Tile people..am I being too picky
Comments (10)Needsleep, What I find is that it is easy to worry too much ... sometimes I suffer from the same malady, only to learn that things work out pretty well in the end. What seems like a BIG offender today, lessens greatly in importance next month, like never remembering that chip was there on that tile in the doorway once it was grouted. I kept thinking as I was reading everyone's posts, that I would rather a small chip covered by grout rather than risk someone removing a chipped tile and nicking my heated floor mats in the process. THAT would be a much bigger problem because my brand spankin' new heated floors would not work! It's a kind of 'pick your battles' kind of thing. I think that we are all somewhat guilty of wanting to be 'nice' and not get in the workmen's way. What I try to do is avail myself of the information regarding the task at hand, and in my sweetest voice would have said, "Now, Tile Guy, are you planning to center the tile over the front of the surround, because it would make me REALLY happy if everything were nice and centered, right here in the front? Then bat your eyelashes. Works almost every time. But you gotta know your stuff, so that you can catch them BEFORE they 'booger' things up. :)) 'Would you do?' requests are a lot easier to grant that 'Would you RE-DO?' ones. Comments (23)Thanks so much everyone. You've been very helpful...I will certainly insist on having the backsplash redone. @sophie123: Yes we bought/paid for the tile from a separate source with which the GC has a preferred relationship/discount. Maybe they'll furnish more tile at wholesale, since they get a lot of business through him. We've otherwise been happy with this GC and I really hate to see this happen all around (times are tough and this is a big hit to his bottom line). @renorman: Your installer followed the enclosed directions. Mine did not: they left the tile overnight before the paper was pulled off. So it was too late to do any adjusting. I did check your thread: WOW that is one beautiful kitchen and yes, the bump does really stand out. I did see that you're supposed to take a 2x4 or similar item and push on the tiles to even them up depth-wise. Wonder if he did that....See MoreAm I being too picky?
Comments (33)I am glad to see that they made it right for you! I was at One Green World this weekend for there fig sale and ended up picking up a yuzu while I was there (in addition to 13 figs ;P) and I was talking with the owner about how this had been a hard year for citrus and they said that there's only a handful of growers and that they are having issues with their trees this year for various unnamed reasons so that's why stock is so low/lesser quality across the board this year. Though to be fair OGW's trees looked pretty amazing, all had healthy looking leaves and most had fruit even the kaffir limes! They started using a neem product on their trees this summer and I didn't see any scale. I was so pleased by this current visit that I will certain be back if they get an citrus varieties that I want in stock. As well as when I am on to the next obsession (pawpaw's once we move)....See MoreAm I being too picky on how the paint looks?
Comments (27)Marisha- 1) Do you know if the wall was separately primed, before or after texture was spayed on? 2) Was just 1 finish coat applied? I can pretty much guess the answers, but there's always variables! Listen to PG22 here. He's been here a long time, & I've come to respect his answers. He's not your typical applicator, I've learned! In my house, I use a hybrid technique. My walls are flawless. I've used some very high-end paints, & some "medium" grade ones. Somewhere in this forum, I described my hybrid technique....tho' it may be a few years ago now! I've been in many new construction homes, and often shake my head at some of the paint jobs. I do realize tho', that the painting stage is often where the least $$$ are allocated. Lotsa people can paint. SOME are good at it..... Faron...See Morenickel_kg
