Any changes to this long list of fragrant roses?
Comments (20)You're welcome! It's not odd that cooler zones will report more fragrance from many than warmer areas. Those in the cooler places are probably smelling them when the oils and alcohols are most volatile and smell the most. We in the warmer areas often miss out because they evaporate faster as the heat increases. Also, as aridity increases, the scents burn out faster. The various components of each rose's fragrance evaporate at different rates, so one may smell very Damask at first, quickly morphing into orris or citrus, finishing a completely different scent before losing any detectable trace for the day. Comments (37)Hi - I got mine from Hortico several years ago. I just saw it listed from Peter Schneider under the Custom Propagation section. http://www.combinedroselist.com/freedom-gardens.html I know that Palatine Roses in Canada offered Fair Bianca a few weeks ago when it had a special sale of discontinued David Austin roses. You might contact them to find out when their next sale is. I believe their FB is grafted on multiflora rootstock which does well for me in 9b.
Bien amicalement, Pete....See MoreLe Petite Prince ... AKA Arctic Ice ... AKA Blue Emotion
Comments (14)Hi Cori Ann. I am so sorry for taking so long in replying. We were out of town for some time and things were quite hectic when we returned. Here is some bush shots of Arctic Ice as promised. Please keep in mind that this year was exceptionally dry (with drought records for South Africa which is already considered an arid country ) and hot. We had water restrictions for the last two years in a row and it was only partially lifted less than a month ago after we eventually got some good showers in our area. Other parts of the country is still exceptionally dry with Cape Townians running out of drinking water. As such, my Arctic Ice did not get much water during spring and the heat of summer and it did not gain as much size as during other years. I was however quite impressed - it was one of the few bushes (from about 300 roses) that took to the conditions quite well and flowered throughout summer. In the 4+ years I've had it I've never seen black spot or mildew and the flowers did not crisp like most of the other lavender roses. The flower is usually quite full although I also get the occasional frilly single from time to time. Stiff canes, lovely fragrance, and the bees love it (unfortunately the beetles too!). It also readily accepts pollen from other roses and sets an abundance of huge hips. I am including some pics from my own garden as well as from Ludwig's main farm which I visited over the weekend. There is another beautiful plant (much larger than the one on the picture) growing at Ludwig's but as I was there for only a short time on Sunday afternoon with winter setting in and two toddlers in tow I did not have time to go to that area of the farm for a pic - will try next spring. At Ludwig's - if you consider the shade net you will see that the plant is quite tall. Purple rose in the back corner - the irrigation pipe is about shoulder-height for me....See MorePerma n’ Posies/9A FL
