Oil Based Deck Stain for Tropics

The last time I built a house, I used Benjamin Moore semi transparent exterior penetrating wood stain. I saw it 5 years ago and it still looked good.

But now, 18 years later, I'm building a new house and everything for decks is 'acrylic' (so you have to pay someone to strip and refinish bi annually) or oil finishes that call for an annual recoat or acrylic topcoat.

Any suggestions for a semi transparent deck finish that will last in year round beating sunlight? 5 years would be nice.....

(oh, FYI- tried Penofin, not a fan)

I'm a little confused by your timeline, but if I understand you correctly, you built the old house 18 years ago, then moved out. Then 5 years ago you went back to look at it and the deck still looked good.

Do I have that right? If so, I'd say whoever has owned the house in the meantime has been keeping up with the maintenance while you were gone.

As far as recommendations, I'd suggest Ipe Oil. In spite of the name, it's a good product for any type of hardwood decking.

This is a question i would explore locally...depending on where you are calling the tropics....the wood you choose should be researched first...then explore the best product used locally...i would also limit the size of your decks and to areas located for best sun exposure at the time of day they will be used...also plan where deck covers will be needed reduce sun into your home interior...most people plan decks for how they look rather than they will be used...adding vast expansions of deck that are rarely used ..exposed to so much direct sun that they need constant care...many tropical areas have extremely hard woods that will last forever with little care...so look into what the locals use..perhaps post more details here as to location and how you will be using your deck as well..

To update for anyone searching this topic, we chose SuperDeck Exotic Hardwood Stain. The application was very easy and it looks nice; the wood looks like it does when it's wet now which everyone in our family loved more than the look when it was dry. :)

I live in the foothill region of central CA: hot dry summer/fall and cold, freezing and often rainy & foggy winter. Just replaced 20-yr-old redwood deck with new redwood (the lower grade redwood, not top notch) and need to seal it. Read all the post since 2005 re: "I've had it with deck stains." Can someone tell me what to use on redwood in my climate? I thought a clear oil sealer was best (no color or stain), but now after reading so much info, I'm totally confused. Do oil sealers offer UV protection in the formula? Is oil sealer better than water-based in my climate? Is the wax content in oil products a good thing or a bad thing in this climate. Help! Please! Thank you.

Seems like linseed oil is a bad idea here, thank you for pointing that out too. The salesperson at the local woodworker supply recommended linseed oil based on what I told him about the problem, but we didn't talk about darkening at all so I'm glad this discussion brought that out. I am still considering oil (would look for the Watco product Casey mentions) though wipe on varnish is looking better, can anyone tell me whether one darkens more than the other? Have read very good reviews of General Finishes products here on garden web (kitchens)--from their website, looks like their oil-based topcoat (as contrasted with their oil based stain/sealer products) which is called "GF Arm-R-Seal Urethane Topcoat" which is liquid wipe on, would be a good bet, or "GF Oil Based Urethane Topcoat" which is gel wipe on. Any thoughts on these specific products, or any recommendations for other products? I've used Benjamin Moore oil based clear stain in the past and liked it. I'm just trying to avoid sanding on this project, I've done that before on smoke damaged tongue and groove plank ceilings (Deck House again) and the results were good, but it's too time consuming and disruptive at this stage. I think I can manage a wipe-on finishing project, but not sanding. Thanks again!

For people looking for a durable domestic hardwood our hickory has been a very popular option. Because you'll be finishing in place your installer should be able to stain any color you want but make sure to see how it looks on the specie and grade you choose. The hickory has a very noticeable color variation between the heart wood and sapwood and because of this will stain a little differently. As far as finish goes we usually recommend a tung oil finish because of the fact that it is spot repairable. This allows you to re-finish or touch up areas where the dogs make their loop, leap, or general jumping around. I know pointers can sometimes be a little high energy and this will allow you smooth out those areas without re-finishing the entire surface like you would need to do with a traditional poly finish. Another option that many large pet owning customers have really liked is our saw kerf texture. This does give more of a rustic feel to the surface but it also disguises many of the "accidental blemishes" that can happen with your flooring. What ever your decision we wish you luck!

After trying several of the water-based products over the years and having problems, I am now using PPG Proluxe, but I cannot yet vouch for its longevity. It used to be a Silkens product.
