Young Sugar Maple Pruning Guidance Needed

I'm getting going on my tree pruning for the year. Hopefully I haven't already waited too late to prune the Sugar Maple. As you can see in the pictures below last season one of the side branches decided to out grow the main leader, both in thickness and in height. I'm thinking that I should probably remove the side branch but I'm a little unsure. It looks like the tree has chosen the side branch as the main leader. Should I prune away the over grown side branch or the original top and let the side branch become to new trunk?
