please review my kitchen design - not urgent but hope to hear
Comments (23)As requested earlier from Davidro who wanted to understand traffic flow, below is a whole house "sketch" which shows our first floor layout (upstairs is only a loft) and second diagram is where I'm at with regard to kitchen design after input from you guys and after Ikea consultant/designer who was at my home today gave as far as cabinets fitting. Also, from the earlier discussion, I had some confusion about whether I could relocate the washer/dryer to the hall. The contractor who visited today didn't have any problems with the relocation. It helps a lot that our foundation is "pier and beam". Moving plumbing around is a whole lot easier. New location of washer/dryer may be a bit claustrophobic in the hall way outside the bathroom but I only do laundry a couple times a week for short spurts. I'm in the kitchen a whole lot longer and since the relocation of washer/dryer is the only thing keeping me from having the kitchen layout I REALLY wanted from the beginning (barring the fact the pantry has gotten quite a bit smaller), I am a happy camper. I'm going to lie low a while and get our bathroom done and maybe a roof before I come back with any updates on the kitchen. And for anyone who is in doubt, the Ikea prices for all cabinets is half of what price was quoted for Innermost cabinets by Home Depot. And the Ikea quote includes several of the appliances though I'm not sure yet if that is how I will really go. But cabinets -yes - their prices are too good to pass up. The money we save can go for the bathroom we're getting that has a curbless shower, and several other expensive details which Ikea can't help us out on. I'll still be listening but hopefully everyone can see the aisles around the island are considerably wider (maybe even too wide with my feet problems). If I need more pantry space, I'm fairly sure that several of the drawers in the main part of the kitchen will not all be used so I can use them for pantry space spill over if there is any. THANKS AGAIN (though I will definitely be back - still need to pick out countertop/backsplash/flooring/hoodOverCooktop and make decisions about appliances..) And since I haven't marked it well, let me explain that there are upper cabinets on either side of the cooktop and also to the left of the fridge. No uppercabinets on the sides of the "cleanup sink" with the large 6 foot wide window. Think I may wait until kitchen is done and probably install some open floating shelves on either side of cleanup sink - more for esthetics than function but I think I can wait until the last minute for that. (Maybe even some art work...)...See Morebathroom design advice, pls - xpost
Comments (29)lol, rebunky! I never thought about running the tile over the edge of the counter like that. Definitely worth considering, thanks! Did I say on this thread or the one in the bathroom forum that I figured out that the tile will only be about 8 1/2" high. My elevation made it look much fatter than it will be. In fact, it's likely closer to what you did above. I met with my GC yesterday and my KD today. They were both very productive meetings so I'm feeling a whole lot better about this project. GC said, "yep, we can do the angled bench, no problem" which put the Kohler shower pan in the running. Yay! He also had great cost-saving ideas. Yay, yay! When I met with my KD today, I reviewed everything with her, especially my concerns about a tiled shower floor. She said, "do the Kohler and the angled bench" without missing a beat and we headed off to a local showroom to look at color chips. Found a winner in no time: Sandbar is perfect! It's a wonderful color with my other choices but there's enough contrast that it's a great compliment, too. I'm a happy girl! DH and I liked A and B the best of the tile patterns for the shower. GC said his favorite was B and that it would be a cheaper install. KD voted for B as well. So B it is! On the bathroom forum thread, mayflowers voiced concern that the mosaic tile reads too brown in my photos. My sample doesn't look brown but I stopped at a local showroom and asked about it. Oh, yeah, there's a lot of variation and I could get a batch that has a lot more brown than blue. Not good. I want blues not browns and especially not a golden brown since that would look awful with our other choices. So I stopped at a tile distributor to see what else I could find. I brought home 4 choices, 2 of which were discarded when I got them home in my light. One was neon bright in my light. Oops, not what I was going for. The other was wishy washy. But I have 2 very good choices to replace the glass mosaic. I may need to swap out Aquarius glazed option for another in that line for the 1/4 round but that's not a big deal. Choice #1 is Lunada Bay, Tozen series, in Iodine, in 2 finishes. Here it is in silk (non-glossy). And in natural (glossy) Tile choice #2 is also Lunada Bay but in the Agate series in Pisa, silk finish. These will also have some variation between batches but they won't end up brown. Not sure which I like better....See MoreNeed help in bathroom floor tile choices
