Trump has no clue what to do in a disaster

EXCERPT

Meanwhile, Rush Limbaugh, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Trump, promulgates a ludicrous conspiracy theory that the virus is a “weaponized” cold meant to bring down Trump. It is all about covering for Trump and blame-casting, the public good be damned.

And Trump's administration says go shopping and buy stocks.

Then, to calm fears on Wall Street, the chairman of the president's economic council, Larry Kudlow, appeared on CNBC and downplayed its impact in the United States.

"We have contained this -- we have contained this. I wouldn't say airtight, but pretty close to airtight," he said.

And Kudlow again counseled long-term investors to buy the dips in the stock market.

Moments after Kudlow's interview, the Centers for Disease Control reiterated the World Health Organization's warning that coronavirus could become a pandemic and will inevitably spread in the United States.

While the message from the White House was to buy stocks, health officials advised that businesses, schools and households prepare.

Will be interesting to see what Trump's focus is this evening. Downplaying, blaming or honestly informing the American people about the state of readiness and seriousness of the situation.

I'm betting blaming will be a significant piece of it.

ETA However much money is allocated I hope the allocation makes it iron clad where the money goes or it will likely go to build a wall to stop a virus.

All I know, is when I heard on the news this morning that the cheeto-in-charge said everything was fine, going against what the CDC said, visions of the Chinese whistleblower dying over this flashed in my head. I thought, hm, how very say that you want the world to think it's fine. That is so unrealistic, cover cover cover it up! Fat lot of good it did for the doctor trying to help out. It spread because of their cover up. We're going to have the same issues.

Fake news.

Nowhere has Limbaugh said anything about weaponizing the virus itself, and no one will be able to produce evidence that he has.

What he is telling his listeners is that the situation is being hyped in an effort to maximize public fear, and to do so ASAP.

Democrats and the MSM (but I repeat myself) would have a much easier time running against Trump in a weakened economy. And that's what they're aiming for.

No one who was paying attention can forget that Dems had no problem with allowing people to enter the US from countries where the much nastier Ebola Virus was rampant. They called efforts to keep such travelers out of the US a "Muslim" ban, rather than a well founded fear of allowing the virus to spread across the US.

A "weaponized" cold is not an accurate description of Covid-19 considering the threat that the virus poses to the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. A number of the virus deaths in Italy involve patients being treated for cancer.

One would think that Limbaugh would have more awareness of the dangers given his current health problems.

Next will be the appointment of Rush Limbaugh as CDC Czar. Rush satisfies the only requirements for the job--undying loyalty to Trump and the willingness to accuse the media's coverage of the coronavirus outbreak as a conspiracy against Trump. Way to focus, Rush. Forget about those people who are sick and concentrate on how this effects Trump.

There is zero doubt that Democrats and their MSDNC apparatus are weaponizing the coronavirus to create fear, doubt and even panic, in their craven efforts to regain the WH.

They are preying on peoples' fears with impunity. They are purposefully attempting to plunder the markets with their rhetoric.

Nancy Pelosi pushed the same theme — what we really need to worry about it unrelated proposed budget cuts to CDC:

Pelosi on coronavirus: I have confidence in Dr. Fauci at the National Institutes of Health, who has even further confidence in what we’re doing. I do have concern that the President’s budget cut nineteen percent of the Center for Disease Control…We’ll fight that cut.

Chuck Schumer blamed Trump for not having enough of a plan:

This is typical of President Trump's senseless budget cuts.

For those who get their news from the Communist News Network, Limbaugh said the opposite.

Rush explained extensively today on his radio show that it's the MSDNC apparatchik and the Democrats doing all the politicizing.
He used this example: There are 58 cases now in the U.S. That's it! And, no one has died. Yet, San Francisco is politicizing this as a huge dangerous event and yet has no one in SF's boarders infected with this virus.

So, Coronavirus to Democrats is the new Russia, the new Ukraine, the new Stormy etc. It's the new crisis to destabilize our economy and undermine the President.

Trump has been diligent, informed , reasoned and responsible during this "crisis". The same cannot be said of the Democrats and their craven leadership.

Not one Democrat has said we should be panicking. We say we need to be prepared. The CDC did say it is a matter of when, not if, it will hit US. Since there is no vaccine it is likely not many will be immune so it could hit harder. The beef is the Trump admin has cut the CDC over the years to the point our hospitals and infrastructure aren’t prepared to handle a pandemic.

Colds and flu are illnesses caused by viruses.

