What is the name of that quartzite? Does the spot feel raised or does it feel different than the areas around it if you touch it with your finger tips? Is it the same finish or is it duller or shinier?

It’s Aria quartzite, and hasn‘t been sealed yet. The spot feels the same and looks the same shine-wise as other areas of the counter. It literally looks like a bleach spot.

The yellow circle shows the “before” of the area where the stain now appears.

Can you put something like a coon on the counter and take a photo to give us an idea of the size?

Stories like this reinforce my choice of allover-patterned granite for my kitchen remodels. There have been no surface color changes or discolorations over the years since either granite was installed.

Has that plastic sheeting been covering the countertops and you just pulled it back to take this photo? If so, that could be what’s preventing moisture (if there is any) from drying out.

Also, what products/methods did your fabricator use in his stain removal attempt?

This quartzite is beautiful. I don’t have any advise about the stain. Is it in a very prominent place? Because in the worst case scenario you might have to learn to live with it. There is the old tried and true method of putting something on top of it to hide it. I know this must make you so angry, because you spent a large amount of money on this with the expectation of perfection. In the “big picture” scheme of things in my opinion the beauty of all the other areas of quartzite outweigh the stain. Perfect imperfection. Like Cindy Crawford’s mole, or beauty mark. I hope it fades away

Sammy, the painters covered the counter yesterday to finish some paint nearby (just fyi, this is not a paint stain however, it was there when the counter was installed), but we have had the plastic off to "dry the stone out" pretty much since it was installed on Thursday.

I believe our fabricator used acetone, windex (??) and even a torch to try to get the stain out - with no luck. They are coming back Monday to re-evaluate.

Hoping if we just give it time, the stain will fade, since I really do love it.

rachann61 I'm having similar thoughts. Unfortunately the mark is in the most obvious spot, right in the center of the island. I wish it was on the back countertop.

So no poultice...but a torch? 🤐

I wonder if the dark areas are scorch marks.

I would be extremely skeptical of the "it just needs to dry out" argument, as being wet generally makes things darker (as his cleaning attempts did, assuming that's water darkening the stone and not damage), not whiter as this spot is showing.

My husband said that, being quartzite, light will shine through it, so if you can put a bright light (e.g., led flashlight) underneath, you can at least know for sure if it is part of the stone or a stain. If it's a stain on the surface, the light will look different. He was saying the sealer could have brought out the variation in color, but the way light comes through would tell you for sure.

It almost looks like some sort of chemical cleaning agent spilled on your stone.

Thanks, Critter bug, I’ll try the light technique. However, the stone has not yet been sealed. They are holding off on sealing it until we know what’s up with the mark.

That's because it probably is, especially since the shine and feel were unaffected. Probably toilet bowl cleaner or something similar, not bleach.

I'm glad I didn't get the call to remove the discoloration your fabricators have made trying to remove what can't be removed. A poultice may pull out their mess, but the white spot's staying.

You're going to learn to live with it with a discount or replace the piece.

If you drop any toilet bowl cleaner, motorcycle chain cleaner, or anything similar on granite of any pattern, the color's coming out and the finish doesn't change.

Toilet bowl cleaner spilled inside a box and left overnight on new granite island. Put a placemat over it or tear it out. Gloss is perfect and you can't feel it.

Erika, i also have Aria quartize and i just found a similar white spot in a corner...no idea when that happened but its out of view. what did you end up doing and have you had any further issues?

Placemat, toaster, or knife holder does the trick every time.
