hello! some first questions...
Comments (5)Home Depot stock cabinets aren't the best constructed. Sure, they're heavy duty enough for a laminate countertop, but I don't think they'll hold up in the long run to granite countertop. Their hardware is also pretty poor to use for a long term installation. They're designed for builders who have to rip them out after every tenant has destroyed them. Now, Home Depot does carry American Woodmark cabinets, and they are a BIG step up in quality compared to their stock cabinets. They're also not that much more money. I'm not trying to make you feel bad about your budget. I have done plenty of kitchens in that range, just not usually with upgrades like granite tops, or with that low a level of cabinets. I respect the fact that 10K is all you want to spend, but putting granite on those cabinets, when the cabinets may not last you 5 years, is misspending that limited budget. If you have to allocate more of that budget towards cabinetry on the front end, then do that and put a laminate coutnertop in for now and replace down the road with granite when the budget recovers from the initial remodel....See MoreOur DIY Kitchen Remodel on a *tight* budget, first up floor plan!

Comments (35)I just did a complete DIY kitchen reno in a rental home using Diamond cabs from Lowes. My first choice was Ikea, but timing demanded we look elsewhere. I've posted lots of photos on my reveal (linked). We chose maple slab doors in Storm, a dark gray. I'd have preferred cherry for the grain, but opted for maple for budget reasons. You might want to consider that, I think the maple is fine, but might look a bit too uniform in a more transitional kitchen. I was happy with the cabinets, given the price. The finish was well done, the hardware seemed to be of good quality, and the doors were all adjusted nearly perfectly. I hacked a broom closet using Ikea components, which my new tenants have been oooing and ahhing over. I wanted a symmetrical look, so opted for drawers on the island, and added aftermarket pullouts in the cabs to reduce costs, which installed readily. My chief complaint was the shelves. If I were to use these for my own home, and I might, I would select plywood shelves. The shelves would be lighter weight, and I did not like the unfinished sides of the shelves. Good luck! Comments (43)@tuckerdc I will try to be what I wanted to hear when I was tackling this. It's gonna be tough, but if you are determined, you can do it. I will say this. I watched a ton of renovation videos, a lot of videos on YouTube about painting laminate cabinets and what brushes and paints to use for the best results. I did a lot of Pinteresting through this (my username is MrsDVazquez if you want to follow my renovations board), and read a lot of articles. I'm also pretty handy and have tackled other renovations before, though much smaller than this. I would strongly suggest getting some help from friends that might know a bit more or that at least can help with the lifting and working of things (like our countertops) as these are not projects you can do alone. In the absence of that, consider task rabbit if you can't afford a professional, though I would highly recommend a professional with some knowledge. My dad used to make cabinets many years ago, so I had good assistance with that. Take your time planning so when you are ready, you know where to start. And have a clear vision for what you want. Look up photos anywhere you can of the full vision to see if it makes sense in the end. Make sure you stay on budget, read tons of reviews on the products you are using, and then be ready for some hard, but rewarding work. Good luck to you!...See Morelive_wire_oak
