Observations on the Operation of the Sears HE5t-Steam
Comments (47)Getting a good normal wash in "warm" water is a bread and butter kind of cycle. Being a traditionalist, I define a "warm" wash as being 104F give or take. Being curious what a HE5t normal-warm would be (knowing it doesn't use the heater) I measured a couple of these cycles 8 to 10 minute after starting the machine. At this point in the cycle all the water that's going to enter the machine for the wash portion of the cycle has been added. Temperatures were measured in the 82F to 84F range. It is a major disappointment that ATC can't or wasn't programmed to get the fill temp at a real "warm" level. A previous test showed that choosing a "hot" normal wash actually gives you fill temp of 105F in one of my tests, so atleast in the winter you have another way of getting there. Here is some more data. Tried a cycle today that has some promise. It's a normal warm wash with steam treat. It fills with 92F water (somewhat higher than the normal cycle without steam treat) and heats the water to 103F and the heater is only on for about 15 minutes. Now that's starting to feel like a normal-warm wash. The cycle took a bit over an hour and a half (including the extra rinse) so that isn't too bad either. It also seems like the temperature of the fill water is about the same whether you choose steam treat-warm or hot (low to mid 90s F). It seems like the ability to choose steam treat with a target temp of warm in addition to hot or sanitary is a new capability. Now getting a real "hot" wash is another matter. A normal-steam treat-hot certainly get you there with maximum temps approaching 130F but it ends up being almost 2 hours in length with over an hour in the wash cycle alone. The heavy duty hot also kicked on the heater with a cycle length of a bit over 1.5 hours, but it only reached 110F which is a very coolish hot. Have to give Whitest-Whites hot a try. Based on previous data showing how long the heater was on in W-W, that may give the desired result....See MoreLittle Giant question
Comments (101)Well, I guess you could say I bought the Little Giant and stand in commercial garb, rather than gussied-up residential garb. Maybe like what you'd find in the utility room of a vet or a spa. It's at the opposite end of the basement from the stairs, roughly a 60-foot walk through unfinished basement, and looks right at home there. By the way, our main laundry area has a Miele washer and a Whirlpool dryer, and the mismatch doesn't bother either of us. I video'ed a wash of a very full load, consisting of 20 Carhartt Workwear short-sleeve pocket t-shirts (i.e. heavy fabric and generously cut) and 3 thinner Hanes, all medium size. The machine handled it great, and I was going to upload and annotate the video. But since it was only my second load, I was there much of the time, standing around with my hands in my pockets, fussing around, whatever. I didn't realize that the camera would pick up everything I was doing through the chrome porthole ring, making me look silly. So I'll have to do another start-to-finish video of an interesting load, but stay away most of the time, and behave like I'm on-camera when I'm there....See MoreWasher Woes

Comments (139)First, the compact Electrolux washer does, in fact, have an onboard heater. But no temperatures are specified for hot, warm, cold or what they call "eco cold." A chart shows which water temperatures operate on which cycles. Many are preset. There is a setting for the washer to what appears to be a profile wash which I define as a cold prewash followed by a specific temperature set main wash plus 3 rinses. I have a Miele Euro size machine -- essentially a compact. I do a set of king sheets weekly. It also does a king quilted (but not thick) blanket cover/bedspread. It will do a king blanket. However, very heavy bath sheets (800-850 g) were problemmatic. I did only 2 at a time because they become super heavy when saturated with water. I've had trouble with the spin washing these. One reason I went to lighter weight (500 g) bath sheets and towels. No issues on washing those at all. They don't strain the machine. The Miele does have definitions for the various water temperatures and my tests have shown them to be very accurate. However, it has a hot and cold fill vs the 240 v previous Miele which was cold-water fill only. My previous Asko compact was 240v and cold-water fill only. When the controller board went I got only cold washes vs the Miele when the heater broke I got very warm washes just not hot or sanitize. Both unfortunate but essentially explains how the difference in the fill affects the machine. For most of my loads the machine size is perfect. As someone said upthread, for 2-4 people and someone who sorts it's just fine....See Moreanoop
