Appropriate roses and Palatine nursery?
Comments (16)Mike Rivers is spot on for your definition of the spiral shape you desire. High centered, exhibition form, etc...will get you what you want. Palatine has the best bareroot roses on the North American continent at the present time in my opinion. They offer mostly Kordes roses which are known for their superiour toughness to weather conditions and temperature extremes compared to most other breeders of hybrid tea roses. I grow in Northwest Missouri and do not winter protect specifically. I rely on Ma Nature and the leaves that fall from a couple of big trees on my property to gather around the base of the bushes and that seems to insulate mine well enough. I really don't lose many if any at all during the winter even though I grow a couple that are "notoriously winter tender". St. Patrick, Marilyn Monroe, Color Magic, etc.. are some that supposedly can't survive my winters, yet I have grown these for five years or more and have not lost any of them. I do generally have to prune to almost ground level in the spring especially on St. Patrick, but they always come roaring back and within a couple of months you could never tell they were pruned so low. The main thing is to make sure your roses are HEALTHY and not stressed going into winter to give them the best chance to survive winter. John...See MorePalatine bareroots have HUGE roots! (pics)
Comments (29)For the most part, my Palatine roses did ok this past season. Altho one did die on me for some reason. I plant them all in big pots and mulch them well. Don't know why, but BONANZA FREELANDER gave me a nice couple blooms right away, and then suddenly turned brown and died. I didn't ask for a replacement, as it was at the end of summer, and it had gotten off to a good start, so it was just a fluke. Not their responsibility. I ordered another one because I liked what I saw. LAGUNA FREELANDER was a bit of a disappointment. I'd seen pics on the Kordes website a couple yrs before they offered it, and was expecting a much more "lavender-purple" color, but it ended up being a pinky-almost magenta sort of color. But that could change with subsequent bloomings as it matures. All the rest I got from them were good growers and decent bloomers. As for Pickering's roses... they faired ok also. I just wish CREME CARAMEL would've been a better bloomer. But it's really hard to judge roses in the first season anyway. This time around, I opted to have my Palatine's delivered in the very early spring. Thought I'd see how that goes. I never really had any problems with any of the Canadian rose coming later in the season. In fact, the Horticos sometimes do better later, but I do have theirs coming in a week or so. I'm so ready for winter to go away!!!...See MorePalatine Roses open for ordering
Comments (27)Nastara - order now. They let you select when you want them shipped. I'm having mine shipped the first week in April. You want to plant bareroots early in the spring - earlier than you would a potted plant. But with the spring rains I usually can't plant until April or sometimes May (it will be too wet). So I ask for the roses at the beginning of April and I keep them in the garage until I can plant them. They hold up fine for a few weeks if you keep them hydrated. I will agree with Diane that Carmel Fairytale is quite disease resistant. It and Elina are taking over my garden while my other roses look like sticks. I will warn you that Carmel Fairytale gets quite large even in a cold zone where it will dieback every winter....See MoreWas Palatine’s Instagram Story a Rose Reveal?
Comments (42)@Kristine LeGault 8a pnw Kristine, I hate to "like" your comment, lol, but I do agree the whole experience was frustrating. There's a lot more detail to my travails with their website, but a lot of it is repetitive and not very interesting! But just one example is the Ascot I first had in my cart that was "sold out", then back, then "sold out" AGAIN before I could check out...on I think the fifth or sixth attempt. This was after hovering over my computer for at least three hours at this point. Never again....See MoreKristine LeGault 8a pnw
