Remodeling Design Dilemma Fireplaces

fireplace size too big?

We are getting our fireplace redone. I said that I had wanted the new stone facade to end where the top of the current mantle end, which extends about 3 inches more in both direction. The new mantle is going to be a beautiful rustic four inch wood slab which extends another two inches out. Now I’m worried that the fireplace will look weird bc it ends too close to the windows, but the fireplace company (very reputable) doesnt think that it will be a problem. We are not planning on putting different window treatments in at this time. Did I make the right choice? Thanks for any input in advance. IMO the TV is way too high but without showing the whole room size is who knows I would not extend the mantel wider than it is now.

I agree with everything Patricia just said. I would not go any larger than what you have, and yes, the tv is way too high.

I thought our 2300 sq ft. house was just perfect for the 3 of us... - then we decided I traveled too much for work and opened up my own business - in the house - then things grew and I added an employee - in the house - Then hubby took early out from the University and expanded his tax & consulting practice - in the house - then his practice grew and he added a part ime employee - in the house - then things really got successful and some parts of the year he can have as many as 3 employees - in the house!!! Net effect is that our 4 bedroom house some days feels like a 1 bedroom office - we no longer have a home. We are building on 20 acres in the country - house with a good sized office wing. I've redesigned about a dozen times and can't seem to get it down below 5000 sq ft. So, for us (and the assorted clients, employees and visiting relatives) I guess the perfect size is 5000 sq ft.

Hippity you mention that this is going into a fireplace. If that is the case then you might want to look at fireplace inserts in addition to wood stoves. I would agree with Chris that you shouldn't be married to VC as the only game out there. For a small area like you are suggesting there are many other good stoves such as the Tribute and Craftsbury made by Hearthstone or the Vista by Pacific Energy. Englander is a stove manufacturer in Virginia who makes steel stoves, (not the prettiest) which sell in Lowe's and Home Depot that are efficient and affordable, the 12FPP is one of theirs which would fit the square footage you outlined. If it is an interior chimney then with 30 feet of draft I don't think insulation would be required but it can help.An exterior chimney might necessitate some insulation. $2K+ seems like a lot though. The local dealer here quoted me a price of $1,195 for a 20' flex liner with a block-off plate, no insulation. Look around and see what else is out there, if you are going to spend the money get one which fits your space heating, decorative, and lifestyle needs. I wouldn't go for the oversize stove and start cutting holes in your floor for vents. If you had a fire it would spread quickly through one of those. Good luck.

Addition to my above statement...I would keep the lovely picture and hang it vertically somewhere else in your home. I would look for something that has the same horizontal measurements but has only the white matt framed part height for above the fireplace. If you cannot find a picture you like in that size a mirror would also look nice with some cool statement accessories in colors that jive with what you have. I see that you have a tot/baby by some of the things in your room. The fireplace mantel could be a place to add some non-enclosed accessories where little hands can't reach.

Your pics have now appeared they were not there prior. Rather than edit my previous post I will mention that your shower backer is an approved shower tile backer board. However I have my doubts about the proper screws and definitely think the pattern if incorrect. Also this board is NOT waterproof and there needs to be waterproofing done. Can be either poly sheeting behind the backer or a topical surface applied waterproofing. Also the joints of the tile backer require taping with a non-alkaline tape and taped with thinset. I see none of this but we do not know if any of this was done as we do not see the tile being applied to the wall.

I also would not go any wider than the width of the current mantle.

Your current fireplace is appropriately proportioned for the width of the firebox.

What is the architectural style of the interior of the house? Your current fireplace is traditional. If the rest of the house is traditional (e.g. staircase), I wouldn’t go rustic with the fireplace. You can change things up with furniture and decor, but redoing a fireplace is expensive and more permanent.

I agree with others, the mantel should not be wider and the TV should be lower.

So, here's how I see it coming together.

Fireplace Mockup: Stacked stone with rustic beam mantel and Craftsman Custom Fireplace Door in Forged Iron. You can bring the stone down over the black metal at the top of the fireplace, which will allow you to lower the mantel height significantly, which in tern allows you to lower the TV by about 6" or 8".

If you have pictures of the actual stone and mantel you are considering, you can post them here and I may be able to create a mockup with those materials.
