I like the white subway tiles and dark grout. I’m thinking of the dark paint on the bottom and white on the top, like this. If I had a big open kitchen I’d do all the cabinets dark, but, alas, I don’t.

Can someone tell me how to copy a picture from houzz here?

You are going to have to take your paint colors in with you and your subway tile too, to look at countertops. Are you asking if everything goes together OK? We can’t tell without pictures.

That is going to be WAY too busy. Dark blue cabinets and marscapone cabinets could work, but marscapone is a yellowish white. Nether color goes with your bright white and gray granite countertop samples. And white tiles can make your cabinet color look dingy, while the gray grout is too much contrast in a small space with so many other colors. Paint all the cabinets marscapone, then find a countertop with warm tones that your like. If you use a granite with lots of pattern, use a warm white subway tile with matching grout for the back splash. If you want more color in the space, use a solid warm white quartz that matches the cabinets, and use a blue subway tile that matches your blue wall. Less is more in the kitchen, because as you said, you'll have color in small appliances as well. Your example kitchen has a much more neutral blue than your wall color, neutral white cabinets with matching subway tiles, and a solid countertop. It is also a very open space.

Thanks. The counter is confounding me. I don't really love the almost solid counter looks. They seem to sleek for me (I like them in other people's houses - but they usually have a completely modern look which is, simply, not me. I am tempted to do a deep blue subway tile too... but I love the classic white. Would that work with a more classic white cabinet instead of the mascarpone?

If you are committed to the blue paint on the cabinets then go ahead & paint a door. Take it & the upper door to the stone yard & see what looks good. Don't rule out granite. Start there, take pictures & come back here for feedback.

If you're unsure about the cabinet color to use, look at countertops first. Choose what you love for the countertop. Then decide what you are doing on your floors, so the flooring coordinates with other flooring nearby and the countertop material. After that, it will be much easier to choose a paint color for the cabinets that works with both. After the cabinet decision, when all your other choices are made, you can find a back splash tile.

@calidesign, good idea. I'll have to start with the counter top. We've just decided to do the floors in wood - whether that be what is under the current tile (can't tell yet) or putting down new wood flooring.

@mark_rachel, I do like the granite. It seems like the best choice for the money. Marble will get destroyed in our house. And you're right. I just may have to be more flexible with my cabinet colors... I originally wanted to do all white or all blueish grey, but my husband would paint the whole house in mardi gras colors is if he could.

The contractor says he needs to have the countertop done first so he can work the backsplash from there. The painting will be done after everything else. So I guess I have time for that decision.

Thanks, all... this is really helpful to me. I can see things and say 'I like that' or 'I'd do that a bit differently' but it's difficult for me to envision a total transformation.

I'm not crazy about the middle blue. I like the darker blue in top photo. I love the top photo design.

I love the open shelving in the bottom photo too.

I really actually agree about the lighter blue. I'm planning the open shelving on the wall where the window is... backsplash to the ceiling with the open shelves over it. Spices and dry foods in glass jars will live there. I'm increasing my supply of Bon Marie jams for the touch of red of the lids. :-)

Love the darker blue too. Flexibility is key; you need to start with some sort of idea, but if you find a countertop, tile or color you love, don’t be afraid to change your mind about other things so it all works together. I make 2 ideabooks; one with the project title, and one called project finals. The project title idea book gets pretty big, but as I make purchases or commit to certain products or colors, I move them into the finals book. I also put my favorites in there. It helps you see how everything works together. If I am having a hard time making up my mind between two or three items, I put them all in there and keep going back and looking at it until I can make a choice.

That’s a great recommendation! And I’m realizing from this conversation that I am having to embrace flexibility! Not my strongest suit.

So...construction started a week before all non-essential businesses were shut down here in NY. ( worries about those guys. I can’t imagine that they are getting paid!)
So everything is torn out... anyway, even with recessed lighting, Sheetrock and plywood (slightly put-back together) the kitchen looks better.
We’ve settled on a white and grey veined Quartzite counter, subway tile backsplash with a darkish grout (we’ll see how dark when the counter is in) and a grey(blue-ish) color for the bottom cabinets and white for the top.
So here’s my question. One part of our counter is a lovely wood. We’ve decided to do wood flooring, but I’m not sure if what we’ve selected matches the counter.
Awkwardly, I have a picture but the colors are off. I can’t make them accurate. The counter looks much lighter than it is, and the flooring looks much pinker than it is. So try to imagine them less difference.
Can this work?

Choose the flooring you want first, since that is a much larger area, and needs to coordinate with adjoining floors. The wood countertop can be stained to match, or darker if preferred.
