I slept on linen bedding by Rough Linen. I love it. DH loves it. Also on one of the guest bedroom beds and DGD loves too. I wash and lightly dry but do not iron. I get out of the dryer immediately and fold the flat sheet (and as well as I can the fitted), so they don't wrinkle and once you put on the bed, it helps flatten. They are warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

I tried linen sheets a few years ago and didn't like them. I understand that they get softer the more you wash them, but I found them rough and uncomfortable. I don't like slick sheets either. I prefer the organic cotton sheets from Pottery Barn. They aren't rough or slick and they launder without a lot of wrinkles if you don't let them sit in the dryer.

I do have a linen blanket that I love.

I haven't had the sheets, but pillowcases from the former Chambers catalog. Loved them, even though they did need ironing. In fact, I wore them out, we used them that often.

I had a linen/cotton blend duvet that was very nice, machine wash and dry and that could be taken from the dryer warm and not require ironing.

I have linen sheets from Rough Linen, and yes, they do require ironing, which takes a very long time. However, after washing only two or three times, they are very soft, and I do like them a lot, but I also like cotton sheets that do not have to be ironed.

Lars, I'll be selling my mother's mangler. If it still works, it will make ironing the sheets and table cloths faster.

I don't think I've slept on linen sheets, but I do prefer cotton. I googled "What are the softest sheets, and this link from Amazon appeared.

A year ago I needed extra sheets for myself and the guest bedroom and bought a set from Amazon (can't remember the name), and I went by ratings and they are the softest ever at an extremely low price.

I realize some ratings are fake, but not when there are almost a 1,000 4-5 star ratings.

In 2018 I ordered these pillows for the guest room which are for side sleepers. I decided to try them and oh.my.gosh, they are the best. I lay on one and hug the other as all good side sleepers do, and they're still going strong!

I have tried linen sheets and they are too rough for me, even after several washings. Smooth percale sheets, ironed and changed 2x a week for maximum comfort and coolness.

Jakebedy, I was afraid DH would not like them, but was pleasantly surprised when he did.

I bought my first set of linen sheets at Christmas. At first I thought I did not like them. They were scratchier than I expected but my body temp stayed consistent and I liked that a lot. I do not like fabric softener, too chemical, but I read to try white vinegar and after a few washes with vinegar I will now only buy linen sheets but they are a learned live for me.

Another fan of Rough Linen bedding. I occasionally skip ironing them, but I do prefer them to be ironed. Not a big deal because I ironed my cotton sheets, too. Love that linen is cool in summer and warm in winter. Rough Linen now has fitted bottom sheets. Those are nice since I'm not as strong as I once was when it comes to lifting a heavy king mattress.

Linen all the way for me. I sure don’t iron them, but then again I am usually able to hang them outside to dry on the clothesline. If the weather is bad, I only put in the dryer until damp dry, lay across the bed for an hour or so and they’ll dry without wrinkles.

I’m fortunate to have inherited my grandmothers bed linens and I also have purchased from Rough Linen and Linoto. I can’t sleep on anything else! Orkney linen is my absolute favorite for bedding.

We sleep on linen sheets from Rough Linen and since having them have used the cotton sheets maybe three times. My husband sometimes irons them, sometimes jut the pillowcases and maybe the edge of the top cover (we use a summer cover instead of a tucked in top sheet and blanket. It is great for warmer weather and we can add a quilt or comforter in cold weather. Linen doesn't chill in cooler weather and breathes better when it's warmer. When pressed and first put on the bed, they have a slight crispness to them and you may notice the fibers of the weave slightly, but after the first night, they feel smooth to me -- and that is with DH probably using starch. He likes it and if he irons, well....

Oh -- if you smooth the damp linen with your hands, you can often avoid pressing. And linen dries faster than cotton. Much faster.

Rough Linen is having a spring sale. Too bad they're sold out of their pj's, those would have been nice. But their linen's are made in China so I have to wonder what their markup is on price.

I have Parachute bedding, I like it. I got it at a very deep discount, I don't like it enough to think it is worth the full price they charge for it.

I have some linen pillowcases, but I find linen that's soft enough to sleep on tends to wear out more quickly than cotton.

I think a good 100% cotton percale is softer than any linen, and gets even softer with use.

BTW, has anybody had a problem with linens labeled 100% cotton becoming pilled? I recently bought 2 different sets of what was labeled 100% cotton, but the fitted sheets both started forming pills after several washings. Top sheet and pillowcases seem fine, but I've never experienced this before and it made me think of an interview I heard with a guy who recently wrote a book about thrift stores. He said that these days, something labeled 100% cotton, may not necessarily be 100% cotton(!)

Oakley, Rough Linen sheets are made from European flax and manufactured in Marin County, CA. What made you think they were made in China?

Oh and I have used nothing but Rough Linen sheets for years-remember when we were all discussing them way back? I only iron the pillow slips. I do not use a top sheet with our duvet, but if we use one, I do iron the 18 inches or so that is turned back. I do not dry ours at all. They come out of the washer barely damp and I put them on the bed and smooth them. They dry looking as if I ironed them!

Linen is hypoallergenic and eco-friendly, too. They do soften and I can not imagine ever going back to cotton.

Cyn, when you put them on the bed, how long before you put the duvet on top?

bpath, I takes a while for them to dry. I am now using her fitted sheets (easier) and they seem to dry more quickly. I think they are not as thick as the flat sheets. With the flat sheets as a bottom sheet I usually had to wait three or four hours, but we keep our heat pretty low. If I am in a hurry, I close the doors to the bedroom and turn the heat up to 70. Then, it will only take an hour or so. I am retired, no kids at home, and no schedule to meet. I honestly love these sheets! I also use the towels in the summer, although I prefer terrycloth towels in the winter! It is astounding how absorbent the linen is.

ETA: If I am feeling lazy, I do not iron the pillow slips, but I do like the look of freshly ironed linen and I do not mind ironing at all.

Just thought I would share this in case anyone is still wondering about RL manufaturing in China (their flax and products are not). Also, a note that is apropos today especially, the company was founded by a woman and is 100% staffed by women. That is a win/win for me.

About Rough Linen

I wasn’t quite clear on what they were saying. European flax sounds like it comes from Europe (but not necessarily!). The sheets are manufactured in California. But, an in-between step is missing: where is the flax woven into the textile?

The website says most of the mills they work with are in Europe, but their sheeting is woven from Belgian flax in China. I think that is a change from when she first started out. Good catch, Oakley.

Linen is a bast fiber that mere ironing will do little more to than smooth. To get the real value of linen you have to use weight, heat being optional and that is what a mangle does. The actual fibers are flattened which creates the smooth gleaming surface. Ever time you wash you round up the fiber and have to start over. The quality of the flax makes a huge difference because it can be coarse to very fine and since these days no one that anyone here could afford uses the long line fiber but instead uses the cut roving for the spinning process it is going to get fuzzy. I like linen though.

A mangle? Haha. Sorry, don't have one handy, Patriciae! I have a heavy iron and it smooths my linen just fine. Never noticed any fuzziness on un-ironed sheets, napkins, or towels. I am happy with my sheets.

I think my first set of sheets are about 8 years old, washed many times (weekly until we got another set) and sometimes ironed -- and no fuzziness, but they do get smoother and softer.
