Can I save my scorched succulents?
Comments (8)Don't be surprised if you find burns pop up on your plant over the course of the next week. They don't always show immediate signs of burning. I've seen many people burn their jades by throwing them into direct sun. They should grow out the damage over time though. I personally have pruned lots of plants, most recently I burned a bunch of new echeverias. They were little guys and grew out their burned leaves in about a 2 month period and are thriving now. Good luck! also, hens & chicks is a common name used for both sempervivum and echeverias which prefer way different natural habitat and benefit from being treated a little differently in container/garden culture. A picture would help determine what type of "hens & chick" plant you have....See MoreHow to save my succulents?!
Comments (6)You didn't go wrong by buying them at IKEA (I can tell you that!), but I really think it might be the soil. If you can, get some perlite. Wash it, to get out dust, and do a 50/50 mix with perlite and the mix you already have. Note that it will look like a LOT of perlite. Good luck! ~palmsandsnow...See MoreCan I save my succulents?
Comments (4)Your soil looks very wet and water retaining. The most commonly recommended mix here is commercial cactus & succulent mix combined 50/50 with perlite or pumice. The straight commercial mix is thought to hold too much water, too long. I would suggest repotting. Don't water right away after repotting. Water a few days later or even longer if the potting mix was damp. Not sure if the one on the lower left will make it. Are the leaves mushy? You might think the soil dries out quickly, but often it's damp down under. Use a wooden skewer, inserted into the soil for a time, pull out to see if it's damp--do this before watering. You will probably be surprised because I don't think the soil you are using will dry out quickly. (Depends on your gardening zone though). Don't put them in a bigger pot, transition into full sun gradually unless they are used to it already....See Morehow to save my succulents
Comments (1)Grafted plants as your ruby ball usually do not live for many years. The rootstock (the bottom plant) is very vigorous and continue growing as in your case. It may be Hylocereus undatus or similar plant. Many grow quite large eventually, with some hard aerial roots growing as in your photo. They are also quite prickly! You can grow it as a plant, just be aware that it gets quite large and probably best to grow on a support-trellis of some kind, tied to it and perhaps even pruning some shoots to manage it if kept indoors. There are few different plants that are used for rootstock....See Morejacqueline Yang