What sort of virus and how spreadable and by what methods is another thing.

The novel corona virus causing the current medical concerns IS known. Here's another link to government information. We are still in the process of learning about how it is spread and how contagious it is.

San Francisco is politicizing this as a huge dangerous event and yet has no one in SF's boarders infected with this virus.

The above statement is a *gross misrepresentation* of what San Francisco Mayor London Breed has announced to the public.

Anyone with even a casual knowledge of San Francisco would know why the coronavirus presents a unique challenge to San Francisco, and to other cities on the West Coast, including Los Angeles. (Although the Chinese and Asian areas of greater Los Angeles do not have the high density housing that SF does -- we have more land available.)

*

https://abc7news.com/5967460/

From the article:

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco Mayor London Breed declared a local state of emergency due to the coronavirus Tuesday afternoon.

There are no confirmed cases of the virus in San Francisco, she assured the community during her press conference, so she explained the reason for the emergency declaration.

"By declaring a state of emergency we are prioritizing the safety of our communities by being prepared," Mayor Breed said. "Our number one goal is the health and safety of all our residents."

She says not only does the declaration kickstart the mobilizing of city resources, streamlining staff, and coordinating agencies across the city, but it allows for future reimbursements from the state and federal governments.

Dr. Colfax [Director of the Department of Health] also spoke at the press conference, saying in part, "Given the high volume of travel between San Francisco and mainland China and the spread of the virus to other countries, there is a growing likelihood that we will see cases in San Francisco."

He told the crowd the health department is "already working with the community and elected officials to "mitigate the harm of the new virus if it emerges in San Francisco."

"We are looking at a global outbreak that has entered a new phase," Dr. Colfax said.

Both Breed and Dr. Colfax discussed the impact of the deadly virus on San Francisco's Chinese community.

Many are living with fear for the health of their families overseas, and now, Dr. Colfax says, a new form of discrimination.

They are experiencing "a stigma and discrimination," he said. "This virus is not about race, ethnicity or culture. The risk of getting coronavirus is based on travel history and contact with people who are sick."

Mayor Breed encouraged the public to keep visiting Chinatown.

TODAY that it's too late!

Given what is happening in Italy, Ms. Pelosi is correct.

The search continues for Patient Zero in Lombardia; Patient One, Mattia X, had contact with someone who had returned from China on Jan 21. The Italian became sick Feb 21-22, and is now in grave condition.

Quarantine times may be too short as incubation times might be much longer than first suspected.

Edited to add: Mattia was not tested for coronavirus when he entered the Codogno ER; at that time only travelers returning from China were being detained and tested for the virus. That was not the case with Mattia.

Who is to say that we don't have a Mattia or two or three in the US?

Italy followed the same protocols that Western Europe did. Now 50,000 persons are under quarantine south of Milano.

Interestingly, a dr from the CDC said just before Trump came out that this will be an epidemic in the US. An advisor to WHO DG, Dr Ezekiel Emanuel, is saying that “Trump revealed his ignorance of the situation. That we don’t know how similar or dissimilar this is to the flu. We do know it is more communicable than the flu. Trump minimized it, saying it will likely be gone in two months when the truth is we don’t know. We won’t have a vaccine for at least 12 mos. Trump did not address the supply of masks for doctors (doesn’t help the average person to wear a mask) nor the supply chain of drugs needed, both coming from China.”

WHAT’S WORSE, THE CORONAVIRUS OR INFLUENZA?

There are many ways to estimate the risk posed by a disease, but let’s focus on two numbers often used by public health researchers: the reproduction number and the case-fatality ratio.

The reproduction number—R0 or “r naught”—simply refers to the number of additional people that an infected person typically makes sick. Maia Majumder, a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard University, has been tracking exactly that.

Her preliminary results indicate a transmissibility rate for the new coronavirus ranging from 2.0 to 3.1 people. That’s higher than influenza—1.3 to 1.8—but similar to SARS, which has a basic reproduction number in the 2 to 4 range. So, coronaviruses are slightly more prone to spreading between people.

The case-fatality ratio—or death-to-case ratio—is the number of people killed by disease divided by the number of people who catch it. Seasonal influenza, despite being considered a global scourge, technically kills a relatively small proportion of its cases, with a case-fatality ratio around 0.1 percent. The reason the flu is an annual public health emergency is because it infects boatloads of people—35.5 million in the U.S. across 2018 and 2019, which led to 490,000 hospitalizations and 34,200 deaths. That’s why health officials perpetually recommend that people receive a flu shot.

