guessing as to what the problem is and how to fix it....See Moredocmom_gw
