Living room layout and ideas - please help!

Hi all,

We recently purchased our first home, a 1970s house and one of the first places we want to update is the living room.

I have popped a photo of the space below (this is a real estate photo, not our furnishings). I would really appreciate suggestions on how to freshen this space (note budget is limited so we can't completely remodel it unfortunately). My initial thoughts are replacing the amber glass panes at the bottom of the windows (this will help the yellow cast it throws into the room), giving the room a new coat of white paint (including the wood bookcases and window frames) and new window furnishings (curtains or blinds, what do you think)?

The other challenge is the layout and where to position the TV. I have also enclosed a photo of the floor plan and as you will see, the room is long and narrow with lots of door ways and windows, so there is a limited amount of options here - essentially on a table or wall-mounted at the opposite end to the windows.

That photo looks heavily photo-shopped. Could you post some photos of your own with the living room as current, warts and all?

Hi @tangerinedoor, thanks for your comment! As it's a real estate photo, I agree with you on the photoshopping - it looks a lot brighter in the photo than in real life, at the moment it is on the dark side and has a yellow tinge to it due to the amber glass.

There is also another section of this room not visible in the photo, that you will see in the floor plan. We are awaiting settlement, so unfortunately I'm not able to post any further images but was hoping for inspiration in the meantime.

Happy legs.... Thanks, but if I did that.... It would be right in the middle of the walk way from front door, to the rest of the house.... It has to be against wall where it is... Weahy.... Not sure if this was link or pic... But nothing showed up..... I understand that my design isn't perfect... But I guess, my initial question was if anyone sees a better, more efficient layout..... While everyone has given great ideas that make total sense on paper, I think if you were here in person, you might see what I see.... Trust me I have moved furniture everywhere and tried everything, it just doesn't make sense for our family right now.... In my reading and trying to learn about the best layout for a living room....i found something that said, basically....'The goal of any small living space is to use every area as efficiently as possible'... And with kids and their toys, I think we are doing a better job at that...? I'm not meaning to be defensive, just having discussion. Thanks again for everyone's opinions!!!!

What are you willing/able to do? What, specifically, are you unhappy with? Are you considering replacing the furniture? Paint the walls? Without more information it's difficult for me to make suggestions. However, I'd strongly suggest moving that chair away from the draperies/window. And also change the paint color. Is the room as small as it looks in these pictures? If so, that furniture, in my opinion, is far too large. When you say "Beautify my living room again" (again being the word I'm referring to), what did it look like before when you considered it beautiful? I think you've got a lot to work with. It would also probably be a good idea for you to post this also in the Home Decorating Forum.

Hi Salonva, thank you! This is my first ever layout I’m planning, so I’m super excited for new thoughts & ideas. Rug dimensions: 5.3’ x 7.3’ Sofa length would be around 6’ to leave at least 6 in. on each side. I might forget the table and just do 2 boho poufs instead.

Maybe you could fill in some details then. E.g.

What's the flooring?

Are those built-in bookcases?

Is there a wood stove?

Is that brick still there?

What style do you like?

Also, start an Idea Book in your Houzz account and browse through the million or so photos to give you some ideas. Post your faves into your Idea Book. Then folks will know what you're aiming for.

Sure, thank you.

- The flooring is carpet.

- Yes, the bookcases are built in.

- The wood heater is still there.

- I'm a fan Hamptons/coastal style, so hoping to achieve something closer to that.

I have started an Idea Book too.
