Vertical Blinds in Architectural Digest
Comments (13)I like Pal's quote: "Context is everything". Not only do I try to keep in mind the architectural style (or lack of) of my house, but I try to stay true to my overall style of decorating. My overall traditional/vintage style is also dictated by my background, my personal life style, who I am (and my spouse), and the feel of my home. I live in a very basic early 70's ranch with absolutely no fancy architectural features. I don't have a fireplace, I don't have a staircase, I don't have beautiful built-ins, I don't have tall ceilings, and I don't have elaborate trims. When I replaced all my trim, I kept it fairly modest, while trying to add a little height and detail without overdoing it. My DD couldn't understand why I didn't use all the cute little plynth blocks in the corners and at at the ends of the base runs. My response was that it was a little more "pretentious" than I wanted for my home. As I slowly started replacing my windows, I went with well-made but basic wood clad, double hung so that they could be painted white to match my inside trim, and a color to cooordinate with my outside. No fancy arches or grids. Granite countes would stick out like a sore thumb on my plain, poly'd plywood cabinets. Compromise was a nice laminate. Will paint cabinets when I get time which will be an appropriate upgrade, still maintaining my vintage look. Silk dupioni drapes would look like lipstick on a pig in my house. A nice cotton/linen blend is perfect or all cotton. While I can love and appreciate all these things in the right home and setting, I have the common sense to know they are not appropiate for mine. This doesn't have anything to do with vertical drapes, but if I had a place where verticals were the most appropriate, I would use them. Tuesday...See MoreWhat about vertical blinds?

Comments (14)A bit late to this board but my 2 cents' worth. We live in a raised ranch so have 2 picture windows: one in the first floor den and one directly above in the second floor living room. Our style is contemporary so we have shades or blinds only throughout, no drapes. We have fabric verticals in the second floor living room and really like them. When closed, they provide privacy but filter enough light so that the room isn't dark; when opened there is plenty of light but still a bit of privacy. We are replacing the old solid vinyl verticals in the first floor den with fabric verticals for two reasons: One, so that the window treatments are consistent from the street and two, so that there isn't a direct view into our home even when open. If we were to put some sort of roller or cellular shade and wanted to open it, the entire room would be on display. So to me, fabric verticals are a nice clean look, work in our space, and are not outdated....See MoreHelp! I don’t want vertical blinds for sliding glass doors.
Comments (8)Thank you @Patricia Colwell that is what I needed. And I posted a pic of the space not sure if you are referring to entire space. This was the only pic I could get from someone elseks home, so please bear with me. My home is still to be built this year. Here is a clear one without the measurements. The patio doors are in the great room, the kitchen is to the right and the other area with windows is the kitchen nook. All 12 ft ceiling, so I need something fairly coordinated, but the nook will have blinds/drapes. I just do not want verticals for the patio doors. I am really not crazy about sheers either but would consider. I suppose if I do sheers they will need to be at the same height the side drapes will be. Not sure I can do anything that would sit at the top of the patio doors, unless they are solar shades but I don’t know if those would look good, either....See Morejck910
