Lying, dog-faced pony soldier

margaritadina

''

Former Vice President Joe Biden bizarrely called a young woman a “lying dog-faced pony soldier” at a campaign event in New Hampshire on Sunday.

The woman had just asked the presidential hopeful about his fourth-place standing in the Iowa caucuses.

“How do you explain the performance in Iowa and why should voters believe that you can win the national election?” she asked, according to a clip of the exchange.

Biden, 77, admitted it was a legitimate question but then asked her: “Iowa’s a caucus. Have you ever been to a caucus?”

When she indicated she had, Biden responded: “No, you haven’t. You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier,” drawing laughter from the crowd.

Just in case some disparage your choice of sources, marg, here's another. This is very strange...

HAMPTON, N.H. — Former Vice President Joe Biden offered a puzzling response to a voter who asked how he can be expected to win a national election after placing fourth in Iowa. At a campaign event in New Hampshire, the woman warned Biden that she was about to ask a potentially mean question before saying, "How do you explain the performance in Iowa, and why should voters believe that you can win the national election?"

Biden said the question was legitimate but then asked whether she had "ever been to a caucus" before. She signaled that she had, to which Biden said: "No, you haven't. You're a lying dog-faced pony soldier." The audience laughed in response.

The comment is a reference to a line Biden has used before, one he has claimed is from a John Wayne movie. As he finished answering the woman's question, Biden said it was "not a mean question" but "an honest question." It's unclear what movie Biden was referring to. The woman told The Washington Post that she was surprised by his reaction. "I'm not one to just push on wounds. I'm not trying to humiliate anyone,” she said.

Scrutiny of Biden's campaign has intensified in recent days following his underwhelming performance in Iowa.

This is apparently the closest match so far (among those searching for the reference in old John Wayne movies.)

The line in this one is “The pony soldier speaks with a tongue of the snake that rattles.” And there is a reference to "dog soldiers." So pretty close.

I think he was trying to be funny. But I agree it was a little odd.

She didn’t get the reference. I wouldn’t have either, way before my time. Big deal.

It doesn't matter how old you are, Food. There's a problem with "the reference". It never happened. No John Wayne film had that line, or one like it. In fact, no one has found any movie with that line.

Who said it was a calamity? We can discuss Trump's weight, hair, marriages, morals, business dealings, diet, speech patterns, and everything under the sun, but it's off limits to have a post about a story that's all over the internet?

It doesn't make him look sharp or aware that he's using a reference nobody gets. He's running for president. People are gonna talk about it.

I agree, though, from the tone in the room, it sounds like they just laughed it off. Doesn't make it any less strange.

Um, he called her that, jokingly, after she had answered affirmatively that she had been at a caucus. It wasn’t in response or defense of some “truth.”

Maybe it's just me, but I find parallels between "truth" and "honesty":

Biden admits, “That’s a good question,” and went on to list why he did not seem to perform well. The former Delaware senator says, “Number 1: I was a Democrat in caucus. You ever go to caucus?”

While you can’t see in the video posted on social media, she answers him and he replies, “No you haven’t. You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier.

You said you were but you have to be honest and I am now going to be honest with you.”

Biden did not call the questioner "dog-faced." He called her a "pony soldier" whom he described as "dog-faced." I assume that description comes from the "dog soldiers" of the Plains Indians--the elite fighters of the tribe.

I think Biden has mixed together several different traditions, except that John Wayne didn't say it--though it sounds like something "Big Jake" might very well say.

I'm sure it was intended as a mock-serious joke.

Chi, I'll be the annoying person that explains. The first few lines of the above article uses car wrecks as an example of how nobody can look away from awful things. It's not a new reference, at all, and I'm surprised you've never seen it.

Of course it's not a reference to the crash that killed his wife and daughter, and injured his two sons. I can't believe you really thought that, as heated as comments get here. Really?

I have the same feeling every time there's a new video of a Biden gaffe. I look but I don't really want to. I've been saying from the start that his gaffes made me feel bad. I didn't like watching decline in family members, and I don't like seeing it in public figures. That's my own frame of reference, and it's what I think of when I see Biden making a confusing or weird statement, like calling a woman a dog-faced pony soldier.

I have never heard of a specific person called a "car wreck" before. Like I said earlier, I have heard of people called a "train wreck" but not a "car wreck", and it immediately struck me because of Biden's personal history.

But that's why I asked and didn't accuse because that's a pretty awful thing to say if that was the intent.

I just checked out predictit too, and we sure as heck could end up with that Trump/Sanders matchup we didn't end up having in 2016. I have always felt Sanders could have won that one in 2016, but I'd bet on Trump in 2020. Trump was such a political unknown then and now he has many accomplishments as well as incumbency.

