ABC News suspends Emmy-winning correspondent after Project Veritas sting

BY JOE CONCHA - 02/26/20 10:11 AM EST

ABC News has suspended veteran correspondent David Wright late Tuesday after the conservative group Project Veritas released a recording that showed him saying the network doesn’t care about newsworthy stories, according to a report by The Washington Post.

Wright, 56, reports for ABC’s “World News Tonight,” “Good Morning America," “Nightline" and "20/20." His reports from hotspots in Iraq and Darfur in 2003 and 2004, respectively, earned him Emmy awards.

An ABC News spokesperson told The Hill on Wednesday that Wright will be reassigned "to avoid any possible appearance of bias" upon his return, the timing of which is unknown.

"Any action that damages our reputation for fairness and impartiality or gives the appearance of compromising it harms ABC News and the individuals involved," the spokesperson said in a statement. "David Wright has been suspended, and to avoid any possible appearance of bias, he will be reassigned away from political coverage when he returns.”

Project Veritas, which routinely releases undercover videos meant to embarrass members of the media, politicians or liberal groups, released a recording of Wright criticizing his network. Its videos have been criticized for being selectively edited.

At one point in the video, Wright said ABC News is not "terribly interested in voters" when it comes to covering the 2020 presidential election. He mentioned former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), three Democratic presidential candidates.

“I don’t think we’re terribly interested in voters. We need the story to move on, and so we’re happy to have Buttigieg be the story last week, and we’re happy to have Klobuchar as a new subject this week, and then when we’re tired of her, we’ll be delighted if Elizabeth Warren kicks ass in Nevada because then we have something new to talk about,” Wright said.

He also said that ABC's "bosses don’t see an upside in doing the job we’re supposed to do, which is to speak truth to power and hold people accountable.”

The ABC suspension of Wright comes just months after a video released by Project Veritas in November showed “Good Morning America” anchor Amy Robach caught on a hot mic criticizing her network for not running her reporting on Jeffrey Epstein three years ago.

ABC News in a statement at the time said it had continued to work on the Epstein story.

Robach apologized for the comments and was not suspended.

"Shows you what happens on the Left if you speak truth to power."

That corporate America, and it's all about the money, not necessarily the truth. I guess you assume all Media companies are overrun by " leftists"? Lol.

Above headline on op article, it was a scam

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/02/26/abc-news-should-be-ashamed-caving-latest-james-okeefe-scam/

How are news organizations not wise to this scam?

That’s the reaction I had when I heard that ABC News had suspended reporter David Wright after Wright got secretly recorded by Project Veritas, the group run by conservative con artist James O’Keefe. Their goal is to “expose” media they see as biased and liberals they don’t like, which they usually do by recording people without their knowledge, then deceptively editing their comments and releasing them as an “exposé.”

I’ll explain a bit about that history and how it relates to what just happened, but here’s the latest:

The network disciplined David Wright, who reports for ABC’s signature news programs, including “World News Tonight,” “Good Morning America” and “Nightline,” several people confirmed late Tuesday.

The choppy, poorly shot video, released Wednesday morning by Project Veritas, captured Wright on what appeared to be a hidden camera, seeming to complain in general terms about political coverage.

“I don’t think we’re terribly interested in voters,” he said, echoing gripes about the superficiality of some aspects of White House and campaign coverage that have been raised by journalists for decades. Also: “Commercial imperative is incompatible with news.”

Given all that, it is utterly shocking that ABC News would hear that Project Veritas has released a secret recording of one of ABC’s most senior reporters, then suspend him that very day, for comments that shouldn’t be controversial at all. Not only is it a monumental act of cowardice, it only encourages con artists such as O’Keefe, showing them that it takes almost nothing for them to make one of the largest news organizations in the country knuckle under.

This isn’t about whether the media should take criticism seriously; of course they should. There are times when conservatives have legitimate complaints about the way one issue or another is covered, just as there are times when liberals have legitimate complaints. It should be part of our job to listen, be self-aware and be thoughtful about how to improve.

But that’s the opposite of what happened here. ABC News executives decided to punish one of their top reporters for nothing, for no reason other than naked fear. They should be ashamed of themselves.

In the headline, what has "admitted socialist" got to do with anything?

Aside from the fact that I don't think one "admits" to socialism any more than one "admits" to capitalism or "admits" to enjoying tennis. There needs to be some potential disapproval -- objectively speaking -- implied in being or doing whatever it is. For example, one "admits" to a crime.

The story sounds like a fairly run of the mill experience in any media organisation that has to fund itself and make profit for its shareholders -- the reporters are often frustrated by the priority given to the bottom line. In this case, ABC appears to want a "gosh" factor in every day's stories and thus those that merely advance public knowledge by providing news may well get spiked quite often. It's not the political slant that does it, it's the profit imperative.

Given our past experiences with Project Veritas --the right-wing organization of James O'Keefe dedicated to "exposing" liberals/leftists by doctoring secret recordings of their remarks-- remember the ACORN scandal or the Planned Parenthood "exposure"? (two of the more prominent examples)--there is no reason to ever believe anything O'Keefe/Project Veritas produces or claims.

O'Keefe's Project Veritas work has been repeatedly exposed as false and misleading and based on tapes edited in such a way that the person being secretly recorded seems to be saying something blameworthy when that is not what that person actually was trying to communicate--if the full context of the tape is reviewed.

Don't believe James O'Keefe or Project Veritas. Ever.

I too was going to ask what socialism had to do with anything but Rina beat me to it.

And of course who believes anything they do like Kate said.

Wright may consider himself a socialist, but that has nothing to do with why ABC suspended him. He supposedly said ABC "doesn’t care about newsworthy stories," but simply about what is "new" and sells today. Nothing political about that.

I note that the OP says David Wright has won several Emmy awards for his reporting in Iraq and Darfur. Shame on ABC for suspending their prize-winning reporter, all in the name of profits!

And double-shame on James O'Keefe's Project Veritas for implying that it was Wright's politics biasing his news reports that caused his suspension. Once again, Project Veritas twists the truth in an attempt to destroy its political opponents.

Since when has "socialist" become a dirty word? The right-wingers used to use "liberal" as their favorite dirty word when it came to mudslinging, but they seem to have largely forgotten that favorite insult--substituting"socialist" instead. Now when they want to discredit anyone, they haul out "socialist"--the word of the day!
