Comments (4)I think that some fairly inexpensive things could make a dramatic difference. First I would replace the iron columns with some more substantial 6x6 supports (with some moldings perhaps) and add some railings. Also, I would not paint the porch, but stain it. I think taking out the concrete porch would be a very big project. I would also add railings and wider wooden steps to the front door. Paint or replace the front door for pop and in your individual taste. The shutters look out of place and out of scale for the picture window. Shutters should look as if they would actually work, these do not. Once this is done the right of your house would be heavy and you would need to balance this out with a nice curved bed on the left with a fairly large tree to add balance. Zone 5 maybe a nice magnolia. Fill in the large bed around the tree with some nice plantings. Towards the road cries out for a small fence with a gate or maybe some hedges with more beds. A flagstone path up to the front steps. A small tree (maybe a Japanese maple) on the right and curved beds along the walkway and driveway. I think this would take your home from plain to fantastic with the least cost and with things that you can probably do on your own. I am sure you can. I do like the idea of shutters, but think you should look at different sizes and styles. I don't like being critical, however I think that by asking for help you are probably looking for honest evaluation....See MoreCurb Appeal!!! Help modernize this 1970s Texas waterfront home
Comments (5)Some mock-up pictures! Light grey roof, added lots of glass to the front, added shutter over bath window, added courtyard. Added courtyard, left the front door (painted wood), left the red roof. Light grey roof, added light fascia boards, added courtyard, front door is painted wood. Example of dark roof. Light grey roof, white fascia, added glass at front yard, added courtyard, added bigger bath window. Med grey roof, dark grey fascia boards, added glass entrance, added bigger bath window, added courtyard...See MoreRanch House or MCM? Facade needs help to improve curb appeal
Comments (22)thanks! kendallinsd I think those window changes to the bedrooms would make a big difference to the curb appeal. by the way, I am not against painting brick. if done right, it will be fine. however, yours is a nice muted reddish tone. I think what's not working is that there's too much contrast between the brick and siding, breaking up the shapes. the mockups houssaon and I did for you look better because it gives your house a more cohesive look. I also encourage keeping (or restoring) that pergola. again, it's part of the midcentury shape of that house that makes it special. but like I suggested before, a wood pillar might look better there. have fun. post pics as you improve this adorable home!...See MoreDesperately need to enhance curb appeal
Comments (3)Box need good drainage (= root rot susceptibility), can also be prone to serious box blight damage depending on specific variety and site conditions. Most kinds of smoke bush are quite large growing - as in becoming tree sized. Some like to cut these down to near the ground each year but every time I have seen one treated in this fashion the replacement tops were sparse and leggy looking. Dwarf Alberta spruce often has bug problems even in my mild summer area. In addition it is very formal looking. As far as can be made out in these much too far away and dark pictures you have been been planting too big growing kinds of shrubs too close to the house - consider deeper beds and smaller plant choices....See MoreRelated Professionals