The case-fatality ratio also helps explain why public health agencies send up alerts over emerging outbreaks of coronaviruses. SARS had a case-fatality rate of 10 percent, about 100 times higher than influenza, and the rate for the new coronavirus is currently near 3 percent, which is on par with the 1918 Spanish influenza pandemic.

If SARS or the Wuhan coronavirus ever reached millions of people, it could be devastating. Unlike with influenza, Landon says, the entire human population is susceptible to this coronavirus because no one has ever had it before—and there is no specific treatment like a vaccine.

Health officials and the public are dependent on infection control, such as washing hands, reducing contact with afflicted individuals and quarantines. Monto suggests that these public health measures could make a difference in turning the tide against this coronavirus as they did with SARS.

“That’s the hope here, that it can be controlled by standard public health measures—because that’s what we’ve got,” he says. “With flu we have vaccines, a couple antivirals. We don’t have those for this coronavirus.”

Unfortunately, we may soon get to find out how well trump has prepared the nation:

A new case of novel coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern California, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday, adding the case is not tied to the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

The CDC did not specify where exactly in Northern California the case was located. More information was expected to be released Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

This new case of coronavirus is the first of unknown origin in the United States, according to a report in the Washington Post, citing a person briefed on the case. The Post report also said officials have started tracing where the resident has been to see how they may have been infected and who may have been exposed to the virus. Source NBC News Bay Area

It isn't complicated. Why be on the fence about it? People are more likely to go for testing if there is no payment up front. Flu shots are free because that encourages more people to get them. The US will probably make testing for the virus easy to access and free, perhaps opening centers in every area. That's healthcare.

Double-edged sword. If symptomatic people go out in public to the public clinic, exposing the general public to the disease...

So do the universal-type systems have a system in place for people to stay home and call in their symptoms, thus not exposing more people, or...?

Elvis -- I don't know what's ahead. I don't know what instructions either country will give. I've heard that in Canada hospitals are preparing strategies -- Toronto has already recently dealt with a terrible SARS epidemic that was just as threatening as this one. I still l think that it goes without saying that if there is a cost involved, cooperation with a program will be compromised.

“So do the universal-type systems have a system in place for people to stay home and call in their symptoms, thus not exposing more people, or...?”

Yes. I dial 811 and in a few minutes I am talking to a registered nurse who can advise me on treatment, recommend that I stay home or go to my doc soon or go to my doc today or go to the ER immediately. S/he can call an ambulance and have it sent to my house without me ever dialling 911.

Given the slightly different onset of symptoms between the standard “flu” and coronavirus the person I heard interviewed believes that a nurse could diagnose over the phone with a fairly good degree of certainty; of course there isn’t enough data to *know* that to be the case and we won’t really know unless/until there are more cases of coronavirus identified that way.

Thanks, lindsey. So, IOW, depending on the nurse's judgment over the phone, you may be advised to go out in public to seek diagnosis/treatment. If you do have something contagious, this is decidedly unwise.

Right?

“So, IOW, depending on the nurse's judgment over the phone, you may be advised to go out in public to seek diagnosis/treatment.”

Possibly. I don’t think anyone is pretending that it is a perfect system, and it is not a system that was designed for maximum efficiency in a pandemic but rather day-to-day health needs.

Still, I would imagine if there was any doubt the nurse would advise taking precautions such as phoning ahead to the hospital, wearing a mask, etc just as we’ve all been advised to do in general if we suspect that we are infected OR s/he could dispatch an ambulance to lessen the public’s exposure. All nurses everywhere are trained to proceed out of an abundance of caution.

I can imagine a scenario in which the system is amended so a nurse could send a specific coronavirus team to a person’s home to perform the test assuming they don’t need urgent medical care, if a true outbreak erupts.

A solid system that can be tweaked to improve efficacy is surely better than no system at all, right?

As mentioned Canada was hit really hard by SARS , especially Toronto. After the dust settled there was a task force formed to establish very specific protocols for the next pandemic. I am fully confident Ontario is ready for an outbreak.

The nurse practitioners who answer 811 are specifically trained to do over the phone screening, dianosis, treatment recommendations and next steps. My daughter has used them several times with my grandson and has been very pleased.

My understanding is that if the nurse practitioner suspects a case of Coronavirus they have very specific protocols on how to handle depending on your location. In urban areas the patient is directed to a specific hospital, the hospital is advised of the incoming patient and upon arrival they are immediately isolated prior to testing.
