Invisalign Tray--one tooth seems off

Anybody with any Invisalign experience? I am on my 3rd tray. I change weekly. On Friday evenings. Yesterday everything felt fine with tray. Wore it all night. Actually slept close to 11 hours so they were in there a good long time. I gently brush trays once per day per the Invisalign directions. Any hoo, today when put the upper tray in after breakfast, I noticed that it is not flush against one tooth. Maybe it's been like this since Friday night and I am just noticing? It's not flush on the back on my tooth. Is it worthy going to dentist for this? Should I just leave it? Is this a big deal? I did use the dental rolls for the good fit. What are refinements btw? Thanks for any thoughts/advice.

I'm on month eight of my Invisalign treatment. I have sometimes noticed that a tray isn't flush with a tooth, but it seems that new trays sometimes take a day or two to soften up and completely mold around my teeth.

If it were me, I wouldn't worry about it unless it was a really noticeable gap, as you'll be getting several new trays in the future and they will continue to move and straighten your teeth. But, if you're concerned, it certainly wouldn't hurt to call your dentist on Monday and ask about it. That's the only way to know for sure if it's something that needs to be looked at.

Interesting that you are changing your trays on a weekly basis. Mine are changed every two weeks.

DawninCal--you are so good to answer right away. I am always a nervous nelly. I have 18 trays total. I only have 2 teeth that are super out of whack. I posted a while ago about shifting teeth and I am pretty sure you answered right away and gave the invisalign advice! How do you clean your trays?

Beth I hoped the cost here in small town western NC would be less than the estimates i got in suburban Chicago before we moved, but it wasn't. I'm sure there is some variable by location but probably more by the extent of straightening needed would be my guess. Regardless, you got a great deal! Sue I have what they call 'attachments' on a few of my teeth. They are tiny pieces of tooth color material, that are placed to help in the movement - all depends on exactly what needs to be moved where. Those are put on with dental cement so perhaps that was what your friend reacted to. Also, each new set of trays has sharp edges in varying degrees and need to be filed down - literally i use either an emery board or a cuticle pumice stone to do it. I have had some places that were difficult to get smooth enough and occasionally get sores on the inside of my lips or tongue but wax helps with that. I wanted this badly enough that I am just sucking it up and plowing through but I have a long way to go - ask me again in 2 years! I get the sibilant 's' sound - not quite a lisp - when I'm doing a lot of talking and my mouth gets dry. Ssssometimes it bothers me but mosssstly I just shrug it off ;-) I'm focused on the end result.

chisue, cost will vary depending for each individual and how much alignment is needed to straighten the teeth. In my case, the total cost was $2400. I have Delta Dental and they paid $1000 (the max they will pay for orthodontia). I have arranged a payment plan with my dentist:s office for the remaining $1400 of $200 per month. For anyone who wants to straighten teeth that are out of alignment, speaking to one's dentist about available treatment plans is the first step. For some, a fix may be as simple as what MiMi had done, while others may be candidates for and opt for the more expensive ortho treatments. Personally, I couldn't be happier with how my teeth look and I consider the treatment money well spent. If I hadn't done it, my teeth would have kept moving and I think I would have had some serious dental problems later in life. Best of luck to everyone who is dealing with moving, shifting teeth.

Ritaweeda, I would have more confidence in her opinion if she had actually checked my teeth thoroughly. She didn't, just a quick glance. My old dentist actually used instruments to check the integrity of my teeth and old fillings. She also is the one who would checked my gum health, not the hygienist. The new dentist also didn't tell me which teeth specifically where affected, just 7, and then told me I needed to go discuss it with her office manager regarding pricing to fix them. When I said how is that possible, I just went to the dentist a year and a half ago (I thought it was but turns out it was 2 1/2 years) she told me I had a lot of "dark cracks" that she would fix if it were her teeth. So is it staining from tea and coffee or decay? When I got in the office to discuss the pricing, I told the office manager I wanted a second opinion and asked for a list of which teeth were affected. There were 10, not 7. Then I'm thinking not only are they trying to scam me but my insurance company too. My old dentist would have told me exactly which tooth/teeth had a problem and told me my options. I have an appointment early Monday morning with my old dentist so we will see. I also decided not to go back into the other dentists office for my xrays. I'm angry, and these days I don't always hold my tongue like I did when I was younger.

Re compliance: My son, now 29, decided he wanted to fix the alignment of his front teeth and could not wear braces due to his trombone playing. He wound up also needing jaw alignment correction. He was playing trombone an average of 4 hrs a day then, so no way he would get 22 hours in. They told him he would just have to be really good about getting as much time as possible and expect it to take a bit longer to reach the goal. It worked well -- except that each tray meant adjustments in his playing, but that would have been true with braces too -- and the metal on both sides of his mouth would have been torturous. He also didn't have the keeping teeth clean and avoiding cavities that my other son did. My sons both ate well, especially in marching band season, but I think teeth that were sore from braces caused more issues with that son and my sister. So -- if they will stick with it, I'd probably favor invisalign. But it all depends on the kid.

I clean my trays with a toothbrush when I get up in the morning and again before I go to bed at night.

I noticed you asked in your original post about refinement. That's the phase I'm in now. It's not unusual to finish the first course of treatment and find that a few teeth still need some fine tuning. The teeth are scanned again and a second set of trays made. For most people one time is enough, but Invisalign allows for up to three refinements. There is no additional cost for this part of the process.

I'm hoping that one refinement is all I will need as I am getting a bit tired of wearing the trays, but I am so very happy with how my teeth look. It has been well worth the time and expense to me.
