Trump's Impeachment Was a Partisan Circus and My Testimony Wouldn't Have Helped Democrats

"

(via Associated Press):
Former national security adviser John Bolton on Wednesday denounced the House’s impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump as ”grossly partisan” and said his testimony would not have changed Trump’s acquittal in the Senate, as he continued to stay quiet on the details of a yet-to-be-released book."

I didn't read the article, but I don't disagree with the sentiment. Trump's toadies made up their minds (many even admitted to the fact) before the trial. Nothing presented would have changed the outcome.

Refusing to hear testimony didn't change the outcome of the impeachment trial, but it sure would have been nice if the American people could have heard all the facts.

We heard too many of the facts. That's why the nuthouse stopped calling witnesses and pushed it through. Their little fantasy was crumbling with every witness they called.

AnnKH, the Trump haters were anticipating Bolton delivering a death blow to Trump, which would ensure a guilty verdict and his removal. It has nothing to do with "toadies".

What's interesting to see is the Left fall for this again and again and again. Bolton's book will not contain any silver bullet with Trump's name on it. He caused a big ripple with his leak, to build anticipation of his book release. That's his capitalist prerogative and we all saw it for what it was.

It's rather funny that when the House wanted to subpoena Bolton he said no, he would have to run it through the courts first and then the Left somehow seemed to think Bolton would be on their side in the Senate trial, delivering Trump's head on a platter.

Hu-2, I don't know anyone who thought that anything Bolton could say would have changed the minds of Republican Senators. I would like to have had someone from the Administration testify under oath. I always assumed he was using this to sell books since there was never anything to keep him from giving information to the House during the impeachment process. Can we assume he would not have lied under oath?

Bolton never said that he believed Trump didn't deserve impeachment.

This is another instance of an OP posting an article from a RW blog that puts RW spin on it. Read Bolton's statement without the spin and you get a different meaning. It seems we'll have to wait for the book--if Trump allows it to be published.

Bolton seems to verify in his book that Trump was withholding the money to Ukraine because he wanted info on Biden and his son, but he also thinks his testimony wouldn’t have made any difference to the results. Bolton said his testimony wouldn't have made a difference and he is right it wouldn't have. Trump was going to be aquitted no matter what Bolton had to say. The Republicans already knew he was guilty as sin and it didn't matter to them. They were never going to remove him.

The only difference is the truth would be out there for the American people to see. He is just saying this to save his own hide from looking like he could have made a difference in the outcome.

I wonder how he will react if Trump classifies the more " interesting" parts of his book making it less profitable than he hopes it to be.

Oh, to be such a sage as to declare exactly what people think, exactly what they know, why they say what they do, and to know the outcome of situations before they even develop!

Just like who will not be president!

Fact is, there is more hot air in Washington DC and on the left than ever before--and they've been wrong, wrong, wrong about almost anything that matters.

It is the arrogance of the left to make declarative statements that turn out to be false and wrong because they are not based on knowledge but apparently on emotion and wishful thinking!

Today I turned on the news and the left media is Russia Russia Russia all over again trying to come up with someone to blame if they lose the election other than that they have poor candidates and are inept at most everything they do.

And--they have no plans for this country other than outright socialism, or bland generalities from candidates like Biden.

One thing seems genuine in all of this--the left seems to be completely oblivious to the fact that it is THEIR actions which fulfill what Russia most likely wants--chaos and lies.

They wake up and get in front of a camera and have a debate or an impeachment or a State of the Union tear up a speech and it's chaos!

There are none so blind.

In the meantime, M A G A !

Oh, here we go again. In our country, a person is innocent until proven guilty. Dems did not successfully prove "guilty as sin" of anything. Acquitted (I think that may be the word you meant) means a verdict of not guilty has been reached. There is nothing whatsoever in the definition of acquittal that indicates "guilty as sin". Didn't say there was. What I said was that there was no way they were going to go against Trump regardless of the facts so they aquitted him.

As I understand, it in terms of impeachment vs criminal trials, the acquittal is not a verdict that determines guilt or innocence but rather whether specific actions warrant removal from office. The Republican Senators said they didn't.

The senators were voting on penalty--whether or not he should be removed from office. There is no separate vote on penalty. That was the penalty vote.

An impeachment trial is different than a judicial trial--although Repubs. treated it more like the latter.

Bet money on it, even better if a demo wins by the electoral college and trump gets the popular vote. The gop dam will break on the Hypocrisy River and watching "conservatives" cry will be a welcome change of pace. Their tears will flood the land as trump barricades himself in the White House while chanting "Rigged, Rigged, Rigged". As Tito said, "I stand by my statement in the case of impeachment, acquittal does not equal innocence."

An impeachment trial is NOT a judicial trial. It is not about finding guilt or innocence. It is about whether or not to remove a president (or other high official) from office because he is "unfit" because he committed treason or violated the constitution--or for whatever reason the House thinks he is "unfit." No specific crime is required, as in a judicial trial. The Senate can (and did) vote politically, not judicially, because it is a political trial (though Pelosi has a point about no actual Senate trial ever took place).

In the impeachment process, "guilty" means "remove from office." "Not guilty" means "don't remove from office." It most certainly does not mean he is innocent of the impeachment charges.

He will go down in history as one of our few impeached presidents, not as an innocent man wrongly accused of impeachable actions. The stain will remain no matter how hard you scrub it.

And I'd guess that if "guilt" and "penalty" were separate decisions, more than one Repub. would have agreed that Trump committed the "unfit" or "inappropriate" actions, but that they were not serious enough for removal from office.

Actually, it was. The policy against indicting a sitting president was reviewed and applied during the Clinton impeachment as well.

The policy dates at least back to 1973 (Nixon impeachment) and was reviewed again in 2000 for Clinton. The Clinton administration DOJ rendered an internal opinion against indictments of a sitting president as a matter of “considerations of constitutional structure.”

It's not a new policy that only relates to Trump, or only to Republicans.
