weedyacres: Thanks so much for that detailed response! We don’t have the space for a barn door and I think you’re correct that the regular door would be too heavy(and likely too thick). I’ll check with our contractor to see what he thinks about the DIY option.

Could you give a reason for the mirror not just hung on the door going into the closet like many of us have.

Patricia Colwell: Sure! One of the walls in the closet is only 14.75” deep, so the recommendation was to make it a full wall of shelving (the old closet had a few feet of shelving here, so we know the depth works well for us). But I wanted a place to store some taller items (ironing board, long duster, etc.), easily access the outlet, and keep some shelved items out of view. So the idea was to do a 24” wide section with a few shelves on top and a mirrored door over the bottom opening. This would give me the full length mirror I want, in a good location, and solve some storage issues. We tried a mirror over the door in the old closet and it didn’t work well for a number of reasons (the closet door opens up into the shelves so the extra thickness wasn’t ideal, the mirror bangs into the shelves often, and in order to see yourself you need to go into the closet, close the door behind you, and hope nobody comes in! It’s just a clunky solution, and we decided not to do a mirror over the door in the new closet. Hope that makes sense . . . Thanks for your interest!

You could call a mirror shop and consult with them. Our mirror guy (who works out of his home) comes up with all kids of solutions for us.

Thanks for the response J Inhof! Unfortunately our renovation came to a halt, but it gave our contractor time to come up with a solution for us that he custom made in his shop. I believe he consulted with his mirror guy - so yours is good advice! When it‘s safe to resume the renovation we should be all set, and I’ll post a picture.
