can you mix and/or layer gel wood stain?
Comments (7)The idea of running some test panels is a good one. It's sort of a cardinal rule. Be careful with your top coat over existing finish. In the last 10-15 years, cabinet mfr have been using a lot of 2-part conversion finishes on cabinets. These are generally very tough, but not agreeable to repair or top-coating with anything. It can range from splotching to not adhering well. Oil-based gel stains will have a longer open time if you add a little mineral spirits (1 teaspoon per pint). For good information on glazes, see either Bob Flexner's "Understanding Wood Finishing" (2d ed.) or Jeff Jewitt's "Complete Illustrated Guide to Wood Finishing." Both have good information and lots of photos. Sometimes the glaze is left to "hang up" in the moldings, corners, and details. Other times, it's applied to add depth and adjust overall color....See MoreI'm putting panels in wood came like stained glass

Comments (16)Thank you guys for the replies! I hear you guys on the kitchen paint. We recently moved in and I absolutely hate it. Only reason I haven't painted the walls yet is because these walls seem to be sponge painted, so I would need to sand down all the walls before painting 😭 A lot of my family advised me to first paint the cabinets and see if I can live with the paint color, otherwise change it. I know painting the cabinets is a lot of work, someone even said it might take me 4 months of weekends to do them. All I know is this kitchen needs a lot of work. More feedback or advise is highly appreciated!! My plan to paint the cabinets so far is sand them all, fill the oak grain with wood filler, sand again, couple coats of primer then paint. I watched a lot of tutorials and videos on painting cabinets, and I feel prepared to tackle it. Only thing I am unsure about is the sides....See MoreDo you know where I can source vertical wood slat panels?
Comments (2)It‘s hard to tell but it looks like 1x2 or 1x3 (maybe even 1x4)which you can buy at the big hardware stores but it also looks like nicer wood than the bulk offerings so it may not be appropriate for your project because it is likely to have bends and imperfections. But not neccessarily, so take a look....See MoreBlueberryBundtcake - 6a/5b MA
