When did you lay your hardwood floors?!?!?
Comments (8)Prefinished and raw wood are not comparable as to install point. Like yours soonermagic, he put our heart pine in as soon as the sheetrock was done. He then covered all of the floors with heavy duty corrugated craft paper and I watched them (the subs and the floors)like a hawk. Tile guys made a bit of a mess but not too bad and GC had their stuff cleaned up and new paper down right after they finished. Old fashioned but the best way to get the proper look with trim and doors etc. I have been sweating bullets though b/c this stuff is hard to repair in the middle of a floor. I have rescued them from turned over drink bottles/cups, food...you name it. I finally told the GC to tell the subs no eating in the house if they could not get it in their mouth and not on the floor. Hind sight being 20/20, I might have done things a bit differently. I was going to chalk out the cabinets and let them lay the floors about 2 inches inside the line (to be safe). Floor guy said "Lets lay them all the way to the walls in case you ever decide to move any of these cabinets." At first I thought, great idea! Now I realize, I will never move those cabinets (in my lifetime) and I now have about $2,000 (at least)of flooring under the cabinets!...See MoreWhich Direction to Lay Kitchen Hardwood Flooring
Comments (4)Just use common sense here. Look at the condition of the subfloor boards. What are they made of and are they still mostly stiff and flat? If they haven't sagged between the joists in 80 years or so, they're not going to do that now. Although the book says install finish flooring perpendicular to the joists, I would not worry much about that, especially where the subfloor material condition is as I described. Simply make sure that the subfloor is well-attached and sqeak-free....See MoreHELP! What direction to lay hardwood flooring?
Comments (5)jerry_t, thanks for letting me know. I have a concrete sub-floor so there will be no plywood to nail or glue the floor down to. I am thinking of making the floor long ways when one walks in the door so when the cabinets are put back on the floor and the little bit of walk way between the cabinets and my desk will have long boards and not many horizontal busy looking boards. This has been such a tough decision for me since I actually fell in love with the Bruce Park Avenue Pradoo Laminate, the BR-111 Brazilian Cherry Triangulo Engineered and the BR-111 Amendoim Triangulo Engineered and could not make up my mind. I hope I am not making a mistake since I know Brazilian Cherry darkens dramatically but I love the coloring of the red tones....See MoreAnyone lay hardwood in kitchen and match to existing hardwood?
Comments (5)I had the exact same issue. Initially they thought they could do it. But my house is old and when they did the demo they said the way they did the spacing of the supports under the wood on the older section cannot be duplicated today and the floor would never look even and the old section would always be a little higher and "squeaky". Ended up doing the whole floor. However, the hallways are old hardwood as well and the transition (via a doorway) seems fine....See Moreitsourcasa
