The GBBC is a fun and important citizen science event that you can take part in at any level; from noticing the birds outside your window to going berserk and visiting every possible bird site in your neighborhood and county. I always enjoy watching the results pour in from all over the world.

Wrapping Up the Amazing 2020 GBBC

Wow, Just Wow!

The 2020 Great Backyard Bird Count exceeded all expectations and set the bar even higher when it comes to public participation in worldwide citizen-science events! This year's count smashed previous records for number of participants, checklists, and species reported. More than a quarter-of-a-million people were counting birds over the four days of the GBBC this year!

Species: 6,942

Checklists: 249,444

Estimated Participants: 268,674

Our top-10 list for species appearing on the greatest number of checklists shows the Northern Cardinal once again in the top spot. Changes compared to year: White-breasted Nuthatch got knocked out of the tenth spot, replaced by the Red-bellied Woodpecker--a species that has been expanding its range in recent years. House Sparrow and American Crow swapped places, with the sparrow moving up two notches. All other species are in the same position as during the last GBBC.

The top-10 list above reflects species common in the United States and Canada because of continued high participation in the region. Record-breaking participation from other countries generated valuable data documenting the diversity of species across the globe. See the top-10 list below of countries reporting the greatest number of species--always a hotly-contested race in bird-rich Central and South America. Peru and Mexico swapped places but otherwise the list remains unchanged compared to last year, although in nearly every case, these countries set new species records. U.S. participants reported slightly fewer species than last year. (Asterisks indicate a new species record for the GBBC.)

Phil, I hope you can participate in the GBBC this year, or try to catch a picture of the natives around your garden. This is like the Avian Winter Olympics. You might wind up submitting a great photo to the 2014 photos for the GBBC that is a winner. I'd love to see a cardinal sitting on the rim of your jade ginger jar..... They are all getting calories to keep warm during these final weeks of winter. If you see any really FAT birds in the next couple of weeks, they'll be from my backyard! I'll be sending them your way before long.

I counted in various places yesterday and photographed some nice birds in the local marsh, but one of the great things about the GBBC is that you can check on the whereabouts of a bird that's a harbinger of spring. Red-winged Blackbirds were seen in the hundreds in southeastern Massachusetts and there are reports in CT and RI. I myself saw a Brown-headed Cowbird this morning which is a bird that migrates early, usually with the grackles, close behind the red-wings. Spring is closer! Birds in the marsh: Great Blue Heron Green-winged Teal Red-breasted Merganser Buffleheads and a Canada Goose (one of many many Canada Geese) Claire

I just started Project FeederWatch this season. I count on Sunday-Mondays, and actually look forward to those days. Although I like to count on a fixed schedule, it can be more flexible if necessary. The maximum frequency for those who submit data online is 2 days/week. For those who submit data on a paper form, it's 2 days every 2 weeks. As for the minimum frequency, the instructions only say "Your data are valuable even if you were only able to count on a few occasions". You can count intermittently throughout the 2 day period, or sit there and watch constantly. You estimate the total cumulative time. This can be less than 1 hour total, or more than 8 hours. If you work full-time, you can count for a bit before and after work. Counting the birds has helped to pass a very cold, snowy and tedious winter. I really enjoy exploring the data that results from these counts too.
