Sitting Area in Master Bedroom
We're updating a home we've recently purchased that was built in 2006 and heavily decorated in the Tuscan style. Our first two renovation projects: 1) replace carpet with wood flooring (done); and 2) paint - replace brown/beige walls and trim with off-white for walls (SW Alabaster) and white trim, and replace brown ceilings (yes brown) with white. Many decorating dilemmas abound, but one that has me really stumped is what to do with a sitting alcove/area in the master bedroom. This area is 10' x 10' half decagon with 12 ft ceiling and 5 windows. Before and after pictures are attached. The chandelier would be updated (thinking a drum type) and adding a rug (not sure if a round or rectangle would work best). My husband suggested building a window seat or perhaps a low bookcase. I love to read and see it as an area to read and relax as it overlooks our pool. I'm trying to keep a Mediterranean feel to the house as there is a lot of travertine stone through out the home. Thanks in advance for advice.

Comments (7)Most welcome. I love, love, love my wood slat blinds. Be prepared to spend a bundle, though! Esp. Hunter Douglas - very expensive, but they're well made. I didn't go with HD because of the cost, and I'm kind of regretting it. One bit of advice: know the white you have on your would trim, i.e.: Benjamin Moore White Dove, whatever it is. Go to a hardware store that sells that paint, get a chip of the color, and take it w/u to the blind store so you can match the white as best as possible. They do come in dramatically different whites, and presumably you'll want the blinds to match the wood trim and window grids as best as possible, if you go with the wood blinds. The way the film goes on is you spray the window with a water/detergent blend (you can make it yourself or you can buy the bottles of it that 3M and Gila make for it, but all it is is water and I think a blob of dish detergent. I looked it up online and made my own). Then you peel a little bit of the backing away, with the backing facing the window, press a starting point of the film to the window, then with a squeegee, start smoothly pressing the film to the window slowly as you slowly peel the backing downward, in tandem with squeegeeing the film to the window as you go. If it creases, no big deal. Just pull it back off the window past the crease point and continue on. It's not very hard. just takes patience. The kind you'll want, though, the mirrored backing (since it's the clearest from inside looking out) is also the most difficult to work with. Naturally! Maybe you could do a combination of both? - move bed into corner == two walls for windows - room for an office area - having the closet and bath in the same area == someone can get ready without traversing back & forth through the bedroom (and possibly waking the other person) - lots of room for a reach in closet opposite the walk-in closet (linen storage; shoes; out of season stuff; etc) - I might remove the shelves from the bathroom - your WC is a bit tight (where do you stand once you're inside & want to close the door??) Comments (12)What I would use a sitting area for would be to read, do some crochet or knitting, have tea. (maybe watch TV or a movie). So I would need something that is comfortable to put my feet up. I'd go for the sofa and a chair/ottoman, with a table between the two. At the very least two chairs with ottomans so the feet can go up. Maybe even small-profile recliners. 4 years agoBuild a deep bookcase under all the windows so it can comfortably support you and some pillows/cushions if you want to sit on top to see out the windows. Add a pair of chairs and a reading lamp or two, plus a table.

I think your idea of a reading area is perfect. I’d keep it simple and cozy — very plush, comfy chair and ottoman, pretty throw, table with lamp, rug. Or, two chairs with ottomans, or large chaise (I can’t tell dimensions in pic).
I have large window seats in both my bedroom and guest bedroom ... they are never used for sitting. They look good, but are just more surfaces for me to dust (I took the cushions off). I keep a few pillows and a couple of plants on them. If I were building, I’d rather have the space they take up for furniture or whatever. And since you have a view to the pool, I wouldn’t want anything blocking the area right in front of the windows. I’d want it open.
You and your husband are clearly talented and have great taste, you shouldn’t feel nervous at all. Take your time, do lots of researching for ideas and inspiration, and enjoy. :)
This is the only way I’d do window seating. 😉

4 years agoGreat upgrade/reno! I think the area where you removed the columns looks a bit off, like it needs something. How about adding some sleek corbels on each side? Here are some that are simple and clean lined.
