March 09 - What have you fed your compost pile today?
Comments (56)This past weekend was all about using the compost, not adding to it. Last year's batch has now been spread on the new garden. Of course, this means that there's space in the bins again (living in the city, I use garbage can composters), so it will soon be time to refill them again. The new plan includes: shaken-out sod removed from the new garden bed, Winter kitchen scraps that have been stockpiled outdoors in lidded buckets, a bag full of random yard waste from a very late-season yard cleanup, some old leaves from a friend (we don't really get leaves in our fenced city yard), and possibly some rabbit and/or chicken manure, since I recently found sources for both. I'm hoping that for once, I'll have enough one-time additions to actually produce some significant heat. Anything's possible, right? :-)...See Moreyucky tomatoes and canning
Comments (7)I have seen a few volunteers especailly near my compost pile. They never reach maturity and so I just let them sit and die. This year in late March, I started, what I thought were some small grape tomatoes as they don't split like cherry ones do. I had only 5 plants total. One or two were cherry toms and they are mostly on the ground now, all split and rotting. The grape tomatoes were a bit better and most has no splits. Neither seeds were actually what I wanted. The grape tomatoes were more like tiny plum tomates and they had tougher skins with more liquid inside, and not very sweet. One issue for poor tomatoes is they do need good soil every year, with plenty of potash. You should never plant tomatoes in the same location every year as they 'drain the soil' or necessary nutrients as well as introduce bacteria and blights. This year, I had no blight as I planted mine in an area where there were no tomtoes planted there for over 6 years. Didn't have any blight at all and the plants still look very healthy even though we are in the 40's at night now. These are only for eating and salads, but I did chop up a few for some fresh veggies in my canned salsa, as well as added some to a batch of Tabuli with Feta cheese and pita bread. Also added a chopped purple onion to it....See MoreUPDATE: make new friends 'extreme makeover' turkey edition #3
Comments (150)Awwww, Klick, I am soooo glad you liked your box of pampering goodies! That file sponge is the kind that is for calluses on the feet. I picked one up for me and started using it and it works wonders! I have nearly gotten rid of all my rough patches from barefootin' this summer! LOL! Should have gotten one ages ago. My feet don't ache so much now! I may have worn it out already! I knew those cookies wouldn't last long! LOL! Whew! Glad I figured out how to pamper! Happy Bathing! I know how bad you want to take a good soaker! Had surgery on my wrist a few years ago and couldn't do the full shower thing for a while! That first one was a good long one after all the sponge washing! Phfltbtt! Back at you bunny! I seriously worried that I would blow it! I never do any of this stuff for me and haven't the faintest clue as how to go about it except for taking a break and talking to you guys! April, I am so sorry that she has Mono. I had it when I was 15. No, not from boys! Sharing drinks in highschool is what did it to me. All girl's highschool. My throat was totally miserable. I couldn't eat or drink anything. The doctor recommended Chloraseptic spray and it numbed my throat really well. I was finally able to have smoothies and slimfast after that. Becki, I meant to take my camera with me today! I keep forgetting to do that. I still have some desserts left so maybe I will put a little plate together tomorrow and snap a shot of it. The raspberry marble cheesecake was so yummy! The ginger cookies were a huge hit! The fruit platter looked really nice. The other stuff was pretty basic: brownies, chocolate chip cookies and plain cheesecake. We did 2 non-alcoholic punches, coffee and tea. The table looked really nice and the group was very happy with everything. All in all a good day. Got another booking yesterday for December 21st. This will be a company holiday luncheon. So things are going well. I am glad to hear that Lilly is feeling better! I think you are right about it being a virus. Fevers don't usually accompany bad food and the vomiting usually happens within 45 minutes or so of ingesting bad food. Trust me, I gave Ted bad turkey for lunch when he was 7. Within an hour of lunch he was hurling his brains out. Poor buddy!...See MoreThe tendon thing
Comments (53)OK, I'm not as fast as Jacques Pepin, but it only took me 11 seconds to remove the ligament from two chicken tenders today. As I said, I slaughter my own chickens, which I've raised, and so I seldom de-bone breasts when packaging. They look like this at first: I timed myself, it takes 23 seconds to run my knife under the rib bones and make my chicken breast boneless. Bones go into a bag for chicken stock, and into the freezer until the bag is full. Then the breast is cut into flatter portions for cooking as filets, or into three pieces for recipes like today's chicken with Jalfrezi sauce. The "tender" is easily removed, and the ligament located. I slide my knife under, like this, grab the end with a paper towel to avoid slipping and run that knife down the length of the ligament. 11 seconds from location of the ligament to done. Mostly, though, I leave it in, no one complains. Here it is removed, though: So, as has been said, a matter of seconds and it's gone, and it's not hard to find or remove. It's just not an issue for me. Annie...See Moresheesh
