Putting up a cedar shiplap indoors

I feel like this is a great looking wood that is light as well so it would make a good accent/shiplap wall. Does anyone know how easy they are to clean?

That all depends on what kind of finish they have and the surface.

Two points:
- Cedar splits very, very easily so you have to be extra, extra careful with installing.
- Make sure that you are not allergic to cedar. If DIY, wear long sleeves to protect yourself from the oil in the wood.

I agree, with Benny. I NEVER use a moisture meter, I think they cause a lot of trouble. I rather prefer to determine the water content of containers by two methods, 1). weight of the container and 2). The use of my finger. After you have had a tree for some time you get to know whats going on both above the soil line and below. Till, the reason people are recomending a smaller container is because you stated that you "soil" has remained wet for over 3 weeks. Except for the top inch or two of the "soil" in a container, which can lose moisture from evaporation to the air, the primary, and almost only way moisture is ever removed from the rest of the container is through root absorption by the tree. If your container is still wet after 3 weeks (if additional irrigation has not been given) then that demostrates that the size of the root ball to the size of the container is out of balance. Especially at this time of the year. I think your trying to hard to figure out the meaning of the word "draining" as it is related to a container medium. It means that the medium when irrigated can hold a substancial amount of water while not losing its ability to also hold a substantial amount of air. The over flow drains off quickly instead of remaining to waterlog the potting mix, as happens in highly dense mediums. The volume of air space in a container should never be below approximately 25% of the containers volume. I like 30 - 35 percent. Beaded board versus shiplap

There is actually something called a baseboard buddy? or something like that sold at BBB. Im not giving deign advice but to clear some things up. Most bead board or ship lap is made from cheap pine which is probably the lowest on the hardness scale in regards to wood In other words it dents and scratches very easily. Sheetrock is very easily repaired so if damages are your worry I would pic sheetrock any day of the week. Repairing wood isn't as easily repaired. Us a satin or above sheen such as SW Cashmere and it can be repaired or spotted in very easily. That said the higher the gloss as used on trim becomes harder to blend in. You can use every product on the planet if you use wood you will get bleed through and it might show up a year later. I am a wood worker and love working with wood and also like seeing the defects as that is the look i prefer. That said if you do not like that look use MDF. It is more stable and you won't get all the shrinking in between the boards and no bleeding through. Do not let anyone caulk in between the boards. This will make shrinkage show 10xs as much when the caulk fails. Anything used in moderation is acceptable. Pic an accent wall or two and use either. They have both been around for a 100 years. The problem comes when you have headboard in every room or shiplap everywhere. Pick and accent wall and in three years you will be glad you did!!!

Stain or Paint my pine shiplap

Now I am all set with the INSIDE Pine Shiplap- I need asking any ideas what to do with our Outdoor Pine shiplap ( under the roof- we will install tile floor-we are thinking we might close the patio as 4 season patio in the future). It has been rough and long renovation-I am tired getting hit left/right-so hoping will get ideas from this discussion. The option: Stain in -could not afford using weatherstain -wicked too expensive - thinking to use Benjamin Moore Arborcoat -just not sure what color. OR paint is with Exterior Aura. Question: What is the proper preparation either for stain or paint? Do I need to sand 1st? Sand, Prime if we decide to paint? Protection: what to use for stain or paint because of the New England weather.

Ventilation. I'd look into getting a ceiling ventilation fan like you'd use in a bathroom -- the trick will be whether you have space in the ceiling below the deck to run the ducting. Otherwise, open a window??

Real shiplap does not belong inside and cedar has a smell that I would not like and BTW the whole “shiplap” ship has sailed . Post the space and explain where you think you need a feature wall maybe you will get some better ideas.

It's not a feature wall , it's just going to be above a fireplace, similar to this pic but with cedar.

What wood would be recommend? I want to add some richness to an empty part of house

The gloss finish is too much, I would want a flat or satin at most.

And cedar is very splintery (ouch) and will change color over time when exposed to natural light. If you are going for the look of your inspiration pic then do that - not shiplap and not cedar.

What you are showing is in no way shiplap that is a custom finish done with a good quality wood . I have no idea what your space looks like so i can’t really advise a wood type. Maybe post some pics of your space and also info as to what your FP is like wood burning or gas or electric that will decide what you can do for the surround.

That photo appears to show stone, not wood. Stone would make a lot more sense. Cedar does not make sense, for all of the reasons already noted.

What kind of fireplace? If it's like the inspiration pic, you may need noncombustible material above it. A wood look tile would work. Lots of options at tilebar.com. Here's a really large one 10 x 40 https://www.tilebar.com/lakewood-roble-10x40-matte-porcelain-tile.html