The state bets in predictit are amazing to peruse. I think Bernie is now leading in every single state (except completed Iowa). There may be one or two exceptions, but I can't think that I noticed any at all.

I did mention Trump supporters because I think Trump uses personal insults because of who he is but also because he's realized most of his supportrrs find those insults to be funny, and energizing. If those who don't pushed back, he might tone it down.

I also mentioned his supporters because what they applaud in Trump, they deride as awful in anyone else and it just seems like a double standard, given how consistently Trump resorts to personal insults without condemnation.

I don't find mimicking a handicap person's disability funny. It doesn't get lower than that. I was also surprised that the new trend of calling people names was broadcasted in the first place, it should have stayed behind the closed doors, or better yet, in one's mind. But it didn't. ''deplorables and irredeemables'' hit the air and became an indulgence for a name calling. This is how I see it, no need to agree.

I did that, too! Went to the gym, and thought about this thread some more.

I really do have a double standard when it comes to insulting the physical appearance of women, and of men. One seems more over the line than the other. But that's wrong; men care about their appearance, too. If I say women care more (so insults to their appearance hurts them more) that makes women seem shallow. I don't like that either.

If Biden had called a man a lying dog-faced pony soldier, would it have gotten as much attention? I mean, it would still be very weird, but maybe with more laughter and less of an angry reaction? (Nobody has to answer, I'm mostly muttering to myself.)

Oh, no, you are not derailing a thread, not at all.

I didn't realize that Trump acted this way before. You are right, that looks like a behavioral coincidence.

But then again....when talking about a handicap person, stand still for God's sake and speak normally. That's how I see it.

Trump is definitely a straight error and tells like it is, which I need badly after Obama years, but handicap people have a special spot in my world. They are already punished for nothing. But that, again, it's my personal fear of becoming a handicap, it's totally undeserved, should not happen to anyone, and is a terrible reality to live with. So, it's purely personal opinion.

You may recall that Trump was actually mocking/talking about the disabled reporter and supposedly was quoting him - the "I don't remember" bits you hear Trump saying in a totally normal voice tone ( /s)- -- but points for Our Matureness for simply reusing his flailing insult movement because he didn't mean to actually mimic a person whose disability affacts his arm position and movements?

Got it.

Thanks for posting that, margaritadina. From the article:

“It was kind of humiliating to be called a liar on national TV by the former vice president,” Moore told the newspaper.

“Instead of answering that question straightforward, his immediate response was to attempt to invalidate me by exposing my inexperience.”

So, the guess I made (by trying to judge the reaction of the people in the video) was wrong. At least, for the young woman who asked Biden the question.

Lol margaritadina, it's clear you have a great sense of humor about language errors. I have family members who are dyslectic; it's a constant challenge, to say the least. Good for you.

Tucker Carlson had me in stitches tonight talking about the demise of Joe Biden. He said soon he will be wearing white knee highs and enjoying a 4:30 Prime Rib special, lol

I heard that Margo:) I'm not sure if impeachment has anything to do with Joe's demise but I certainly predicted impeachment would hurt Biden and help Bernie and Trump. It sure did.

Not that it's of any value to this discussion but a friend just told me that the "You're a lying dog-faced pony soldier" is a quote from a Tyrone Power movie called Pony Soldier.

''Annie Deighnaugh

Nope, no, no way.

trumplicants don't get to be all up in arms because biden made a joke
-- however dumb -- with a movie quote that might be taken as an insult
if someone were not aware, when they support a guy who has insulted so
many people in so many different ways from mocking them to name calling
to insults and even ginning up false narratives to discredit them.
trump is the insulter in chief. He's yours...own it!''

Annie, you should ease on using ''trumplicants''. Enough already.

Yes, Trump is ours. No one is objecting. Just refrain from posting fakes about him, please. If Joe wins he will be our president, too. Or any other guy/woman. And we can discuss any or all of them of them all we want.

And in light of his latest corrupt interference in the Roger Stone case, this is frightening.

I am not a Biden fan and I think he should step aside. But bottom line, if it comes down to him or Trump, Biden all the way.

Kadefol, I think Biden will have no choice but to step aside very soon. He'll have no money or support to sustain him much further.

Stone should be pardoned. I think Trump should wait until after the election, but Stone should be pardoned.

Why wait until after, if it should be done?

For the very same reason most presidents wait until after elections to grant pardons. People completely freak out just before elections (and blow situations far out of context) and hardly notice pardons after elections.

It should be done and everyone (I'd even guess Stone included) would see the wisdom is letting it be a low key event instead of a crazy wild news event.

"The first few lines of the above article uses car wrecks as an example of how nobody can look away from awful things."

Might be true if this said "how few can look away from awful things" - because some can and do.

(Could be why 'viewership' for the recent SOTU was down.)
