9 Dem. senators. led by Warren, formally call for Barr's resignation

dublinbay z6 (KS)

Hey, this is cool!

Go, Elizabeth, go!

------------------------

"Following up on her Wednesday insistence that Barr resign over his apparent interference in the criminal case against Roger Stone, Warren led eight other Democratic senators in a formal letter calling for Barr's departure on Friday.

"We are writing to express our alarm about and opposition to the unethical political intervention" by Barr and the Justice Department in the case of President Trump's longtime adviser Roger Stone, the senators, including fellow 2020 candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) claim in their letter to Barr. "The interference ... is a clear violation of your duty to defend fair, impartial, and equal justice for all Americans," and "we call on you to resign immediately," the senators wrote to Barr.
9 who signed: Warren, Blumenthal, Markey, Murray, Merkley, Van Hollen, Wyden, Sanders, Hirono.

I'd happily sign that letter myself!

Posted on another thread that one commentator said thousands of federal prosecutors across the country should resign in protest. Four is a start, but we need more willing to take a stand against the corruption.

The conclusions are obvious to anyone who is not a dyed-in-the-wool Trump supporter. The rule of law is gone. The fix is in. The criminals are running the show completely for their own benefit. Personal loyalty is paramount. Rules and laws are "interpreted" and bent and subverted and broken howsoever they see fit. The most egregiously awful thing a person can do is "snitch", exposing the wrongdoing of those in power. Its exactly like a Mob family, and "You don’t ever take sides with anyone against the family. Ever."

We idiots like to see the judicial system free from intimidation from the White House -- in this case intervention to favor a long-time friend and associate. And the elephant in the room being the longer the prison sentence, the greater the likelihood that valued friend and associate will cooperate against Dear Leader.

Paprikash, There is no narrative too preposterous that someone on the left won't pick it up and run with it.

I don't think they're so much "idiots" as they are ordinary people convinced their fellow Americans are idiots. I would add that the Senators have participated in a disgraceful charade since Americans elected President Trump. Their hostility toward our system and the people it's supposed to serve couldn't be more transparent.

abh: Their hostility toward our system and the people it's supposed to serve couldn't be more transparent.

No, the hostility is toward the corrupt criminal in the white house, not the Constitutional republic he is destroying.

And the people he's supposed to serve are *all* Americans, not just those who wear MAGA hats. And if you haven't noticed, that pool of people he actually supports is getting smaller all the time as he mounts daily attacks on anyone who disagrees with him including republicans, even people he himself appointed. And the number of victims of his ill-conceived policies are only growing as he goes after medicare, social security, clean water, clean air, education spending, disability programs, pre-existing conditions, food security programs, housing, etc.

https://thehill.com/opinion/white-house/483084-every-democrat-should-run-on-trumps-disastrous-budget-proposal

It is perhaps this divisiveness trump rouses of American against American, where his supporters feel they are the only *true* *patriotic* Americans and the rest are enemies of the state, that is most dangerous for our nation. We remember what Lincoln said, and he was right then and right now.

Seems Warren has lots of company in the form of prosecutors and justice department officials:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/16/us/politics/barr-trump-justice-department.html?fbclid=IwAR3h05VQkORj92N3myitx-38ZVW6wOjDEoq3hqEimj0Lm5IZZm6DV2EYOv0

More than 1,100 former federal prosecutors and Justice Department officials called on Attorney General William P. Barr on Sunday to step down after he intervened last week to lower the Justice Department’s sentencing recommendation for President Trump’s longtime friend Roger J. Stone Jr.

They also urged current government employees to report any signs of unethical behavior at the Justice Department to the agency’s inspector general and to Congress.

Many of these Senators sit on committees that have been investigating Trump but whose GOP Chairs have tried to protect him by limiting their investigations. Wyden, for instance, is ranking member of the Finance Committee and he has been following the money. He's also on the Intelligence Committee. Believe me, the Senators know a lot more about Trump's corruption and incompetence than any of his supporters know. So do the GOP Senators but their jobs are more important. They are a disgrace.

It will all come out after the Dems take the Senate and Presidency.

Nope.

The hostility began long before Donald Trump was elected. There's no reason to be hostile to a President for putting Americans first. It's what American presidents are supposed to do.

Does that mean hostility towards Mr. Trump? It's fairly well-deserved, considering his track record.

I saw that news about the former federal prosecutors and Justice Dept. officials earlier.

"...In an open letter released Sunday, the former officials say Barr broke Justice Department rules when he overruled federal prosecutors in Stone’s criminal case, seeking a far more lenient sentence than the potential nine years prosecutors originally recommended.

“It is unheard of for the Department’s top leaders to overrule line prosecutors, who are following established policies, in order to give preferential treatment to a close associate of the President,” they said.

In their call for Barr’s resignation, the former Justice Department officials suggested his behavior is a threat to democracy.

“Governments that use the enormous power of law enforcement to punish their enemies and reward their allies are not constitutional republics; they are autocracies,” they wrote...."

> No, Chipotle, I think these 9 democrat senators are idiots

If you postulate that these Senators actually expect that Bill Barr will read the letter, and realize that his blatant interference in this case is a violation of his prescribed role as Attorney General and declare "My gosh, you are right" and summarily submit his resignation, then Yes they are idiots.

However I believe that is not what they expect will happen. That would only happen if Bill Barr had some measure of honor, and it is clear to me at least he has none. I believe that the goal is for Bill Barr to have to admit -- at least to himself -- that his actions are out of bounds, and step back in this case. But I think there is little chance of that happening.

More than 1,100 ex-DOJ employees call for Attorney General Barr's resignation

More than 1,100 ex-employees of the Department of Justice signed a letter calling on Attorney General William Barr to resign Sunday, writing that his handling of the Roger Stone case "openly and repeatedly flouted" the principle of equal justice under the rule of law. The letter comes after a contentious week for the Justice Department, which already faces allegations of succumbing to political pressure from President Donald Trump. The ex-employees called current DOJ employees to "report future abuses" and acknowledged that "because we have little expectation" Barr will resign, "it falls to the Department’s career officials to take appropriate action to uphold their oaths of office and defend nonpartisan, apolitical justice.”

Justice Department backs away from stiff prison sentence for Roger Stone, a longtime ally of Trump, overruling the department's career prosecutors.

abh: The hostility began long before Donald Trump was elected.

Yes, the hostility toward trump began long before he was elected because those of us who knew him well, having watched him con and scam and defraud and bloviate for decades, didn't want anyone of his character anywhere near the presidency. We were right then and nothing he's done since has proved us wrong.

There's no reason to be hostile to a President for putting Americans first. It's what American presidents are supposed to do.

I know this "Americans first" nationalistic rhetoric is your thing, but the reality is he's only putting *some* Americans first, namely his wealthy supporters, and he's dumping on all the rest. This includes his average joe supporters who don't seem to realize is he's dumping on them too with his policies: cutting social security, cutting medicare, eliminating pre-existing conditions protections, making our air and water much dirtier, cutting education and more.

Moreover, beyond his policies, his illegal and abusive actions have torn at the very fiber of our government, while creating an authoritarian president without any checks and balances...a president who has proven more than once that he's ok with breaking the law for his own personal political gain. That hurts *everyone*, but *Americans* get hurt *first* as the power of our voices and votes are eroded. That's how trump is putting "Americans first".
