How do I decorate my huge fireplace?

Years after encouragement from the Houzz community I finally took the leap and whitewashed the red brick on my family room fireplace. It is a great change, I wish I had done it sooner. Now my husband wants to hang the tv on it (as seen). I don’t mind it but haven’t the slightest idea how to use the rest of the space. Do I hang shelves, artwork, lights, nothing? Not to worry, we don’t build fires and the chimney is off to the right of the tv anyway. The wall paint color will change to SW Balanced Beige, the curtain rods will be moved up and the curtains replaced.

Before you mount the TV up that high, place your furniture in the room and see if the viewing height is comfortable for you.

If it were me, I would move the TV to the wood niche where the basket is current shown. I wouldn't want it up that high. This way the TV doesn't dominate the room.

You might consider interesting wall hung shelving on each side of the tv.

Thank you so much. I was afraid nobody would help in time. I'll get to it right away. They are already showing a little wilt on the bottommost leaves. I searched and searched for root propagation methods, read one where you cut two slits, read how growers use rhizopon AA for more blooms when transplanting, was going to run to the nursery, they may not have it, and we want bushes and worry about the blooms later. So I'll just do as you suggest and hope for the best. I'll try to bury them about the same level they grew. I don't think you want to put them way deep in the pot, nor too shallow either. I did a lot of reading and searching last night, and it seems fall is the best time for transplanting roses/suckers, but I think early spring should be ok, too. I would, in time like to find out the best way to do root propagation like the old rose searchers I've read about did. It sounds easier than cuttings if it works except I fear most property owners would be more reluctant to let you dig around a rose rather than just take some cuttings.

I’m not a designer but I think your instincts are right. If everything else is super light I agree the sofa will look too dark and heavy. I think a light, warm neutral paint would be great, and accents of blue would make that gold sofa sing. I think your existing neutral walls look okay, actually. What if you just tried painting the red accent wall a nice mid tone blue?

I think both jck910 and Sammie J have excellent points. For some reason the gable above your garage and your other front facing gable look unfinished to me. Consider a modification of the roof line like the one below on the front facing gable where you have the finished roof line and the window. A window that would coordinate with your other windows. Just posting the insp pic below for concept of the window and roofline modifications. I'm not a designer or architect, just going by what I would do. Hopefully you get other input.

nothing. consider painting that "wood plank" the same color as the wall. take the cup of pens off the built in as well. less is more. the issue is too many elements and colors, tile floor painted fire place wood planks... instead bring the attention down and away from the tv.

Looks beautiful! I love the look of chopped stacked wood in the nook. I too agree with a bit larger tv.

Your fireplace needs to look more like a fireplace. Add a big chunky wood mantle just above the horizontal "stripe" of brick. A mantle will tie the wide expanse of brick together. Hang a bigger tv because it is such a wide space. Fill the wood nook with firewood even though you won't burn it. It will give that nook a purpose. Fill the basket with kindling wood and put it beside the firebox. Get some great black fireplace tools and put beside basket of kindling. Add decor to your mantle but make sure it's BIG. Small scale decor will just look like clutter. I'm thinking maybe a pair of BIG lanterns with candles on either side of the tv. Don't worry about the tv being too high. I've had my tv over my fireplace for years and I don't have neck problems.

If you hang the TV there, then you definitely need to do something more with the firebox and wood niche -- right now, the alternating pattern of black rectangles just makes the whole thing look like a quilt. Also remember that if you move your TV to this spot, you'll need to figure out new ways to work all the cable boxes, DVRs, and wiring ...

Thank you for your comments. The larger tv arrived the day after I posted this. We use a streaming service so there is no need of equipment. The lanterns are an interesting idea. I may have to test that out.
