a birthday party...
Comments (20)Lars, thank you for all your nice words. And we all should try to get together with friends more often, I believe that company keeps us young and happy. And you can always find more friends, it is great to change ideas like we do here in the forum. And please post pictures if you make a party for Kevin. I know that you can throw a great party, with all the talent and experience that you have. Cathy, that is great to know that you are close to Land O Lakes, I will let you know when I will go to my friend to drop the seedlings, I also go to an Indian restaurant in the area and I buy the best basmati rice there. Did you try making the Columbia famous salad? It comes out so good, I made it for a party and my friends guessed it right, they all knew about the salad.... All the time that I walked in the butterfly conservatory, the butterfly didn't move. The people working there said it was good luck, so I guess that I am going to have a happy snake year! lol. Querida Sol, how could I not have guarapo! of course I did, and what I love about here is that in all the bars they can make an authentic Cuban mojito. It is a good thing that I have to walk everywhere, parking and driving is out of question. And here are more pictures for you..... The Audubon Society museum had a nice table setting The people at Sunset Pier watching the sunset... Conch fritters and mojito for me,lol The sunset Dinner at Meson De Pepe (the oldest restaurant in town, served Cuban food) Rice, yuca, beans, yellow rice, grouper. I am afraid that I am not going to sample the famous Key Lime Pie.:) Silvia...See MoreBirthday party ideas for my mom
Comments (5)I've been thinking more of this, and I think I can get her DH to go along. Since we've not really ever done anything for mom on her birthday, she would easily buy it that he's taking her to the casino to celebrate. They go frequently, and he can say they're going to meet his brother & his wife. She'd totally buy this scenario. Then I can do an open house at the club house. I figured I can supply the main dish (something simple) and non-alcoholic beverages. Everyone else (family) can pitch in with food stuffs, too, and I know that the people in her park will be happy to pitch in with pot luck. If my mom doesn't know that family is going to be there (including me) she'll absolutely love it. Our family has a tendency to do surprises of unexpected family at events and it's well received. My primary concern now is trying to find lodging for everyone...since virtually all family will be from out of town. I think this could be a blast for mom, and she wouldn't mind people knowing her real age. It would tickle her because her peers are ancient (looks & energy wise) compared to her. She loves to be the center of attention, so I think she'd really like this....See MoreKids' Birthday Parties
Comments (11)I must agree with Sylvia here. There are certain occasions where a gift is expected, and if you don't inform attendees, then THEY will follow the etiquette rules of yore and bring a gift. A "tactless" comment on the invitation publicly informing others that this isn't a gift giving event can save everyone a lot of headache. Showers and kids birthday parties fall squarely into the realm of gift expected. If the hosts/guest of honor truly do not want gifts, I see nothing wrong with stating it on the invitation. I did exactly that for my "meet the baby" parties I threw for my younger 3. I didn't want or need any items but I was worried others would look at my party as a "shower" of sorts and I might be judged negatively for 1. having a shower or "gift grab" when it wasn't necessary and 2. having the audacity to host it myself. I worded my invitations to specifically state that gifts weren't wanted. My 3rd was actually born on Memorial day and the invitations said, "we had a memorable memorial day, come meet her!! The only presents we want is your presence." I was very proud of my friends daughter a few years ago. We had a rash of wildfires and several homes were burned. Her daughter was turning 8 and told her mom, "I don't need anything, can people just give my presents to the people who lost their houses?". So mom spread the word and asked that anyone wanting to give a gift, to please make a donation to the local fund set up to assist those who lost everything. It made the local news and both mom and daughter were embarrassed by it as they weren't trying to seek attention, they were just trying to do good. No one was guilted into donating because of this little girls selfless request. If I recall correctly it was less than 200 that was donated. This child just wanted those less fortunate to benefit and I say we should encourage that behavior! Too many kids and parents these days look to holidays as a gift grab, when I see an example of selflessness and generosity, it warms the cockles of my heart, regardless of how tactless it is according to the ancient etiquette rules....See MoreSalad, veggie tray, or something else?
Comments (26)All of the ideas above look absolutely awesome. Since you have decided on a salad, I wanted to share what I have done several times lately - a very simple antipasto salad. I make it in a 9 x 13 type dish - I have a few that are a nicer than Pyrex, but Pyrex would do as well. It helps people get it out easier - or a large platter would do well too. Chop up romaine, spinach, red leaf, whatever kind of lettuce. Make it small enough so it doesn't need to be cut further. Then top it with green olives, black olives, quartered pepperoni, yellow peppers (the ones in the jar - I use mild), chickpeas, quartered artichokes and cherry tomato halves. I sometimes cook tortellini and throw that in. Then top with some shaved parm cheese. I even buy the stuff already shaved. It is so pretty - and so easy. My family likes Olive Garden salad dressing. I am not a fan of it, so I always have some Italian vinagrette as well. I make this salad and there is never anything left. Enjoy your party!!!...See MoreAnne
