Small Addition, how small is bedroom too small?
Comments (19)NaviJen, pleased to see you posting with us. Mass. is a whole different style of housing than what I'm used to in Alabama. Like lower ceilings, big basements, storm windows, dormers, angled ceilings upstairs. And I've been surprised at the absence of air conditioning (a necessity built into every home in south Alabama), and the intrusive nature of many heating systems--including radiators, baseboard heaters, boilers and oil tanks! Those things take up a lot of space and money to operate also. As older folks who married almost four years ago (second spouses), my DH has a home up there, and I have one down here. That's why I sometimes do a flip-flop from north to south, you will notice. I've been redoing his house AND mine. Jen, be sure to hang in there with us, a lot of creative ideas come from this group of folks. And Steph, you are so unique, giving your boy his own bedroom!!! I'm thinking you need to get out more? hehehehe Having huge antique furniture can be a drawback in a smaller home. Of course, ONE PIECE could fit, maybe, if it is a featured piece. Something that WORKS FOR ITS KEEP. I do hope you have room for the things you've STORED FOR 14 YEARS?!! At least, put it in place and see if it leaves enough breathing room. After all this time, you may have fantasized it into something it can never be, and you've grown out of it....so to speak. Dreams are hard to give up. If I had a good spot to put it, I'd be looking for a nice armoire...just because I like those. But I realize it won't fit my house or my lifestyle any more....See MoreBedroom in Progress
Comments (44)My new to me headboard was damaged in shipping but the Etsy seller handled it like a real class act. But, in the interim, I ordered a replacement from another Etsy seller and I am holding my breath that the new new one will arrive in "normal vintage, with some wear" condition :-) But, here's some progress shots (and a bonus of my "ladies office" that I carved out at the top of the stair landing) As wide a shot as one can get in a tiny room (less than 10x10 with a wall of windows that get the morning light) That's the PBteen Qunicy scallop bedding. I also have a trellis and a floral pattern. The duvet is really there to keep my dog from getting all his dog business on my white Peacock Alley coverlet and to add a little contrast. I am waiting to see what I feel like I need above the bed after the headboard is the same Easton Green Amy Howard lacquer. Of course the current headboard blends right into the SW Naval wall. Here's a tight shot of the bedding: My dresser, which is in the "breezeway" between the bedroom pod and the sitting room trapped behind it: I still need to change the lampshade and properly accessorize it. I have a mirror coming. My bird's nest fern is just there because there's no table in the sitting room and I don't want to forget to water it. And a bonus shot of the office area: It's a CB2 peek-a-boo acrylic console with a vintage Chinese Chippendale chair (with an IKEA sheepskin on it). It is small but it is mighty this office of mine. I love it. There's a great window to the left that overlooks my neighbor's pretty Rose of Sharon tree (but I can't see into his yard). The desk area still needs some accessorizing, hence the tight shot, but so far, I am so very happy with this house. The accent walls really energize me and I love all the color after years of being a slave to neutrals. The wall color is SW Begonia....See MoreSmall cottage bedroom storage project
Comments (20)Sorry to hear about your sister. This must be very stressful for you all. Thanks for posting more photos of your beautiful home. If you have the depth in your room, you could also hide the closet behind the bed as a room divider. Not sure if this is an option for you but would help keep the main bedroom clear albeit tiny. I love your branch btw. If you were really wedded to the branch maybe you could do floor to ceiling track curtains around the closet area. Finally, an offbeat idea that likely doesn't make sense for you but could possibly give you more storage - could the adults take over the entire basement with kids in the 2 bedrooms upstairs?...See MoreNeed help growing a Boston fern in a bedroom environment
Comments (12)woodnative - "You could try growing it on a large tray of wet stones and pebbles (so there is always water evaporating around the plant yet the bottom of the pot is raised up out of the water)" - I have tried this previously with my peace lilies and it didn't quite work out for me. Marcy - I've researched the Macho Fern and I agree that might be the better choice for indoors since I'm not able to amp up the humidity and finding it difficult to set up 6500k lights over it. (personally not a fan of white LED lights in bedrooms) Since the last post I had a 1.2W LED Desk Lamp set up to be right over the Boston fern, and found it to make no difference (i didn't mist or water as wooden skewer is still wet) --> stems are just bending over and more leaves turning brown, shrivelling and falling. So I've read some people had great success with BF by placing them in NW areas of their homes outdoors. So I've now done that (the picture below shows the NW shade side from my house)... Would this location be okay? Also I feel I need to give the BF some moisturiser (fertilising, misting, watering) but not sure on how to go about? It was freshly watered on Monday (the day I brought it from the nursery) and today (Friday) the wooden skewer still comes out with bits of the mix stuck onto it, so not sure if watering might hurt it more? I read some people water theirs "twice a week from the top until the water runs out from the bottom of the plastic pot, and on Sunday they fill a big plastic tote with water and a small amount of miracle grow and let the ferns sit in the water for 5-10 min." Anyone else do something similar or suggest something else?...See MoreElizabeth Benton
