Most Popular Names of 2009
Comments (29)Stephen F Austin was one of the founding fathers of Texas, but Sam Houston was "the father of Texas." Austin & Tyler are cities here; Austin is our state capital, & Tyler is the Rose Capital! about those old-fashioned names: I recently checked a site for people named Sylvia; almost all of them were in their nineties. When I was a little girl, I never met another Sylvia, & I always wanted to be Debbie or Cindy or Peggy or Linda or Sharon. However, unlike my Debbie, etc friends, I never had to be called Sylvia T or Sylvia 1, 2, or 3 in those crowded boomer-era schoolrooms. & it varies with the community; A Mexican-American friend at work told me that it's a popular name with Spanish-speaking families; she said I'm the only non-Hispanic Sylvia she's ever met! Today, I like my name; it seems to fit me as a grown-up better than it fit me as a child....See MorePopular vs. Good Taste
Comments (76)"I do think we are exposed to so many visuals these days that it's not hard to be influenced, want something different, or to begin to feel like what you have is looking rather dated or dowdy." I'll agree with that 100%, at least about the first part of your statement. What also happens, I think, is that you see something completely new to you, in a shelter magazine or on a blog or here on this forum, and suddenly, you, too, want to own A Whatever or paint a bathroom in Whatever. This has happened to me so many times. pal's example of Robshaw comes to mind. I first saw a bedspread in a book, and I immediately coveted it. I'd never heard of John Robshaw before; all of a sudden, though, it seemed his textiles were in every issue of every magazine that came into my house. I realized, after seeing pictures of his own place, that I really didn't want to decorate much in his style: what I REALLY REALLY want is that first bedspread. That particular fabric seems not to be produced now, and I probably won't ever be able to get it. But I might end up with some other fabric of his on a bed. It might seem like I'm following a popular trend/designer, when in fact I really like some of his textiles. To the extent that having a Robshaw textile on a bed is a trend, it's undoubtedly because I'm hardly the only person to see an example, like it, and want it. As for things looking dated or dowdy, I could not give one whit what anyone else thinks of my stuff. However, and it's a big "however," when you regularly see new or updated things, I think you do begin to look at your own things with new eyes. When you do that, sometimes your things don't hold up well in such comparisons; sometimes, you've become exposed to different versions of what you have. These versions may be more expensive, better designed, or of different materials, or just plain different. "I'm thinking of painting my powder room gray. I've never been a gray person. Didn't care for it much at first. But I've seen it so often now that I've grown to like it. A lot. I'm not sure how much gray I could live with but I am glad I've come to appreciate something new. Will it be a love that lasts or that I could live with forever? Who knows. " I know what you mean. I don't want to live in gray rooms, with gray furnishings; it's not a neutral I'd ordinarily find pleasing. However, we have a couple of stone walls and stone floors, and their main color is gray. In one room, I'm actually considering a gray trim to match the walls. I don't think of myself as someone who would ever slavishly or blindly follows trends, but I can't say I'd have considered gray as a trim color if it were not for this popular craze for gray. Anyway, except for the person who starts what becomes a trend, isn't everyone else a follower? :)...See MoreThe 20 most popular 2015 Houzz kitchens
Comments (13)Fun! Even more fun when I scrolled down reading Lisa's great commentary. But I can't find a dog at all, much less one that matches that patriotic kitchen. Wine bar? Porthole window in pantry? Red range? Clicking on the photos didn't yield other photos of the kitchens. How did you see those other things? Where's the sink or fridge? How about where's the hood? :) I love the cabinets and design of the Modern-Scandi kitchen, #6, except they blew it by draining it of any personality. It needs color. It should be fun....See MoreHow are you opposite of what's popular?
Comments (71)I've never been divorced. (How few people can say that these days! LOL) I've never been married. (Came close a couple times and turned down a proposal!) No cable/satellite and don't want it. I think a vehicle is for transportation, not a status symbol. My current vehicle is 10+ years old. I haven't had a car payment in nearly 40 years. (I had a 9 month loan on the first new vehicle I bought and haven't had a vehicle loan since.) I pay cash for my vehicles. Since some are so cheap these days, I believe everyone should have a cell phone for emergencies. There's nearly no pay phones so if an emergency should arise you should be able to call for help. I think it's strange someone would be so luddite on their safety. But it's their choice. Basic prepaid cell phone for me Seriously dislike what's called "country" music. I do like what I refer to as "mountain music" I listen to news stations in the vehicle. Seldom listen to music in a vehicle. I stay home when weather is bad and people shouldn't be on the roads. I don't get into holidays, the hoopla and the fake love and fake generosity out there. Don't like most "reality" shows. Don't like talk shows. Don't like shows with hosts that are part-time doctors in just certain areas. I won't name names. Can't stand Judge Judy. Her schtick got old a long, long time ago. I buy clothes to serve a function, not for looks. T-shirts should have a pocket in them! I don't take an annual vacation. I happen to enjoy my home. Don't need to get away from it. I proudly use credit cards and more proudly pay them off every month. And very happily deposit the cashback and say thank you. Pets I've had have all been ones who needed a home. I detest puppy mills and fashion pet shops. So much more but that's enough for now....See Morejmm1837
