Wooden floors in the kitchen????
Comments (5)My red oak kitchen floors have held up relatively well. The one area they haven't was directly an issue because of water damage (sink was leaking over a weekend that we were out so it sat on the floor for more than 8 hours). It's not terribly visible (more a texture thing when walking on it) and the fix is relatively simple (re-sand and poly). I actually found that the finish I used was not terribly good and so need to re-do the entire main floor as a result - so net/net, no extra work for me!...See MoreWood Floors in a Kitchen
Comments (9)As I'm sure you are aware hickory cabinets usually have lots of variation in color and grain. Within the same cabinets you may see white to reddish brown. These variations are more prevelant on cabinets with a natural finish. It can be very dramatic and your cabinets will definitely be the star of your kitchen. I think you really need to look carefully at what type of wood you choose for your floor. In my opinion it should be something with minimal graining. Perhaps you should consider maple with a stain on it. You are right in thinking that the color should not be almost the same as the cabinets or it will look like a sea of wood. You should have contrast between your cabinets and flooring. I know want a light kitchen but darker floor will actually ground your kitchen and really won't make the overall kitchen dark. I think you should pick out one of the darker brown variations in you cabinets and use that as your floor color. Whatever you decide, I think your floor should be at least 3 shades lighter or darker than your cabinets. I have natural cherry cabinets in my kitchen and my floors are natural ash. I think the contrast is a great feature. If you search google using the terms gardenweb, hickory cabinets and wood floors or flooring you should find lots of discussions and photos. Good of luck with your choices. Can't wait to see your reveal....See MoreDark or Light wood floors with white kitchen?
Comments (31)The contrasting colors you're looking at is a GREAT place to start! Pairing the stone backsplash to tie all the other colors together is perfect. However... The floor you're choosing (because of the finish) will be a bit more upkeep. If you're looking for a dark floor with some character, why not go with Reclaimed Hardwood? They're really gorgeous, and they have so much character. You can get them in virtually any width, and you'll be helping out the environment while you're at it. The best part of wood flooring with texture is the fact that you wont go crazy about the scuffs, scratches, etc... With the reclaimed floors, there's really not much to worry about... Great for pet-owners and homes with small children too. (Oh, and they are on our 2017 "Trendy Flooring" list this year) 2017 Flooring Trends The one above is reclaimed heart pine... (Im just showing you some images I've found across the web, just to explain what I mean) Again here, there's the reclaimed hardwood floors, the white cabinets and the lovely textured surface of the flooring. This one is probably the most extreme of the three, but you can see in this one especially, what I meant by the flooring not showing much of the dirt, or scuffs and scratches.. there's so much beautiful texture already, that you won't have to worry about them. Hope this helps! But you've got a great idea on the decor. Yes, the flooring trends in Europe are super-light, and Matte finishes, and really neutral colors, but your idea of pairing the stone and the textured hardwood flooring was spot on! Comments (12)First things first: PAINT with WHITE PRIMER. Yes. Just get the walls READY for a new colour. Primer is SUPER cheap and SUPER USEFUL. It gets the walls ready for the EXPENSIVE paint...without pay for expensive paint+primer. Once you have the yellow walls covered you will see the REAL colour of the house. The kitchen really needs to have the yellow taken off the walls. And get the tiles off the backsplash. The other SINGLE option: new counter top. But I would only decide on that once I had gotten all the warm tones off the walls. For me the biggest issue for the house is the tile-like flooring. I'm hoping they are vinyl...that would make for an easy removal. If they are real tile...they will be expensive to remove and deal with. But first things first: cover your yellow walls with white primer. You will be amazed at how different the wood looks when it is not being washed with more yellow....See Morejck910
