roasted tomatillo sauce at Trader Joes
Comments (1)You can't copy an commercial recipe for untested home canning safely, and the yellow chili could be several things if not identified on the label....yellow habanero, guero, even banana pepper depending on how hot your tastes might be. This is the approved tested Tomatillo Salsa recipe from Ball Blue book - you could substitute yellow for green and roast the pepper for flavor change before peeling as long as you don't change the final amount in the recipe - Tomatillo Salsa 5 1/2 C chopped, cored, husked tomatillos (about 2 #s) 1 C chopped onion 1 C chopped green chili peppers 4 clove minced garlic 2 tablespoons minced cilantro 2 teaspoons cumin 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon red pepper 1 C vinegar 1/4 C lime juice Combine all ingredients in large saucepot. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 10 min. Ladle hot salsa into hot jars, leaving 1/4" headspace. Adjust two piece caps. Process 15 min in boiling water bath. Yield: 2 pts...See MoreTrader Joes
Comments (15)I love Trader Joe's. For me, it's a bonus that they don't have butchers. It meets the majority of my food shopping needs as they have most staples and a wide variety of organic produce, at least in California. Most of the produce is good, but sometimes some of it is less than impressive compared to something like Whole Foods. But it's also significantly less expensive. They always have interesting new things to try, and a ton of vegetarian frozen convenience food that is still reasonably healthy. But beyond the food is their customer service. By far the most friendly and helpful staff. I was debating once over two different types of chocolates to buy as a gift, and an employee came over and asked if she could help. I explained my dilemma and asked if she had a preference and to my surprise, she opened both packages right there to let me try them. I asked what happens to the rest of it, as I would have felt bad if it gets trashed just to let me try it, and she said it goes into the back as an employee treat. I like how they unload the cart for you, and have a no questions asked return policy if you don't like something. They also have great prices on flowers. Our house is full of orchids. The only negative for me is that it's always so crowded in the evenings and weekends, so I have to choose when I go to avoid being annoyed!...See MoreHellebores from Trader Joes when to plant?
Comments (3)I would imagine that it depends on what it is like where you are now, and where you will be planting them. Like most plants grown inside, they will probably need to be acclimatized to the light levels outside by being put outside for an increasing amount of time each day, starting with just a short time in shade to prevent leaf burn. However, hellebores are fully hardy and are normally blooming around now in zone 6, so I wouldn't worry about planting them out as soon as they are hardened off and the ground isn't frozen. The ground here is still frozen in many spots, but that may not be an issue for you....See MoreWhat to include in a Trader Joe's Gift Bundle
Comments (56)Here's what works for crowds at my store: There are the early birds who are practically standing in line at 8 when they open. They are mostly finished and in the checkout lines by 8:20 or 8:30, so I try to get there at that time, as it picks up again after 9 a.m. It also is less crowded close to closing. I raced in one time about 10 min before closing and as I checked out and commented that I almost didn't make it before closing, the worker told me that if you're in the store at closing, they don't shoo you out. They are there stocking until later anyway, so they leave you in peace to finish up. At closing, they may be out of stuff on the shelves, tho, but often it's in the back waiting to be put on the shelves. They are GREAT about checking for you and bringing what you need out of the back, if it's there....See Moreannie1992
