Installing island overhang support posts

After ordering our cabinets and seeing them in our space, we realized we wanted a counter overhang to fill some of the space and give more seating. The counter tops were ordered and installed before I could find support posts that I wanted and have them painted, and so currently there are just 2x4s under to help support. How do we now after the fact, install the 2 posts to the quartz counter top? Do we just locktite the top of the post to the underside of the counter and then pin nail the bottom to the floor, or is there some kind of bracket we should have had installed before they laid the counter? I've attached a photo of the "island" - it's partly against a wall so I guess technically it's a peninsula, and a photo of the post I purchased. Pardon the construction mess. Also these will be stand alone posts so there will be no trim under the counter going back to join the cabinet if that makes sense?

No, you can’t glue the darn posts on. They MUST be joined with stretcher bars, and then more stretcher bars have to be joined to the island side itself. Plus cross lives across to form an H shape. The island must be rebuilt, properly, and safely.

It was beyond negligent for the stone people to drop that and run. They should have never installed it, and charged a trip charge to come back after you had proper supports built. They need to come and remove it so that you can fix that.

There’s no good way to build the proper support with the stone in the way. And it’s a HUGE safety risk to kill a pet or small child. They’d be on the hook for a lawsuit, just like you would.

You can retrofit support, but that was hillbilly criminal for them to leave that.

I know this is not going to help the original questioner posted in 2007 and I sure wish I had found this question back then... But for those of you looking for "THE" answer... hear you go. The Amastin Company, Corryton TN, has been providing steel support bars in supporting hard surface counters to the East TN market since 1995. In this particular case, which is a common one, Amastin offers a 31" long x 2-1/2" wide x 1/2" thick steel support bar that would bump and mount into the back of the front face frame, notch and recess flush across the back cabinet mounting strip. This support would overhang 8" leaving it approx 4" from the counter edge making it virtually hidden. Amastin has the overhang support thing figured out and if you have any questions or in need of custom support advise... Amastin is place to find the answers. The Marble Institute of America recommends that 3cm granite needs additional support over 10" cantilever overhang and that 2cm granite over 6" cantilever overhang. However, the fabricator is warrantor of your counter and it is widely practiced and accepted that 3cm of 12" overhang is acceptable without additional support. How wide (or deep) is your countertop in total? I'm being a bit extreme in my example but if you have a 2 foot wide counter and 11.5 inches of that was unsupported then you'd have the countertop tipping over very easily. However, if your coutertop is 4 feet wide (or deep) and 11.5 inches of that is unsupported then the weight of the supported side is more than adequate to keep that countertop from tipping towards the unsupported side. We have a 3 foot wide counter that is 6 feet long and 10.5 inches of that is unsupported and I can sit (105 lbs) on the unsupported side and it doesn't budge! But, you also didn't indicate what your concern is...are you concerned with it tipping or with your cabinets not being able to handle the overall weight? I'm assuming the tipping issue, but didn't know. Also, they should have put a bead of silicone or something to seal the coutnertop to the top of the cabinets. HTH...

Similar thread recently. Joe posted pics of installing corbels into a cabinet. http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/3549316/quartzite-peninsula-overhang?n=11 For overhangs you need to have corbels built into the cabinet or support brackets. That far of an overhang I would recommend corbels built into the cabinet. Might even need support legs honestly. You need to be confident there is no movement, if they do corbels and it still wiggles a little due to the distance, then do support legs also. Remember your considering this a table... tables usually have legs. Keep that in mind.

That needs to be pulled immediately! It’s a huge risk. The support for this has to be integrated with the cabinet sides, just like creating a table. The entire design must be created to support the additional weight. Posts are not stable without the framework to keep them in place. That framework could be invisible steel, or wood, but it HAS to exist, and be designed as a whole.

This is a 36” x26” overhang. We used a 1/4” steel plate here, with small welded flanges on the edges to decrease deflection and increase rigidity. It’s bolted to the 3/4” cabinet box with bent tabs, and then the decorative end panel covered the side. It has a pin locator in the floor for the post, for additional stability against kids sliding in socks. And of course the island is firmly fastened to the foundation too.

Why do you not want an apron? If you want wooden legs, I'd do an apron to match. I'm no expert, but I'm thinking the apron could then be safely attached to the island and stone top. But I doubt that attachment is a DIY project. If the more knowledgeable posters above say to have the top pulled and reattached safely, that's the route to go. You don't want to take a chance with stone falling on a child - or anyone for that matter.

If those stone hacks don’t get out there TODAY to take that up, call the local news station. Your KD’s ears should already be burnt to a crisp for even allowing that to happen.