Comments (29)Zaz and Beth, I finally have some samples on my floor to look at (from the Tile Shop) and that's helpful, but it's a pain in the b*** to figure out what samples to order and from whom to order them - and expensive too! I could probably order an equal number of interesting samples from Merola/Home Depot, not to mention the additional ideas you've both now given me, but at some point I need to stop. Even though I feel I've 'narrowed' my focus to something with blue and/or patterned-moroccan-style, there are still so many options and resources to look at. I do like all the additional examples you gave me, Beth. Is EliteTile considered a good quality resource? I have felt comfortable having a retail face to consult with (Tile Shop and Home Depot) but if you and Zaz and others with more experience feel it can be ok to order from a place like Wayfair and this brand of tile, then I feel more confident about that. Both Tile Shop and HD have nice options too, but I've been a bit frustrated that I haven't been able to see an actual sample of a large-size cobalt option .... and the nice on sale lantern blue one is beautiful. What a price, too!! Weirdly, as I look more closely at the Wayfair/EliteTile Moroccan tiles, I'm seeing several that are the exact same patterns that Merola/HomeDepot offer. Do either of you know anything about this? I'd kind of like to add pictures of the samples I have from Tile Shop to see what you both think, but it might need to wait until tomorrow since this day is over and I'm beat. (Also, have other things in addition to tile shopping which I'm sure you both can relate to.) I am grateful to have both of you to converse with on this. Feel more comfortable....See MorePlease Help, don't know what to do for my 1967 bathroom
Comments (20)Thanks for the additional pictures. Gotta say, I would have been thrilled to have this vintage bathroom in my house. Even the vanity and counter look to be in tip top shape. Bathrooms are one of the most expensive and disruptive rooms to remodel. Working with quality vintage elements can be such a huge time and money saver!!! (Btw, I love the skirted toilet. Not vintage, I know. :) Could you share the brand? It looks to be on the compact size which is what my bathroom needs.) The flooring is sheet vinyl? Usually easier upkeep than a tile floor. More comfortable underfoot too. The vintage pattern is subtle and the colours are harmonious with the dusty pink tile. If it's in good condition, I'd totally let the flooring and tile determine the colour palette: dusty pink, ivory and gold. The vanity looks to be in good shape as well. If its storage worked for me, I might consider changing its hardware if the current handles didn't feel comfortable in hand. (Hard to see in pictures but the shape of these door handles remind me of those thin vintage metal handles with edges that feel sharp in hand.) If they're comfortable though, I'd just see if a bit of polishing would work. I'd want a subtle gleam for the hardware. Three other elements I'd consider in this bathroom: 1) Lighting: Is it optimal? You might want to assess the quality of artificial lighting in the space (does it cast a yellow light on everything? Is it positioned to flatter?) and upgrade if budget allows. Decide on the lighting situation before painting the walls because you might want to install wall sconces. (Straight on light is more flattering and functional than overhead light. The lack of casted shadows is appreciated when shaving and doing makeup, for example. ) Btw, the current light fixture makes sense style-wise in this bathroom but you certainly could consider a different style direction if you wished. 2) Window dressing: I love the unparalleled light control and privacy blinds offer but these look at bit "heavy" and utilitarian in this room. Depending on privacy needs and budget, I would consider something softer. Maybe privacy film and soft curtains? Plenty of options. Depends on your style direction. 3) Storage: A recessed medicine cabinet is a treasure in my books. A hinged mirrored cabinet door could be made for this one. If you don't like the look of the wood vanity, you could probably paint it. Or even sand and stain it, depending on the quality of the wood. I'm tempted to search for pink and gold bathroom images but I'm rushed for time. Besides, by the time I hit submit on this comment, I'm sure 10 other comments will have been posted. I do ramble. :P...See MoreRelated Professionals
