My 9/11 plant is dying and I can't let it

I've had this little houseplant since Sept 2001. It was one of the few things my cousin rescued from her lower Manhattan apartment after the World Trade Center attacks. It's been healthy and repotted until recently. It means a lot to me. But this past fall, I took on an out-of-town work project and left the plant with my husband. He watered it regularly, but he likes the bedroom dark and the gauzy curtains were often drawn. On a visit home, I realized the plants' leaves and runners were dying (leaves have spots and go black one by one) and rescued it, taking it with me. I thought sunlight would cure it. But it has kept dying. Trailers have leaves turn black, then shrivel away altogether. Now it has some bright green shoots off some trailers, but half the pot is bald, and many other trailers are suffering and shriveling. I can't emotionally handle losing this plant. Does anyone know what's happening? Can it be cured? Could it be a fungus? I'm hoping it's not just age. Help!
