Poll , When do you plant garlic?
Comments (71)I think depending on the year, garlic can probably be planted with good results even going well into december. Some of my later batches which were planted right around thanksgiving are already taking root very well now, and even as far north as upstate NY, it looks like the soil temperature will stay well in the 40s through most of december based on the LT forecast. In previous years, I've found that late planted garlic that doesn't even sprout will turn into rounds, and early planted garlic which gets up near 1ft tall doesn't get destroyed as long as there is a good layer of leaf mulch and snow always accompanies extreme cold temperatures. In any case, these cloves will have good established root system, and be stratified to form nice big bulbs the following year. Given that when I dig through the snow and the soil is not frozen underneath it even in the middle of January when there's a few feet of snow, I believe that root growth does occur. Every time I've planted garlic in the spring, I get much smaller bulbs so I think the only important thing is that they go through the natural cold stratification that is brought upon by winter. Comments (13)I'm keeping the drywall return. Adding inside molding is an option if I feel the frames look too wide for my taste on the interior. The window company I'm using that is within my price range only offers one color for both inside and outside. Justterrilynn, thank you for the photos. Your home and landscaping are really lovely. The roof looks dark so the bronze window frames complement it nicely. Those frames look fairly thin. Are they the aluminum with a thermal break? Who is the manufacturer? My plans are to go with fixed picture widows with no grids in the family room. This reduces the width of the frame, and I don't particularly care to look through grids from the interior to exterior. However, yours do look very nice, architecturally. As an aside, I wish our area required lamp posts. That's a great touch. Ak, thanks for another bronze vote. I hadn't thought of versatility but that's an important point. Almost all of my neighbors seem to be going with the white inside and out. These comments are really giving me the courage to move forward. I'm also trying to get myself psyched up for the dark green window glass that code requires here in Houston. The Low e3 366 lets in 60% visible light compared with my clear single pane glass. I'm also wondering how I will adjust to that....See MoreWhen you were looking at homes did the realtor drive you or you met up
Comments (26)When I bought my house, the realtor drove me around. But then again I met her through an organization we were both part of, even though we weren't especially friends. I was glad we drove around together because it enabled more frank conversation and spontaneous questions. (And some laughter after the House with The Indiana Jones stairway down into the basement, or after escaping the House with the Severely Bowed Roof, which we hadn't noticed until we had crossed through it and were out on the deck.) She was willing to show me the neighborhoods, too. When I hunted for the land I'm currently building on, the realtor just gave me the address and I went on my own - she never showed up at all. (I met her when I first signed up with her, and just once after. She hadn't indicated at our first meeting that she'd not actually be walking these properties with me.)...See MoreWhen people bring their fundraisers to work -- What do you do ?
Comments (40)Our official workplace asks us to donate to the united way we get the envelopes, this is as far as workplace fundraising should go. There is no negative response if you don't, no one knows if you did or didn't so there are not any judgments on your character either way. Fundraising by individuals does not belong in the work place. Anyone who brings in such fundraising junk into the lunchroom at work finds it moved off the kitchen table and shoved on top of the fridge or the shelf unit in the corner of the room. Expecting co workers to pony up for your kid is not ok. If you want to walk you kids all over your neighbor hood or hit up relations more power to you. But I suspect many don't want to make that effort when they can just dump it in the lunchroom and guilt there co workers who they see everyday to just give them the money. Our department collects money at least once or twice a month for showers, going away gifts secret Santa etc. There are also people requesting to be sponsored for this ride or walk as well. Those fundraising say if you don't want to donate you don't have to. But when you don't what they really mean is why can't you just give us money everyone else gave whats wrong with you. They speak negatively about those who do not want to participate. It doesn't matter that you may not have the money to share or you don't want to give to that charity or school, or you already give to you own favorite charity. I ignore their request regardless of how they feel and move what ever it is away from the table. And let it be know that the table is kept clear except when you are eating at it....See MoreToni Hamlett
