Help! What Did You Pay For Recessed Lites & Install!
Comments (8)Have the electricians separate out the material and labor. LED bulbs alone cost $25 to $50 each. So you have nearly $1000 in bulbs alone if you add the mark up and etc. My trim cost about $40 each. I am using a nice reflective trim with chrome on them. Again, you need to know what they cost each for your special situation. Depening on the difficulty of wiring, 5 switches can be many hours of wiring. My electricians charge $75 per hour. Let's say 5 hours of wiring for switches. That is another few hundred. When you say $ per light, it is all misleading. It depends on how much wiring is required and how exposed the walls are....See MoreHow much did you pay for your full reno?
Comments (88)Midland, Texas. My suggestion is to get as many bids as possible on all aspects of your job. The variations from one contractor to another was HUGE. Also, I splurged on important things and went middle of the road on other things. But for this area it is a nice remodel... I live in a nice neighborhood... my house is the smallest on the cul de sac... my neighbors house is well over 4,000 sf on a half acre or more lot. Obviously my house is no million dollar home ;) (there's a few of those neighborhoods here) but I am a perfectionist and it is good. Not perfect... the cabinets are from a local cabinet maker and painted on site with a reputable painter- but it's not perfect but "good" and definitely better than acceptable. I could have easily spent $20k more on the kitchen with little to no additional ROI. We also did some work ourselves... i.e. All the demo, and any other non skilled labor we could do before the pros took over. We are also doing the trim work ourselves (baseboards and door casings). We bargained shopped for the appliances (all new Bosh except for range and bev fridge); new vinyl windows and not wood clad (no one has wood in this neighborhood); buying anso nylon carpet buy using one of the in stock colors; splurged on bath tile; got a good price on wood look tile $3.75sf for Marazzi American Estates for the other flooring; splurged on a few light fixtures but most are pottery barn level. Found a great deal on mosaic tile that's going behind master bath vanities; re-using the master bath mirrors and having them repurposed with bevel edge. We made and have been keeping a detailed spreadsheet of all expenses and making other cuts when necessary to stay on budget (for example, we didn't get the pot filler because we need to shave a little off and we didn't want to spend on the faucet but we have a second sink 2 ft away that can fill pots... tons of little $1000 decisions like that add up! Honestly, I have lost money on being indecisive. We had a general contractor for the kitchen, master bath, plumbing and electrical, but we subbed out all the other work ourselves. Also, we didn't use the highest end contractor, but we also didn't use the cheapest. Just middle of the road people honest people we felt good with and that would work hard and wanted to do good work. They all came with recommendations from friends, our designer, or flooring store sales person....See MoreNeed to see if this is crazy...what did you pay to mount your TV?
Comments (29)My husband reminded me that we basically had the exact same thing done on our porch...using our normal electrician (the one who wired the house when we built but who’s company is only doing new construction during the pandemic) and he had to drill through brick! Apparently the price we paid was substantially lower bc I don‘t even remember what it was, lol! I’m thinking around $200. Perhaps he doesn’t want to do it...but I would have preferred he said that upfront before taking time out of my day to come over and have me show him what’s going on. I mean, I told them the scope of work on the phone when I initially called. They could have said they were too busy for small jobs (which I don’t think they are, he came over pretty quickly for the quote and indicated our window for installation was doable.) Oh well, I’ve got two more guys coming next week. I’ll let y’all know what they say!...See MoreHOLY STICKER SHOCK! - What did you pay?
Comments (91)@sabrown - Thanks! I'm all about trying to make a timeless look. We worked with Superior Woodcraft for our custom cabinets in our kitchen in Philly and had them copy that design for our new home in NYC. I looked at tons of butler pantry pics and got really specific about the width of the styles, inset cabinets, and the molding, which they replicated from a salvaged door I had on my laundry closet in Philly. They are installing a built in bookcase in our living room next week to match. The color is Farrow and Ball White Tie to match the walls in our kitchen and other living space. It was not a great paint for them to work with. Our Philly cabinets were Ben Moore Maritime White and looked great too. Superior is woman owned and run and they work around the East Coast. They've been in business for 60 years. It wasn't the smoothest experience this time around but I chalk it up to Covid. Their customer service is outstanding....See Moremike_54321
