Studying room usage
Comments (22)7 hours in the kitchen might be a little light, but we don't have an eat-in kitchen, and the only significant meal we prepare is dinner. Breakfast is pretty light (but healthy) and lunch is brown bagged. Since I usually eat left-overs for lunch, it literally takes me about 5 minutes to put lunch together. About 80% of our meals are on paper plates. Right now, we watch TV, and do much of our eating in a small bedroom we use as a den. Although it sounds bad, what difference does it make if I eat breakfast on the couch, or in a breakfast nook? In the interest of full disclosure, I have to add that I grill out every weekend, rain or shine, and we sometimes grill on a gas grille during the week. I guess I would have to add those hours to 'kitchen time', although it will probably be about the same in our new house. All that being said, we are both good cooks, and the kitchen will be large in relation to the rest of the house. Our current kitchen is a whopping 80 sq/ft; our new one will be nearly double that. One thing I'm putting in my plans is a dressing room, for want of a better term. Basically, it is a huge walk-in master closet, with room for the ironing board and maybe a dresser or two. I'm giving up some master bedroom size for it, but I think the net space in the BR will be greater by getting rid of the clutter. The dressing room will be app. 10X10, and feature a window, and good lighting. We're also committed to having 2 bathrooms, because we don't want to have to keep the master bath spotless at all times in case an unexpected guest needs to use it. Also, it lends more privacy when having overnight guests. Our property is way out in the country, so anyone who 'pops in' will probably stay a while. As for resale, well, a 1200 sq/ft house plunked in the middle of 7 acres is almost comically small by today's standards, anyway. We are on a very tight budget, and I plan to do much of the work on the house myself, possibly taking a year off to build the whole thing ( a life-long dream). So building a much larger house simply isn't an option. I'm sure we will be able to get our investment back out if we have to move unexpectedly (we could already make a nice profit on the land alone). It's great to have this discussion, and hear everyone's ideas and experiences!...See MoreShow me your teen boy rooms
Comments (43)I thought I was alone in the messy son bed-room wars. So glad to hear that they get more tidy with age. This post is perfect as we are redecorating from this gawd-awful G.I Joe theme to something new______ Right now my DS is thinking Skateboard, Snowboard, World Traveler, Basketball... so many ideas to think about. Here are some he has been looking at. I love this look. It will be a perfect guest room when he goes off to college one day. Comments (17)shellfish: Oh, lovely room. That is right up my alley as well! I'm so envious of your space! I like the idea of the white coverlet which I may add in winter below the duvet. DD and I are still looking through the samples though lean towards a more saturated color like boxerpup's DS's room, then a lighter shade for the ceiling. Hope to narrow it down to a few paint samples to test on the walls. DD has little patience with me as I wanted to show her the inspiration pics. I'd rather she just pick a look she likes and let me narrow down the paint colors to 2-3 that match the one in a picture. That has always been my difficulty in doing her room--she just focuses on one aspect, the bedding, WTs or paint and not how they all look together in her room, with her floor and lighting. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done in terms of room layout at present and it's not possible to remove just the head and footboard. It's a captain's storage bed with four drawers which she uses for her clothes. In another year my DS will most likely go away to college then I think I will let her move into his room which is a smidge larger and then we can do something similar to paintergirl's rendition. In which case I'll be repainting both rooms in a year's time. If it wasn't so hideous right now, I'd just wait another year, but she and I both hate it and the bedding and WTs can simply move to the other room when the time comes. I lvoe the paint color in the living room photo above and think DD would agree to that since it's so vivid. That B&W accents really seem to mitigate the intense shade as I'd hoped it would. Does anyone know what color that is?...See MoreIndoor/Outdoor Rug in Teen Room or FLOR squares?
Comments (12)I like the rug you picked out and think it would look great in a boy's bedroom, I don't think it says "outdoor rug" at all. (Did you see the "Organic Blocks" rug? I think that one's pretty sharp and very masculine.) Polypropylene is very practical because it's very difficult to stain and you can just haul it out on the deck or driveway and hose it down to clean, there's no fussing, and it's usually nice and soft underfoot. Most of the rugs I've had were polypro because of pets and my own clumsiness (I spill things a lot), it's only recently that I have had wool and that's primarily because I found a couple of wool rugs I liked very cheap at Home Decorators Collection outlet! We used carpet tiles in our previous house (DH was adamant about having carpet in the bedroom and with a middle-aged cat and a dog modular carpeting was the only thing I would consider!) and I found the FLOR tiles to be pretty hard and uncomfortable, like office carpet, and many of the styles were very scratchy even though they were described as soft in the catalog - make sure you get samples. I ended up choosing Milliken's carpet tiles which are more like conventional carpet in feel. Although they're not on the website, Lowes has a few FLOR styles, including some exclusives; I don't know if they're actually FLOR brand but Target has some similar carpet tiles at a pretty decent price. Another option is replacing the casters on the roll-out drawers and desk chair with soft rubber or polyurethane ones that do not damage wood floors. Check out Caster City, Gary's Upholstery Supply, CoolCasters, Rockler.com, just for starters....See MoreJudy Lam
