Large window into sliding patio door

Hi everyone! We have a a big 10' wide window in our living room. We don't dislike them, but a sliding patio door outside(would lead directly into our backyard) functionally would make more sense. We would set up our living room differently if we had a door as well obviously. My question is, what would you guys do? Try to get a custom 10' door(would have to be custom made) or do a common door(6 or 8' door) and add some sidelights or windows?

The outside is Masonite siding. It does have brick mould casing the window so it shouldn't be the most difficult thing I've ever done lol. Boy those are famous last words 😂

Why would feel it needed to be custom made? What material are you thinking of purchasing? Interior finish?

I have been unable to find a door that is 10' wide that hasn't been discontinued. I was hoping to get a white vinyl door if possible. Maybe I haven't been looking in the proper spots either

That is actually the way it is done in a lot of areas. They use it as what is called "wood buck". It is attached using masonry anchors to the concrete an then the window is installed normally.

Thanks for responding - 1. I thought about this, but people can see into my bedroom from above so no they should be covered 2. I want to show off the tall ceilings and I think breaking up the top and bottom wouldn't look as good. I considered doing both shades (rollers or similar) AND curtains so that I could roll them down just to cover the top and have the sliding doors open through the curtains in nice weather- you think that would work? 3. Both, but even something light so I'm not in full view would do 4. Not really required but I would go for opaque fabrics to help the cause Another option I considered is using privacy film or glass frost on the windows and forgo the dressings completely which is the easy way out, but the cost is having no view lol...

Another thought I had is if we went with the 8' and a window, we could add a doggy door possibly too

We did a 6’ sliding door with 2’ side lights on each side.

I would not do a doggy door if you have colder winters, they leak a lot of air.

Shouldn't be that difficult to do a 10' door in a 3 panel vinyl. It will be custom, but it is not so egregiously large that it can't be made.

Impossible to say from Market to Market. If you stay within the confines of the current window footprint, you should be able to do this from a standard window/door contractor vs. a GC. What is on the outside of the window in term of siding, brick, etc.?
